znpy··on What 192GB Changes for Local AI on the Framework Desktop
Exactly, that also.
znpy··on What 192GB Changes for Local AI on the Framework Desktop
I have strong feeling that AMD had really messed up this release.

This was supposed to be released in July i think? In the meantime Apple has released 256gb and 512gb parts.

Somebody willing to take the leap and spend serious money in an llm-capable pc might be better off on apple hardware rather than AMD hardware.

znpy··on 1 in 8 cancer cases worldwide are caused by infections, study finds
for anybody else wondering: the environmental factors mentioned in the article (https://www.oatext.com/img/ORR-1-115-g001.gif) are:

diet, tobacco, infections, obesity, alcohol, others

znpy··on You Are No Longer Invited to Dinner
Yeah i have similar fond memories.

My grandma had four kids who all married and gave her ten nephews in total. On new year's eve we had this large dinners where pretty much 20 people gathered (sometimes more, when nephews got old enough to bring their partner OR some other uncle/aunt from other sides of the family joined).

znpy··on Everybody’s home. No one’s coming over
> It was not something my parents enjoyed, but rather an obligation they felt they had to uphold.

understandable, but if you think about it, it's kinda the price of keeping your "social network" alive. people nowadays understand that romantic relationships need maintenance and effort, but don't (yet?) understand that friendship require at least some maintenance as well. i guess that was even true-r before social media when you weren't constantly updated about what happened in friend X, Y and Z's lives.

most people nowadays don't really want to pay that price to keep relationships alive... and it's showing.

> My parents were always busy and exhausted.

what i'm about to write is absolutely anecdotical, but: i don't see people my age (30-40 years old) like super-relaxed either.

znpy··on California farmers are struggling to sell grapes as demand for wine drops
> health factors

A lot of people are on ozempic and similar drugs nowadays, isn’t some of the side effects a reduction in cravings (alcohol, nicotine etc) ?

znpy··on California farmers are struggling to sell grapes as demand for wine drops
Nah, they still taste like grape and sugary. It wouldn’t ferment without sugar after all.
znpy··on Israel Keeps Expanding into Gaza Despite Cease-Fire, Satellite Images Show
> Israel has made clear that its goal is complete ethnic cleansing of the Palestinian people

Curious, Iran has made the same statement about Israel

znpy··on Plunging test scores are a slow-moving catastrophe
Meh, the writing has been on the wall for a decade at least.

All that stupid ideas on giving passing grades to everybody in the name of equality (lol) removing admission tests to fight racism (double-lol), attention-stealing practices by social media (not lol) are now compounding with AI as a cheap service to offload thinking to.

The writing has been on the wall for years, a lot of people called that out and have been silenced.

Unironically, I would not be surprised if the kids with the best scores turned out to be the homeschooled ones.

My wild (and uneducate, don't get me wrong) guess is that in some years we'll see two groups of people succeeding: homeschooled kids (their parents kept them away from the BS) and the rich people's kids (their parent could afford a no-BS schooling).

> Falling scores will not be fixed in a jiffy

If it will be fixed at all. Chances are, the generation currently in school is to be thrown away, in the sense that given how the US works, nobody's going to seriously help them.

znpy··on Ask HN: Who's still keeping a DOS machine up because the business depends on it?
Meh, old architectures are relatively simple and you can get 95% of those via fpga softcores (some freely available, some paid) and run them on fpga. The rest can be implemented by a proper ee team.
znpy··on Rails World 2026 Opening Keynote [video]
“Fascist”… lol. Such a cliche.

> We can't hire or give anyone raises, but we will expect you to be more productive via throwing money into the slop void.

i see your point and i want to tell you it's pretty much the same with cloud computing, which is so much more expensive than running your own hardware... and yet nobody's really questioning cloud computing (except the oxide people, but they're still tiny)

the company i work for could probably spent half its yearly cloud bill in hardware and be fine for 3-5 years.

guess who discovered the same thing and booted google cloud off their books? dhh

that guy is simply enlightened.

znpy··on Italian parliament votes for return to nuclear energy
As an Italian… F-cking finally.
znpy··on Ask HN: How do you cope with AI being used to target and bomb children?
> Are we the baddies?

it's not like i'm the one using AI to do that. It's not correct to put me in the same bucket as the people performing the action

the real point (that you're likely missing) is that i don't care.

znpy··on Abandoning Scientific Linux Was a Mistake
I didn’t comment much on this whole topic but what I wondered is: why not Rocky Linux?

It’s quite literally the modern day CentOS

znpy··on Ask HN: How do you cope with AI being used to target and bomb children?
I don’t care really.

It’s not news. AI was already being used that way. It’s just that now better ai is being used to do that.

To be 100% honest, fifteen years of woke this and woke that trying to urge me to be sad or angry for this and for that have largely desensitised me to most things.

AI is being used to target and bomb children? Such is life. It is what it is.

znpy··on Tin: full-text search for Postgres
it's a weak point if you think about it. there are licenses to protect against that.

grafana does that, for example, living at the two extremes:

- proprietary stuff for what they need to run in the cloud for their own managed services offering

- gplv3 for everybody else

znpy··on Executive order on H-1B nonimmigrant visa administration
some theories say that when occupy wallstreet was happening something was needed to shift the attention off the class war.

some people call that a conspiracy theory, but looking back (how the attention to workers rights basically vanished and got replaced with other topics, and how the capitalist world got so much richer) it explains a lot of things very well.

This was already posted and ignored at https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=49751888 so i’ll ask the same question: again:

I don’t see any github link, is this 21st century embrace, extend, extinguish ?

znpy··on GPT-6 Astra Solves a WWI German Radio Cipher

so the true next frontier might not be just raw intelligence but rather larger context window?

Nice!
znpy··on GPT-6 Astra Solves a WWI German Radio Cipher
Maybe this is OT but I wonder if openai/anthropic have private versions of their models with wider context windows (4M tokens? 10M tokens?).

We know that the us government usually has private/custom versions of technology available to the general public, but much better.

znpy··on Executive order on H-1B nonimmigrant visa administration

znpy··on Executive order on H-1B nonimmigrant visa administration
> The fact that a large tech company lays 10,000 people off and then immediately turns around and petitions for thousands of H-1B employees is criminal.

the craziest thing is that this has to come from right-wight politicians. really gives you a sense of how much the left is f'd-up in 2026.
