ziziyO··on Show HN: We built PriceLevel to find out what companies pay for SaaS
Submitting fake overpriced quotes for my competitor’s products
ziziyO··on Ray-Ban Meta Smart Glasses
I don't understand how putting a camera on a pair of glasses is what meta/rayban wanted to spend time on.
ziziyO··on Had a call with Reddit to discuss pricing
This Tapatalk by chance? I only remember it because it would sign your posts with a little ad.
ziziyO··on Advertise on DuckDuckGo Search
Humans really are that simple. A lie, when repeated enough, can become truth.
ziziyO··on Google engineer jumps to death in NYC, second worker suicide in months
A worker kills himself at work by jumping off a work building and you are here trying to tell me speculation about work being involved has zero standing? I don't buy it.
ziziyO··on CAN Injection: Keyless car theft
Newer Toyotas (Rav4 Prime and 2022+ Model years) are not compatible with Comma due to encryption, I would guess that probably also defeats this attack.
ziziyO··on Any type of hormonal contraceptive may increase risk of breast cancer
> One of my girlfriends actually got mad

Am surprised only one did.

ziziyO··on CPSC calls for full recall of all Onewheel self-balancing electric skateboards
But then it’s a fivewheel! /s
ziziyO··on CPSC calls for full recall of all Onewheel self-balancing electric skateboards
Bug is a bit of a misnomer, it’s a constraint by the laws of physics due to the board having only a single wheel. If the board is being pushed beyond operating capacity, there is no graceful way to slow it down without the rider cooperating. If the rider never cooperates and the motor overheats, that’s when you see a nosedive.
ziziyO··on Youtube.js – full-featured wrapper around YouTube's private API
This is close to how recaptcha v3 works. It can look at the users behavior on the site and classify normal users vs bot users. You have to do some setup to feed your own set of user action data into recaptcha though.
ziziyO··on Watch an election being stolen in realtime
Show us the one where someone deliberately covers a camera with a mop.
ziziyO··on Why Covid-19 Is Here to Stay, and Why You Shouldn't Worry About It
The reason it’s so upbeat, is it is written by a phd candidate (in philosophy, not epidemiology) for a “think tank” called The Center for the Study of Partisanship and Ideology.

That think tank publishes gems like “colleges and universities are hostile to conservatives”, and has pushed back against COVID-19 mitigation efforts in the past. Not to be trusted.

ziziyO··on Tesla CEO berated employees, investors and tried to get rid of safety measures
No. Those are unhealthy behaviors that are dehumanizing to the recipient. You don’t treat your employees like this.
ziziyO··on Fewer young men are in the labor force, more are living at home
Are you saying that all lives matter?
ziziyO··on Fewer young men are in the labor force, more are living at home
When all you’ve known is privilege, equality can feel like oppression.
ziziyO··on Fierce Nerds
Why can’t we have both? A job where we can “actually do stuff” without getting mistreated by psychotic billionaires. There’s a lack of compassion in tech.
ziziyO··on What I learned in two years of moving government forms online (2018)
Wasn’t one of the the points of the article the complete opposite of this comment? You can improve the process without having to overhaul the whole thing. They don’t need to flip their tech stack for forms.
ziziyO··on Robinhood now has a 1-Star rating on the Google Play Store
We needed to put more people at risk because we couldn’t prove that they would get sick?
ziziyO··on If nearly all Airbnb reviews are positive, does that make them meaningless?
How do we make a single thumbs down not trigger a 5 alarm fire in the customer service department? Anyone else dread the onslaught of follow up from a company after you give a bad rating?
ziziyO··on What's Salesforce?
It's cult-y for sure. The money is there for the taking, much in the way a COBOL programmer can name their price.
ziziyO··on Berlin approves 5-year rent freeze
Why is greed so bad here? The problem isn’t greed it’s the demand in the face of the lack of supply.

Make other places more attractive or increase the supply available in this location.

ziziyO··on Ask HN: How much do you make at Facebook/Amazon/Apple/Netflix/Google/Microsoft?
Requiring the education section is kinda silly given the number of people that haven't gone to college in the industry.
ziziyO··on Ask HN: Self-taught developers, what repo helped land your first job?
Stack Overflow's "most dreaded X" in the developer survey is a good place to look. I work on Salesforce.com, the #2 most dreaded platform after Sharepoint.

Getting a job in that sector was as simple as having some general development experience and being moderately familiar with the platform.

ziziyO··on Robocalls Flooding Your Cellphone? Here’s How to Stop Them
Nomorobo has been hit/miss for me. 75% on catching robocalls, and I've had a false positive that belonged to a caller I wanted to talk to. I'm not enthusiastic about the results, but will be continuing to use it.
ziziyO··on My list of JavaScript interview questions
Lists like these are why imposter syndrome is so prevalent among engineers. You read something like this and suddenly you wonder if you're actually qualified to even be in the industry. Most of those questions will give no indication of a person's effectiveness as a frontend engineer, with the exception of the system design questions. Those are mostly rooted in actual problems that you might encounter as a frontend engineer.
ziziyO··on Introducing React Navigation for React Native
It's a power amplifier for development, especially if you don't have ObjC/Swift Devs. I picked it up in October 2016 at the request of a client who I had built a web app for. He asked for a proof of concept, and me being intrigued by React Native said I'd check it out and try to build a minimalistic proof of concept to see if we can proceed with the project.

I did not have any experience with mobile development or React, and only knew Vanilla JS, none of that new fancy ES6 stuff. I was able to be comfortably effective with React-Native in about a month. On the first weekend, I had a usable sandbox/playground app compiling with hot-reloading enabled which sped learning along in a huge way.

We're a couple hundred hours into that project now, and I still find React Native to be a joy to work with.

ziziyO··on Why I'm Not a React Native Developer
Thank you for linking those modules. I'm in the early stages of an app that will benefit from that functionality and admittedly my knowledge is based off of the first google result of a search for "react native background worker/task" (http://stackoverflow.com/questions/35376690/how-can-i-run-ba...). Which of course makes me an expert on the subject in this day and age.
ziziyO··on Why I'm Not a React Native Developer
Anything where you need to stay alive in the background and periodically do something.
ziziyO··on Browsing your website does not mean I want your spam
This has happened with me. I do Pardot implementations from time to time, and one time I forgot to delete a test record with my info out of a production system we were about to launch. Time goes by, and I end up hitting their site to check out a bug they wanted me to fix. This flagged my contact in their system as "warm", and no less than 15 minutes later my phone rings.

I suppose this speaks more to my competency level than to theirs, whoops!

ziziyO··on An administrator accidentally deleted the production database
Do it in the Staging or User Acceptance Testing environment.
