Too many developers don't really understand licensing. Everyone defaults to permissive to be politically correct, rather than on merit.

IMO the appearance of uniformity is not a co-incidence.

Seems to me as they are Italian oil testers, identifying non-Italian oil as a problem makes sense, because from their perspective it doesn't meet the standards they are paid to uphold.

My elderly next door neighbor told me she voted for Trump because she thought that's what her (now passed away) husband would have wanted.

If no one enforces the law, it's not illegal.

Adobe Reader for Linux hasn't been updated since 2013 but the flatpak still works fine.

I guess AI's talking to AI's about gibberish is the future of all energy use.

I think a big challenge for them is going to be the advent of cheap and relatively easy to use 3D printers. My kid never really got into lego, but he took to using a 3D printer almost immediately. Most of the time it is pre-made models, but he is learning how to use things like tinkercad and even blender. At his age I was digging through buckets of random lego parts to try to find the "perfect" piece for something I was trying to build, and getting frustrated because I could never find it.

IMO there is likely another agenda at play. For example, perhaps they will be told later that they could earn a reprieve if they "adjust" their search algorithm to silence critics and political enemies.

Long term, humans are redundant and their inefficiency is just something that will be factored out of the system.

> there's no real possibility of the transatlantic defence alliance suddenly completely failing

The USA is now threatening to wage war to annex both Canada and Greenland. For the life of me I don't understand why so many people are absolutely unwilling to take this seriously.

“America has no permanent friends or enemies, only interests” - Henry Kissinger

Or an authoritarian propped up by popular and powerful monopolistic corporations to which otherwise capable people depend on for their jobs.

And then you can privatize the entire system. And who will be first in line for it? You guessed it, SpaceX. Corruption from top to bottom.

To each their own, but for me my woodworking shop is one place I go to get away from screens.

> The poor man really has a stake in the country. The rich man hasn't; he can go away to New Guinea in a yacht. The poor have sometimes objected to being governed badly; the rich have always objected to being governed at all.

Well I mean this is it isn't it? Any election that does not go their way will be called "stolen" and decertified and there is no one left to challenge that. I'd love to be shown how it could be otherwise, someone convince me, please.

Out of curiosity, what conditions would you describe as prison-like that would drive someone to adopt an "alpha male" lifestyle in the US?

Have you warned the people who DO live there?

Out of ignorance and curiosity about 3d printing I bought a Prusa Mini a few years ago. My 10 year old (at the time) son took to using it immediately and figured out how to use it almost entirely on his own. It has been a great experience. I was thinking of upgrading to something larger and this drama has made the decision an easy one for me.

Another good one is the "Mad Gasser Of Mattoon" incident.

A neighbor of mine here in the US cut down a nearly 300 year old white oak that was in his yard to make room for a kitchen addition. I saved a small piece of a branch that I turned into a bowl, but the rest of it was cut up for firewood.

Bosch REAXX has a significant advantage, that being it is non-destructive to the saw blade when it activates. All you have to do is press a reset button and you are back to work. Not having the option of buying this tech instead of SawStop's in the US was a net negative for consumers, IMO.

> People using them as cheap computers ruined it.

IMO it is the people using them as embedded controllers for their products that ruined it, in combination with the poor decision by the Raspberry Pi folks to prioritize commercial demand for the products over hobbyist demand during the pandemic. We hobbyists "made do" with other solutions in that time, and now there's no real need to go back.

I'm typing this on Fedora 41 (Gnome 47, the latest drop, totally stock no extensions) on a nearly 10 year old 8GB/i5 Thinkpad X1 Carbon and it works just fine. If anything it feels like Gnome has gotten faster with the last few releases.

Flatpak uses OSTree dedup.

For doing things like this I like using the "watch" command.

I'm strongly in agreement with you. I thought the main museum was fascinating. You could only find it "boring" if you have no curiosity about the history of world war two or you just don't care about the human impact of the war on the communities and the people it affected.

For Gnome there's the Hanabi extension.

Great! I am way more likely to try out software when it's available as a regular package that I already know how to manage.

Fedora uses tmpfs for /tmp. I think it still makes a lot of sense to use tmpfs for a heavily written-to transient file system.
