zkhalique··on Neal Stephenson: Why I Am a Sociomediapath (2015)
Mike, I'm going to say that you can continuously improve and upgrade your career, you can't say the same about your wife and kids. So, it's more important to date and look for a wife early, while with your professional career you have all the time you need.

From your name, I'm going to guess you're Jewish, so you would have had even harder of a search, if you wanted to marry someone Jewish, than if you did not have this additional filter. So, don't worry... you've succeeded in choosing your wife, starting a family, and now you have plenty of time to keep improving in your career. Consider the opportunity cost of doing the reverse - career first, then kids.

Well, looks like he's back :)

So many people reposting his article!

zkhalique··on The rise and decline of Wikipedia [pdf]
Isn't this more describing a typical s-curve with regard to the information being mostly filled out? Wikipedia isn't a news site.

zkhalique··on The High-Stakes Race to Rid the World of Human Drivers
Unfortunately, that's where things are headed regardless. More cameras, cheaper sensors, big data. Every intersection will eventually give you a red light ticket. Etc etc.
zkhalique··on A Middle Ground Between Contract Worker and Employee
Here's the thing. If there is a marketplace where you set your own rates, you can still be a contractor. That's one of the tests that marketplaces like Uber failed.
zkhalique··on Is the new Zuckerberg fake charity an estate tax avoidance scheme?
Somehow from what I know of Mark Zuckerberg, he's not exactly looking to sit on all those billions. The motives the article is imputing to him are wrong.
zkhalique··on Launching a Mac App and Becoming the Top Paid App Globally
And how do they achieve it? Where do they even start?

We have two apps that have had nearly 4 million downloads across both app stores. Here's been the growth of our Mac app, for example: http://qbix.com/calendar . Our average reviews are very close to 5 stars out of 5 after thousands of reviews.

It's all organic. People just found us in the store. We were never contacted by Apple to get featured, and we had no way of contacting them, that we knew of. So I'm curious. It's not just about numbers.

zkhalique··on Launching a Mac App and Becoming the Top Paid App Globally
How do they get in touch with that "App Store Business Management" they spoke about? It's not like they make their emails available for any Joe Developer to talk to them.

zkhalique··on TPP banning requirements to transfer or access to source code of software
I happen to agree with your analysis, but I am not a lawyer either.

What does it matter that a state cannot compel a corporation to reveal its source code as a condition of distribution? The key is that the recipient of the distribution cannot make use of it without a license, pursuant to international copyright law and treaties. And you can indeed sue them for infringing on this, under copyright law, can you not? As a condition of use, they must also OFFER TO distribute the source code of any derivatives.

No one is forcing the actual distribution of the source code of derivatives. But if this distribution does not happen, the recipient CAN be sued for copyright infringement, lacking a license, no?

Faith usually has a reason behind it, as well. It's because you can rely on something, based on your past experience.

Belief, in general, is a psychological attitude towards a claim.

zkhalique··on A Way to Detect Bias
Isn't that, by the way, what YC has been saying for years in their rejection letters? "We're always surprised by how many of the last companies to make it wind up being the most successful"? Something like that.

zkhalique··on OAuth Has Ruined Everything
You shouldn't have to "Allow" a big provider like Facebook or Google to share your first name, last name and sex with a website, just so they can display it back to you.

Fred Wilson spoke about the rise of decentralized identity:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=R43OKYmGbhU#24:00

Do you think such a thing exists successfully yet? Anyone heard about good implementations?

zkhalique··on The UK is replacing roundabouts with traffic lights; US is doing the opposite
I think if the roundabouts were large, then in fact they would always be superior to traffic lights. I could probably run the math on that, but the idea is that the lights aren't sensitive to the actual flow of traffic, and often make things backed up for no reason.
zkhalique··on Workhorse drone company tests package deliveries in Ohio
A remote-controlled plane still needs someone to control it. A programmable robot does not.
zkhalique··on Workhorse drone company tests package deliveries in Ohio
I am worried about the coming dronepocalypse.

Enjoy your clear skies while you can. When no-name manufacturers can make cheap drones which can be launched by anonymous malicious people to e.g. drop bombs on Times Square, there is no accountability. How will our systems cope with that? For the first time we'll have autonomous, cheaply made robots among us. (Self-driving cars, by contrast, are not cheap to make.)

And even without malicious intent, there will always be a 1% chance that some big drone will drop on people's heads ...

zkhalique··on Former Stanford dean explains why helicopter parenting is ruining a generation
Depends on the major. I would say in many majors it's work experience that matters. I agree that the first job is easier to get when you're from Stanford, but that's it.
zkhalique··on Former Stanford dean explains why helicopter parenting is ruining a generation
Perhaps, following sentiments of Peter Thiel and others, it's not necessary to get into an elite school today, in order to succeed. If it was, then good education and success would still be scarce in today's world, as most people can't afford to go to Harvard, Stanford, etc.

Now we have MOOCs an schools can become centers for socializing, tutoring and testing. A great teacher can educate more than 300 people a year this way.

zkhalique··on Former Stanford dean explains why helicopter parenting is ruining a generation
This ia a bit like making sure you don't get sick until your 20s and not letting your immune system develop robust responses to disease agents.
zkhalique··on WebKit removes the 350ms click delay for iOS
In our framework, we have for a very long time had a Q.Pointer class which contained functionality to normalize things between touchscreens and non-touchscreens. Among other things, it had the "fastclick" event: https://github.com/Qbix/Platform/blob/master/platform/plugin...

There is far more than simply relying on a "click" in touchscreens. For example the "touchclick" event is for those times when the keyboard disappears because focus has been lost in a textbox, but the click will still succeed: https://github.com/Qbix/Platform/blob/master/platform/plugin...

Also, drag-drop is broken in touchscreens WebKit so you have to roll your own, and much more.

You're better off using a library.

That's not how it works. What your opinion is or even your lawyer's opinion is just an opinion. Ultimately someone can bring a case in a court and it's decided then. You can advance your legal theory as to why it is allowed, and it may be a sufficient defense, or it may not. There is no a priori certainty in these things... the closest you might get is precedent.

The jocular saying is that, in England, "everything which is not forbidden is allowed", while, in Germany, the opposite applies, so "everything which is not allowed is forbidden". This may be extended to France — "everything is allowed even if it is forbidden" — and Russia where "everything is forbidden, even that which is expressly allowed". While in North Korea it is said that "everything that is not forbidden is compulsory"
