zschallz··on I’m Tired Of Companies Ripping off our site, So I’m Calling Them Out
How is it slander? It's pretty obvious that these companies did steal the design (JavaScript and all).
zschallz··on Why We Still Believe in Working Remotely
I may be wrong, but if they have a presence in the UK they most likely do not need a presence in Germany. Through EU agreements, Germans are allowed to work legally in the UK.
zschallz··on Google has indexed thousands of publicly accessible HP printers
If I leave my keys in the car, leave the car turned on with the door opened, are you authorized to drive my car?
zschallz··on Your ATM does not use transactions
It would have made more sense if they were using stolen ATM cards.
zschallz··on The Story of the Ping Program
Interesting read. Was sad to click through to his homepage and find out that he had already passed away in 2000 due to an automobile accident.
zschallz··on China Blocks Web Access to The New York Times After Article
Not reflected in the title, and doesn't seem to be in the beginning of the article.
zschallz··on The Internet is experiencing severe outages across North American and Asia
Understood. Thanks!
zschallz··on The Internet is experiencing severe outages across North American and Asia
Seems bogus. The Ashburn router is pingable (at least from near Ashburn) even though it's listed as down:

Pinging 67.215.65.132 with 32 bytes of data: Reply from 67.215.65.132: bytes=32 time=14ms TTL=56 Reply from 67.215.65.132: bytes=32 time=15ms TTL=56 Reply from 67.215.65.132: bytes=32 time=14ms TTL=56

zschallz··on China Blocks Web Access to The New York Times After Article
Looks like its no longer blocked in China... http://www.greatfirewallofchina.org/index.php?siteurl=www.ny...
zschallz··on Pirate Bay Moves to The Cloud, Becomes Raid-Proof
Note for clarity: The data transfer would not remain anonymous, only the trackers facilitating it.
zschallz··on Thank you Apple
And they wonder why people pirate.
zschallz··on Tomorrow Theme
Disappointed that it took me about 5 minutes to figure out why this was so important to HN. Neither the title or the link gives much information about what this is or why it is so great.

Maybe I'm just dumb.

zschallz··on Google Sues Apple, Seeks To Block iPhone, iPad & Mac Imports To U.S.
Why is it okay for Google to do it but not say, Oracle? It's ridiculous no matter who does it.
zschallz··on NSA Careers for DEF CON Attendees
Why? Because you don't agree with what they do?
zschallz··on Google Talk is down
Up and down (reconnects every 2 minutes) in Northern Virginia, USA
zschallz··on TapChat is mobile IRC done right
Something I've wanted to build someday but never did is exactly this but for xmpp, etc. I'd love to have a central place with my chat logs, etc.

Someone go build it, please!

zschallz··on Interactive visualization of commute times for all US cities
Really nice. Commute is very inaccurate for the Indianapolis area, however. One marked as 1 hour took me 25-30 minutes.
zschallz··on Will 'showrooming' kill businesses?
Retailers have the wrong attitude about this. I have come in to stores many times intending to buy something online and ended up buying it at the store instead.

Retailers need to find a way to present the product better (live interactive demos, friendly sales staff), have a better returns policy or servicing (many offer 30 day phone support now), and they need to convince the consumer they need this item now, rather than later. (Now vs having it shipped)

All of the complaining about show rooming is distracting retailers from making the changes necessary to make this actually beneficial for them.

zschallz··on Newegg Still Telling Customers That Installing New OS Violates Return Policy
To be fair, the return policy only lasts for about 14-30 days; then the manufacturer will have to service it.
zschallz··on Ask HN: who started something in 2012 that didn't or won't become profitable?
You could do an Ookla like thing and create a mini version people can host. My server seems to be in the same place as yours, otherwise I wouldn't have minded hosting one.
zschallz··on Gow - The lightweight alternative to Cygwin
I miss andLinux and coLinux. Since using a 64 bit OS they no longer work, but they natively emulated the whole Linux kernel and offered a pretty integrated solution. Not lightweight by any means, but just what I wanted.
zschallz··on Building a dependable hosting stack using Hetzner’s servers
I have the 14.99€ server as a development box that I access from the states. Truth be told, the disk IO and processing speed is slower than a Linode 512, but for 2GB of ram, 1TB of HDD and the transfer you can't really beat it.
zschallz··on Building a dependable hosting stack using Hetzner’s servers
I called Ireland once to immediately validate my account and they seemed friendly enough. OVH supports Kimsufi boxes. The dedicated server has been up without issues since I bought it. The server is hosted somewhere in Northern France near London as far as I can tell.

The only complaint I have about it are that the relay they have between France and the US is nearly always congested during US prime time. Because of this, download speeds from my server are really slow around 8PM est. Otherwise it's great.

tl;dr Development box and not in EU? Do it! Production box and not in EU? Maybe go with Hetzner or someone domestic.

zschallz··on Building a dependable hosting stack using Hetzner’s servers
I had a VPS at Hetzner I replaced my Linode with. Really liked it. For the same price, though, you can get a really underpowered dedicated server at kimsufi.ie through OVH with more ram and HD space.
zschallz··on The 144 Million Dollar Button
While this is true, an unintended consequence is that no other waiters care at all about you. If yours is neglecting you, you're going to have trouble getting another who's not receiving a tip from you to care.
zschallz··on Motorola wins Xbox and Windows 7 ban in Germany
Reminds me of grain/food aid given to the USSR during hard times. Even the Cold War US was afraid of what could happen with weapons of mass destruction during desperate times.
zschallz··on Why The US Can Beat China: The Facts About SpaceX Costs
Agreed, but that's not quite how it works in Enterprise software, I think. Enterprise software is developed to cover a wide spectrum of businesses whose business rules, etc differ greatly. Because of this it's hard to make a product that "just works" for every organization. That's why CIOs buy support and consulting contracts. :)
zschallz··on Diablo III open beta this weekend
Does a "valid battle.net account" mean you have to be paying for a battle.net service? I've got one, but not paying for WoW.
zschallz··on Why The US Can Beat China: The Facts About SpaceX Costs
But then we couldn't charge you for training and consulting.
zschallz··on Side Project: 1 Month, $10,000
Not stylish ones. You can generate a PDF resume off of your linked in profile, but really it's not very good.
