zoenolan··on Ask HN: How do you prepare onboarding material for new joiners?
I've used a newbie notes file for years. Mostly written but screenshots and video if they make sense. Preferably in something version controlled.

One of the first tasks of any new joiner is to update the notes with any errors or omissions. That should mean the notes are only as outdated as the last person to join. Which if you have a steady cadence of people joining shouldn't be too bad.

Having a buddy to answer any questions is good. Budget that taking 30% of that person's time at least initially.

zoenolan··on Ask HN: Should orgs limit the number of languages/frameworks?
I wrote about how multiple languages cost us a lot of time at a previous place

https://zoenolan.org/2022/09/language-choices/

This means now, I have a high bar for choosing something non-standard . It is not just writing the code but all the support, bug fixing, deployment and maintenance. Not to mention being able to hire with those skills

zoenolan··on Ask HN: What are good books/blogs to read for a first time CTO?
As others have said, joining a community has been helpful to me. I would recommend CTO Craft. You get to hear what issues others are dealing with and how they solve them.

zoenolan··on Ask HN: To what extent have digital payments replaced cash in your country?
Another UK person here.

In London. You can do just fine with only a card. Quite a few coffee shops and lunch places only accept cards.

In Nottingham I've not seen a place that only accepts card. The Buses still accept cash

zoenolan··on Ask HN: LinkedIn mysteriously banned me permanently; where to go next?
https://www.polywork.com/ maybe another place to market yourself

I've had a couple of temporary bans over the last few months. No warning or email. No idea what I did. Asking support on Twitter was the most helpful at getting things sorted https://twitter.com/LinkedInHelp

You have seen the r/LinkedIn mega thread? https://www.reddit.com/r/linkedin/comments/15cx1zg/mega_thre...

zoenolan··on Ask HN: Where to buy second hand server/computer parts?
eBay and Amazon Marketplace is where I normally go
zoenolan··on Intel shows 8 core 528 thread processor with silicon photonics
These particular chips. They seem more targeted at HPC work (and price point).

This sort of architecture. I wouldn't be surprised if current GPU were doing something similar.

If you think about executing a shader program. You typically are running that same code over a bunch of data. You can map that to multiple threads.

zoenolan··on Ask HN: How do you manage email on a custom domain?
+1 on this. I self hosted for years but it became a time sink, so I moved everything to Fastmail.
