zupzupper··on NetMaker: Connect Everything with a WireGuard VPN
These over the top services handle node discovery and meshing for you, instead of you having to feed configurations manually down to each device you want to hook up to wireguard.

zupzupper··on Why are there no startups in the real estate construction sector?
Laser leveling is very much a thing, I can't speak to grading for construction, but I have several family friends who use it extensively for agricultural fields in California.
zupzupper··on Winamp Clone Whips the Llama's Ass on an Espressif ESP32
I grabbed a USB BluRay player, which happens to work great as a CD player/ripper as well.

Thrift shops, library shops, and even second hand "media" shops are everywhere and completely drowning in CDs. (DVDs too but that's another story)

For a couple bucks, you can go grab an armload of CDs, rip them, play them whatever, and donate them back or resell them, get yourself some random seeds for music discovery.

Oh dang, I'd have thought they'd opened back up by now. Well shoot, good to know.

Look up the skyline to sea trail, it's near you.and wonderful.
zupzupper··on The bottom is dropping out of Netflix
Same here, much better selection on DVD / BluRay than their streaming.

I haven't done a side by side with it, but the red dragon sauce is damn good.

Maybe a bit different than Huy Fong, but it checks the box for me.

Side note, the main mechanism TJs and other store brands use to pull off this trick is to have the original manufacturers produce the product for them as a white label product.

zupzupper··on Man shoots down drone, gets hit with felony charges in Minnesota
Actually quadcopters/drones/fixed wing, RC aircraft et. al. are "aircraft" per the FAA.

14 CFR 91 defines both, here's the FAA interpretation of 14 CFR 91, which they also produced to explain why they were allowed to further regulate RC aircraft operations outside of the boundaries set by congress in the FAA FAA Modernization and Reform Act of 2012.

https://www.faa.gov/uas/educational_users/media/model_aircra...

Basically the FAA took the stance that all these things are "aircraft" and the same sets of rules apply to their operation.

Shooting down or at a drone, or RC aircraft has always violated the same set of laws, perpetrators just haven't yet been prosecuted for it yet.

Kinda worrying that they found "Heavy Hitters" to have pesticides, that brand is sold all around me here in CA at the legal shops.

zupzupper··on The dockless scooter industry is going after a repossessor and a bike shop owner
Most haven't actually. The modus operandi of the scooter companies seems to be:

1. Drop a load of scooters around town in the middle of the night

2. Wait for the city to take notice

3. Apply for permit after the fact

They're very much in the "Easier to ask forgiveness than permission" game right now.

zupzupper··on MPAA Welcomes Netflix as New Member
I would point out that their DVD and Blu-ray selection is still excellent.
zupzupper··on Raspberry Pi 4
I know we're talking video here but I wanted to share something. My father just got a new set of 'ears', he's been going deaf. They are titanium studs that are implanted into the bone just behind the ear, about the size of pencil erasers. They work through bone conduction. The hearing part are replaceable electronics that snap on and off the studs.

The current gen are about the size of a quarter and are bluetooth capable, so he can sync to his devices, watch movies, etc with these little guys tucked behind some hair.

It got me thinking, I wonder if audio guys have started to look at some of this sort of thing to really "hear" music perfectly. Very interesting tech.

zupzupper··on Environmentalist didn't speak for 17 years to learn how to listen to opponents

Yep. Definitely Front Page on CBC. Totally beating out all those other stories today.

Troll.

zupzupper··on Environmentalist didn't speak for 17 years to learn how to listen to opponents
True, though I imagine most universities would also honor a candidates religious needs in this sort of situation, which would fall more under a personal choice rather than a physical impairment.
zupzupper··on Environmentalist didn't speak for 17 years to learn how to listen to opponents
I think a vow of this sort is a very personal one, so I'd guess the rules are sort of up to him, it sounds like he stopped speaking, but communicated in other ways. The article mentions he earned his PhD during his 'vow' so I would guess he'd have done at least a bit of writing in addition to mail.
zupzupper··on Should you be concerned about LastPass uploading your passwords to its server?
>By far the biggest problem with LastPass is that it sometimes just doesn't apply (or misapplies) the password or username to the appropriate form entries, and I have to go find it and copy it. Occasionally it also misses the saving of a new password (that it generated) and I have to put it in the vault by hand. I suspect this is a really hard problem given the massive variety of forms out there, but would be curious to hear if other password managers never have these issues.

Agreed, ambiguously named form input fields cause all kinds of havok, I helped our UX team track down one in our application because it was breaking my lastpass =)

For the second issue, I've just adjusted my workflow to accommodate LastPass's peculiarities. I just click "Generate Secure Password", copy it to the clipboard and fill the form myself. Then I have a copy of the password on the clipboard should LP miss adding the site properly.

While it's a slight pain to work around that particular issue, it's far better than what I used to do with regards to password reuse.

zupzupper··on Is a Serial-Killer Gang Murdering Young Men Across the U.S.?
> “Years ago, we were on their dark-web webpage but it was asking us to turn on a video camera so they could see who was about to type in the password and there’s no way we were doing that. And we didn’t even have the password. We’d just been given their URL, so went to it because we were told that’s how they communicate.”

Yep. clearly a dark-web connected nationwide conspiracy of serial-killers here.

Now on the other hand, I would absolutely believe you if you told me there was a nationwide consortium of taggers using the same or similar smiley faces and sharing their tags with each other on social media....

zupzupper··on Merlin: A cross-platform command and control server and agent written in Go
Heh, written in Delphi I think.

My earliest PC consulting was cleaning up sub7 infections caused by antivirus packages deleting the main executable.

Sub7 associated the .exe format in windows with it's main executable, so if you removed the "infection" you had a really interesting time loading up windows afterwards, explorer.exe and all the others were looking for sub7.exe to load themselves =)

The tarantulas are out in the hills around the bay for the most part, especially the East Bay hills and down around the Santa Cruz mountains.

My experience with BW bites was my dad getting bit a couple times growing up out in the Central Valley. He had bad flu like symptoms for a few days from the bites. FWIW

Lost and Found (band) I think has some nice song books if you've never come across them. Two piece band, guitar and piano, simple music, large variety of subject matter, very different sound.

> Incidentally, Mark, you are now 34 years old, which is "old" by Valley standards. Shouldn't you be quitting?

Oh you know, this only applies to the rank and file. Management positions don't mind if you're a bit older, but if you didn't spend the last decade building out teams and people managing and just wanted to spend your career coding...tough cookies.
