zippykid··on Why ramen is so valuable in prison
Ramen is also one of the easiest things to traffic and trade with in prison. You can easily transport 10 - 15 packs of ramen on your person. Other items are bulkier and thus more visible under your uniform.

Then there's the whole thing about return on investment, in Texas, ramen rarely loses its value.. you can buy it for 30 cents from commissary, and you can sell it for 30 cents, technically you can trade 3 ramens for services or items that would normally cost $1.00.

zippykid··on Why does 500 Startups' www point here?
We've already fixed it.
zippykid··on Why does 500 Startups' www point here?
Thanks for pointing this out, we're working to fix this now.
zippykid··on Speed up your sites with PageSpeed for Nginx
Thanks Josh, I'll update them tomorrow/saturday. Did you create an issue by any chance?
zippykid··on Speed up your sites with PageSpeed for Nginx
Druiid, do you mind testing our instructions here? http://github.com/zippykid/nginx/ ?
zippykid··on Speed up your sites with PageSpeed for Nginx
Jeremy, image optimization/compression, javascript minification/combination etc are some of the benefits we've tested and had tremendous success with.
zippykid··on Zend Optimizer+ now open-source on Github
Any background on what the difference is between this, and the other op code caches already on the market?
zippykid··on Things I learnt as a CEO in 2012
nroach, I can't speak for others. But I've struggled with the whole 'marketing a product' thing. It's easy for me to make a good product, it's harder for me to tell people about it.

Something about my past has made me think that if I tell people about how awesome my product is, is gloating. So, I'd just say it.. "It doesn't suck".. which is a funny way of saying it's awesome. But if you don't know me, it may look like I don't think it's worth trying.

zippykid··on My experience with WPEngine
Thanks for mentioning the email Jacque. And you're correct, currently we don't handle multi site installs due to some issues with MU and our clusters.
zippykid··on ZippyKid - The Next Generation of WordPress Hosting
Thanks Harper. As you can tell, your ideas about 2-factor are high on our list already :)
zippykid··on ZippyKid - The Next Generation of WordPress Hosting
lots of hiccups when we first started, which is why it took so long to get started.

The key is learning how to live within the confines of the system, and how to leverage it.

zippykid··on 10 Million hits a day with Wordpress using a $15 server
most of the caching plugins for WordPress will generate static html files, or static html stored in memcached, which can further be written to disk using nginx' fastcgi_cache, or something like varnish.
zippykid··on 10 Million hits a day with Wordpress using a $15 server
Great post, the 10 million hits is a bit misleading, WordPress is a cookie monster, so your default configuration of Varnish is going to have issues, when people start adding comments etc.

WordPress itself isn't the scalability problem anymore, it's usually how the blog is being used, and when the db needs to be interacted with.

At the same time, a lot of our customers use WordPress as a CMS, and have static home pages and sub pages, which we serve in a similar fashion.

https://github.com/zippykid/php-varnish the plugin there, will be handy when you actually start making blog posts.

zippykid··on How My Lifestyle Business Became a Startup
Great post Clint, and good inspiration for "older" founders. We found the same niche ourselves, "hosting" companies are a dime a dozen, but our company in a year of operation has lost less than 10 customers. Solve an emotional problem with empathy, and the world will flock to you.
zippykid··on WP-CLI: command-line interface for WordPress
very nice work, we're looking forward to seeing how we can help with this. This should pave the way for more hosting companies to provide some excellent hosting solutions on top of WordPress
zippykid··on Pre-branded domain names for startups
I agree. I bought ZippyKid.com from Brandstack last year. I would never have thought of it myself, even though all my initial customers had said how fast I was in responding to emails, and how much faster their sites were after they switched to me.
zippykid··on Do the Simplest, "Dumbest" Possible Thing that Will Work - Inspired by Flickr
KISS, or KID, in the end, what this really means is, don't try and over architect something for the right way of doing things..

I've recently made the switch from being a high paid consultant, to entrepreneur, and I'm doing the same things..I got paid to come in and fix in my past career. First, get shit to work, then worry about optimizing it. Having the best deployment framework in place, is great, only if you have customers that need deployment.

zippykid··on DeployMint: A Git based Staging and Deployment System for WordPress
this looks very promising, how does this differ from the one click staging plugin by WPEngine?

Your contact form short code isn't working, can you enable it? I'd like to contact you :)
zippykid··on Ask HN: Specifically, how did you get your first 100 (B2B) paid customers?
In that case, don't worry about 100. Get your first user, through your friends who have ties within the agencies. See if your solution works for them, and then go from there.

So ... One customer at a time

zippykid··on Ask HN: Specifically, how did you get your first 100 (B2B) paid customers?
First.. If you don't have special insight into the industry, how do you know that they have a problem, and how do you know your solution solves the problem that needs solving the most?

Otherwise new orbit's suggestions are very good

zippykid··on Show HN: "Never wait on hold again" service built with Rails and Twilio
my thoughts exactly. pre-mature optimization is the root of all evil. When I first heard of this idea I ran through a list of ways to abuse it and make you guys go bankrupt :), but I've found there are far fewer crooks out there than there are honest people.

I love how you solved a problem for me without me having to jump through hoops.

True to the spirit of a hacker. This just screams of awesome execution, it's very refreshing to see in these days of startups.

zippykid··on Show HN: "Never wait on hold again" service built with Rails and Twilio
I've used this service a couple of times, and everytime I don't have to wait on hold, I smile.
zippykid··on How I lost 30 pounds in 2010. A simple guide for overweight hackers like me
frankc, I agree with you too. My point with the post was to show what's possible, and more importantly, to not sweat the small stuff, like what's low glycemic, or whatever. The simplest rule, is eat less. move more.

As I said in the post, eventually, you'll want to talk to a nutrionist, eating less can easily be changed into "starvation".. which will get you to lose weight, but you're not going to be healthy.

I personally don't know what's high glycemic, or low glycemic, all I know is I feel better, I'm stronger than I used to be (thanks to training and exercise with Steve), and i'm only eating items that have ingredients I can pronounce :).

zippykid··on How I lost 30 pounds in 2010. A simple guide for overweight hackers like me
thanks. Steve, my trainer, motivator guy, is getting me to eat more protein as well now. Really getting into the nutritional aspect of things now.
zippykid··on How I Set Up and Sold a Product Using Unbounce, Wufoo and Chargify
I'm part of the Engineers he's talking about :), basically the point of the post was that we kept doing what needed to about the free analyzer, we'll have some new stuff to show for that by the end of the week.

Yet, Ryan was able to test out the market for a new product, without using up me or the other programmer.

zippykid··on How important is YSlow Score?
I got a score of 0 from your site, but YSlow on my browser gave me a 74. Hmmm is the analyzer slow right now?
zippykid··on Ask HN: Best resources to learn SEO?
My company has built a tool that aims to give you the basic page analysis from an SEO perspective fairly quickly. We had some decent reviews from people a few months back.

http://www.pearanalytics.com/

I'd recommend you run the tool against some sites, and tweak things around.

zippykid··on Ginzametrics (YC S10) Aims To Bring Simplicity To SEO Software
Looks good so far, I signed up for a beta invite. One thing I noticed, you have radio buttons for what I'm using for analytics, I would suggest you make them checkboxes, so I could've selected Google and Clicky.

Just my $0.02 :)
