zipperhead··on Ask HN: What are your go to shell one-liners?
One super-useful key combo which is often overlooked is C-x-e, which edits the current command in $EDITOR. Very useful when dealing with history and long commands that need parameter editing.
zipperhead··on I quit my job to work full time on my open source project
I wonder if atuin could parse tags if given at the end of a command, after a # ?

sudo somecommand arg1 arg2 # admin mpv arg1 # media

I have work-related stuff that I'd love to be able to tag and then filter history based on that. Hmm now that I think of it, maybe it will just work like that anyway.

Love atuin btw, best of luck!

zipperhead··on How Reddit became the enemy [video]
It's not so simple These "deadbeat users" are the ones generating the content.
zipperhead··on If you (still) work at Twitter and you can code, head to the HQ now
This completely ignores the fact that twitter is run on advertising income, and that it's only value is its users. Twitter as a brand is in the tank.
zipperhead··on Fixing macOS Zsh Terminal History Settings
I'd given up on shared history because it never worked the way I like. This looks very promising, thank you.
zipperhead··on Ask HN: Why aren't code diagram generating tools more common?
PlantUML does sequence diagrams very nicely, using a pretty simple markup language. It becomes very easy to draw up sequence diagrams quite quickly after using it for a short period of time.
zipperhead··on Ask HN: Open-source software authors – why do you do it?
I am the same, but I'm not very good about telling people I would consider it if given a PR. Maybe I should publish something like you've said here as an upfront policy.
zipperhead··on Ask HN: Does anyone else lie on the internet?
There's a lot of misunderstanding of the word karma. This "I still regret/think about" you are referring to is actually one of the true natures of karma. Your actions have an affect, often or especially on yourself. Sorry if that all sounds preachy, but it's something to reflect on. Often it's just not worth it, and it turns out sometimes that you're only hurting yourself.
zipperhead··on Firefox 91
I just switched from TST to sidebery. I would have preferred to stay with TST, but the ability to switch between different trees is a killer feature.
zipperhead··on Baseball's dirty little secret is out – we decided to experiment
I think you're ignoring the entertainment value of hitters getting more hits. In general, more balls in play means more exciting scenarios. Baseball, a beautiful game, has an innate natural balance in its dimension and timing. Yes, I like a good pitchers duel as well. But for reasons of likely the sticky stuff, the scales are currently tilted too far towards the pitcher.
zipperhead··on Ask HN: Which tools/services have your favorite UI/UX?
I absolutely hated Gerrit when I was first introduced to it. And I absolutely agree with what you've said.
zipperhead··on 17 year old Firefox feature request fixed
Holy crap, I just realized this is why I've pasted the text instead of URL all these years!
zipperhead··on Bill Evans – The Creative Process and Self-Teaching (2007) [video]
Funny, I started my obsession about two months ago. I've basically always had Sunday at the Village Vanguard somewhere in my rotation for the last 10 years, but I've only started branching out with other Evans albums recently, beginning with Undercurrents. So I'm following replies here with some anticipation.
zipperhead··on Ask HN: Overcoming Burnout / Imposter Syndrome
This is very insightful. Like, I've been on the other side of this (hoping this experienced new hire will fix up some of the mess I don't have time to do), and have probably never even realized it.

In fairness, if the new person is competent it's usually very clear early on, and they tend to move on to better things fairly quickly.

zipperhead··on Reversing Mental Age with Psychedelics
We're seeing a lot of articles starting to praise the use of psychedelics. This seems a bit dangerous - these are serious drugs that can potentially mess you up - I'm not saying that they shouldn't be used, but it would be nice if interested people (people who are going to try them anyway) could go somewhere and have some medical/therapeutic guidance through their experience. It would be so much safer.
zipperhead··on Roman mosaic floor found under Italian vineyard
If you like this stuff, I recommend checking out the UK show 'Time Team'. Each episode they do an archaeological dig spanning three days, to see if they can piece together what was going on in a particular site. Many of their digs are on old Roman sites in England.

There's 17 seasons of it, most of which is on Amazon Prime (I think youtube has episodes as well). It's been my goto show lately for interesting entertainment during the pandemic.

zipperhead··on The Invention of the AeroPress (2014)
Yeah, I assumed that a quality burr grinder is more important for fine grinds than coarse; I guess that's probably not true. I'll give it a shot, thanks.

I've only been using the french press more now because my home office is upstairs, and the Clever Dripper stays in the kitchen. With the press I can bring it up with me and save 4 whole minutes in my 'commute' :-)

zipperhead··on The Invention of the AeroPress (2014)
I have an AeroPress, a french press, and a Clever Dripper.

While I like the AeroPress, I don't find it makes enough coffee in one go. The Clever Dripper is basically a french press with a #4 filter, so you still get a filtered cup - no sludge (you do miss out on the oils though). It's a foolproof method to a great cup of coffee.

zipperhead··on The Invention of the AeroPress (2014)
Curious: I have an Encore and I still get a bit of fine sludge. I'm grinding on about 21. What setting are you using?
zipperhead··on My Emacs Productivity Tricks/Hacks
Yes, vim has a multiple cursor plugin that is useful for things like this: https://github.com/terryma/vim-multiple-cursors.

It's not as good as sublime in my experience, and I haven't used kakoune, but it's very serviceable.

zipperhead··on Firefox 72.0
If you want to talk about tab behaviour, you might want to have a look at the Tree Style Tabs extension:

https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/tree-style-ta...

Tabs are placed in the sidebar, nested in collapsible trees, with a scrollbar. It's a major game changer.

zipperhead··on Switching from Chrome to Firefox
Hmm, I've been using a combination of multi-account containers and Cookie AutoDelete [0]. I'm going to try temporary containers out - it should have a broader protection coverage than just deleting cookies.

zipperhead··on Jony Ive: 8 hits and 8 misses from 20 years at Apple
Doesn't this make it unrepairable though? (Honest question - I don't own a MacBook)
zipperhead··on Apollo 11 in Real Time
I'm just leaving this on in the background on the home theater PC, and switching back to it from the Roku to check in on things. Truly amazing.
zipperhead··on Handy Keymaps in Vim

zipperhead··on Audible and audiobooks, the fastest growing part of publishing
Oh please no, not for me. A well-read audiobook becomes an integral part of the art form. An example is the recent Beastie Boys book, which is read by the two of them, plus a whole host of guest readers. Some of whom completely transform the experience.
zipperhead··on Death by PowerPoint: The slide that killed seven people
Indeed. The conclusion is:

```` Contingent on multiple tile loss thermal analysis showing no violation of M/OD criteria, safe return indicated even with significant tile damage ````
That's going to be difficult for management to push back against.
zipperhead··on Librefox: Firefox with privacy enhancements
Yes, I find the about:config option stickiness behaviour isn't intuitive. I am guessing that a lot of people don't realize that if you set options in user.js they stay set until you manually unset them, even if you remove the user.js file.
zipperhead··on Twitter forces all new users to enter a valid phone number
I agree. I would rather pay them some fee. But they don't seem to want to monetize their service via user fees.
zipperhead··on Stop Using `rm` in Bash. Use `del`
I use borg backup running via cron multiple passes per day. When needed you can mount any backup as a file system for easy restoration. Yes, short-lived files can't be recovered, but that's something I am willing to live with.
