zkomp··on pg_duckdb beta release: Even faster analytics in Postgres
Just the ability to query postgres itself using the duckdb engine is an amazing feature
zkomp··on PostgreSQL 16
identity probably refers to the ’IS’:

SELECT js, js IS JSON OBJECT "object?", js IS JSON ARRAY "array?", js IS JSON ARRAY WITH UNIQUE KEYS "array w. UK?", js IS JSON ARRAY WITHOUT UNIQUE KEYS "array w/o UK?" FROM (VALUES ('[{"a":"1"}, {"b":"2","b":"3"}]')) foo(js);

zkomp··on Sweden’s incoming cabinet says new nuclear reactors will be built
Will not happen. ”green” energy is not green- it consume massive amount of resources, it is expensive, short lived, destabilize the grid. I’m super happy my country is finally waking up from the horrible green hypnosis.
zkomp··on The US Is a Banana Republic: The 1% Own More Wealth Than the Entire Middle Class
I dont find it weird, just mildly disturbing having to sift through.

Still worth it.

zkomp··on The US Is a Banana Republic: The 1% Own More Wealth Than the Entire Middle Class
I disagree, and that is fundamental point. It is not just one view, you can pretty much check the different authors or find the original sources and they are not in agreement.

Propaganda is useless, but calling bullshit on another certain countrys propaganda, that is refreshing.

It is all your loss disregarding and hating on it

zkomp··on The US Is a Banana Republic: The 1% Own More Wealth Than the Entire Middle Class
Fine but zerohedge is not really one author or one agenda, it is an aggregate of many different views and you can’t trust all of them equally…
zkomp··on The first blue pigment discovered in 200 years is now commercially available
No it should be more like: I guess we should not put peanuts into vaccines without serious consideration.
zkomp··on Cyberpunk 2077: How 2020’s biggest video game launch turned into a shambles
Nitpicking but San Andreas does have AI where police chases work and NPC do not feel completely brainless, and cars do not only follow tracks, it does not feel empty and lifeless.
zkomp··on Apple Silicon M1 chip in MacBook Air outperforms high-end 16-inch MacBook Pro
Esc key vs touch bar does not influence how you can use vim?
zkomp··on Apple unveils M1, its first system-on-a-chip for portable Mac computers
And if you ask me, It has not been enough touch bar bashing...

I’ve opted to buy a 2015 Mac Book Pro this year, it might be easier to get over apple than the touch bar even...

zkomp··on How much do we need the police?
Generally agree but not that they are deterred by punishment alone, no. They will do whatever they get away with. Which would imply - “the right thing” must also be objectively better to the individual, not only backed by moral+force, for it to work generally.

(Not to mention the sociopaths are already present in politics and police. Drawn to power)

zkomp··on I Survived the “Destroying Angel” (2006)
When they are small, and if you only go by your own memory I'm sure it can happen...

"Destroying angels are sometimes mistaken for edible mushrooms such as young puffballs, button mushrooms, and meadow mushrooms."

zkomp··on Amazon’s Consumer Business Turned Off Final Oracle Database
Not yet, merge is broken though and postgres has an alternative that actually do handle races.
zkomp··on 8chan goes dark after hardware provider discontinues service
"Censorship is the suppression of speech, public communication, or other information, on the basis that such material is considered objectionable, harmful, sensitive, or "inconvenient". Censorship can be conducted by a government, private institutions, and corporations."/wikipedia

It is censorship, even if it is private companies and nobody got arrested etc, censorship is surpressing undesired information

zkomp··on Ethiopia Plants 350M Trees in One Day to Combat Drought and Climate Change
Look up terra preta, regular wood would just decompose and release the carbon back. You have to make charcoal out of it to be able to sequester carbon in the longer term (thousands of years)
zkomp··on Ethiopia Plants 350M Trees in One Day to Combat Drought and Climate Change
Letting trees grow and sucking up co2, and then making them into charcoal/biochar, putting that into the soil is one simple way to do it.

Even if not done, still think a living forest has to be much better than a plain or desert.

zkomp··on Fuzz rising
Neither Java nor Go for system programming. Java and its license is also controlled by one of the most evil companies, google at least pretend not to be evil...
zkomp··on Portugal’s radical drugs policy is working (2017)
I agree but it is how it always been. The war on drugs is called "war on drugs" not institutionalized rasism with a fancy spin to make people accept it...
zkomp··on Portugal’s radical drugs policy is working (2017)
The war on drugs is and has always been racist, it is targeting minorities and filling prisons. How it is precieved is a different thing.
zkomp··on Soil Erosion: Why soil is disappearing from farms
Hmm, afaik up to 10% biochar is considered beneficial in any soil and will keep nutrients fixated in the soil, more than that is mainly good since it removes co2 from the environment.

Why ship it? you just burn brush and waste where you have it and put the fire out before charcoal turns to ash and then innoculate it with compost and you are done..

zkomp··on Google Just Gave 2B Chrome Users a Reason to Switch to Firefox
See this comment a lot but absolutely disagree. Firefox works and is only getting better on MacOS. (And if being friends with MacOS is the point, then why not use Safari, does not get more friendly than that)
zkomp··on Understanding real-world concurrency bugs in Go
This is kind of expected given go give you no additional safety, only focusing on "simplicity". Rust seems so much more promising.
zkomp··on PostgreSQL 11.3 and 10.8
No, CTEs are not planned to remain a barrier, this is already fixed in the next version which is in feature freeze right now.

zkomp··on Was MongoDB Ever the Right Choice?
But postgres actually is that with json and jsonb. The postgres developers are also very focused on providing a better alternative to mongo. Afaik similarly configured postgres also challenge or beat mongodb in performance.
zkomp··on Gwern's Law: Ads cost you a tenth of your users
More interesting question: How do we know regular drug users are not self medicating.
zkomp··on Gut bacteria may offer a treatment for autism
In your own head you, it is probably benificial to think there is free will and you have choices.

But besides that, how can you ever believe such a thing without appealing to authority or religion. There cant be any free will; You are fully determined to execute on the given path. But that does not remove any responsibility - your unfree will is still yours just as the concequences, no...

(I mean, your will is determined in part by your gut. Everything you ever ate could tip the balance in some way.)

zkomp··on Movim – Federated, open-source alternative to Tumblr
Why? It is still spot on. The metaphor is perfect - no matter what specific bugs is fixed in PHP, the overall fractal of pure shit is still present - it is everywhere you look.
zkomp··on Golua – A Lua 5.3 engine implemented in Go
Yeah but can't we have both?

If you already have projects in go then a rust project will not be of any use, and vice versa...

zkomp··on Agile won the war but lost the peace
It is much more nuanced. Peace is about: accepting and appreciating what you have, and don't have (i.e appreciate the actual reality). Progress is making it better.

You will need both, change and the ability to see what is good and works in the current reality.

zkomp··on A note to our employees
Not necessary. It is narrow minded to only see employees as a resource to exploit.

Actually giving people a voice and representation is good and won't hurt
