zip1234··on Wind farms can offset their emissions within two years, new study shows
Estimated 350m animals killed by cars every year in US alone
zip1234··on Wind farms can offset their emissions within two years, new study shows
Road noise is almost never mitigated. Low speed limits could mitigate some of it, but many people drive faster than the speed limits.
zip1234··on Measuring the impact of zoning on housing in a city
Would love to see San Francisco
zip1234··on Ford Mustang Mach-E using BlueCruise at time of crash: NTSB
Though such rules and precedent may be clear, they don't put any blame on road design or manufacturers of cars. Someone driving 150mph--it is the drivers fault even though the manufacturer knows that there is no road that this is possible.
zip1234··on Ford Mustang Mach-E using BlueCruise at time of crash: NTSB
Great, lets investigate every single fatal crash and make actual changes based on those. Let's not limit it to crashes involving systems like Bluecruise or Autopilot. If human drivers caused a fatal crash, let's make changes so that doesn't happen again as well.
zip1234··on 'Lavender': The AI machine directing Israel's bombing in Gaza
It is not the primary source of their weapons, nor is it the primary source of their explosives. It might be "a primary source" now as your linked article mentions, but certainly not THE primary source. Hamas is primarily given weapons by Iran.
zip1234··on The built environment and the determination of fault in urban pedestrian crashes
Bikes need a network, not just lanes. Also many bike lanes just randomly end, aren't protected/separated properly, etc.
zip1234··on The built environment and the determination of fault in urban pedestrian crashes
Yes, I heard it was also in part because the road was often muddy so it allowed pedestrians to stay out of the mud.
zip1234··on Old vs. new growth trees and the wood products they make
The article isn’t fully accurate. For example old growth is not more knot free. That depended on a lot of factors. Maybe the wood used for windows was more knot free but that is a different matter entirely. Here is a counterpoint article: https://www.finewoodworking.com/forum/old-growth-vs-second-g...
zip1234··on Induced demand is not a useful concept
Have you noticed that all the projections used to justify the cost of adding more lanes to roads are always wrong? Maybe there is some economic growth but almost never enough to justify the cost of such sprawl.
zip1234··on Induced demand is not a useful concept
So there is no other way to get to and from Manhattan except driving?
zip1234··on Induced demand is not a useful concept
The author states that widening the M-25 only achieved a 10% increase in throughput. This is not good and the definition of diminishing returns.
zip1234··on 'You have blood on your hands', US senator tells Zuckerberg [video]
Political grandstanding--Graham compares guns to social media, except somehow skips over the idea that guns are actually designed to kill. How many people are killed from social media use?
zip1234··on Why is everything so ugly?
It's actually often enforced in zoning codes as "breaking up the massing".
zip1234··on Fewer people are buying electric cars in the US
Seeing as only 41% of road costs are paid for by license + fuel taxes, those EV owners are already paying for more than half the cost of the roads through state/federal income taxes.
zip1234··on Fewer people are buying electric cars in the US
In the US gas/fuel taxes cover only 41% of road costs. All usage fees together is 55%.
zip1234··on StyleX – Meta's styling library
Refactoring and knowing where styles are used. In css sometimes the btn class does something and sometimes not. With stylex it is explicit.
zip1234··on Robotaxis 'do not belong in the city of Los Angeles,' lawmaker says
Honestly, there are so many places where art absolutely is terrible. If AI generation can make higher quality art more accessible to more areas then it is a huge win.
zip1234··on Detroit wants to be the first big American city to tax land value
Detroit has blight. LVT addresses property speculators that buy land to sit on it for 10 years and do nothing with it. With LVT they have to either pay up, develop it, or sell it. All options good for the city.
zip1234··on Ray-Ban Meta Smart Glasses
Even gen 1 is great--replaces need for airpods for music/calls if I am going out and they look nice.
zip1234··on Ray-Ban Meta Smart Glasses
They are slightly bigger but not everyone has the same face shape. Looks like they made them even slimmer in this gen and have more options.
zip1234··on Ray-Ban Meta Smart Glasses
I see a lot of people complaining about display. These are not meant for that use case. Maybe someday the tech will be available to have a display. That said, I have v1 Rayban Stories and use them as my daily driver sunglasses. I use them mainly for answering calls or listening to music but take occasional photos.
zip1234··on It’s time for Americans to embrace small cars
Most cars also have racks on top for when additional storage is needed for a weekend trip. A subaru with car top carrier is a fairly common sight.
zip1234··on It’s time for Americans to embrace small cars
and also make it so smaller cars are also tax deductible and not just cadillac escalades (6000 lb+ vehicle tax deduction for small business). Or just remove that deduction entirely.
zip1234··on US Army Physical Fitness Test: Normative Data on 6022 Soldiers (1994)
Medical/JAG/chaplain corps officers are generally not considered 'line officers' and cannot command combat forces which is one of the reasons for the different training.
zip1234··on Heat Pumps – The Well-Tempered Future of A/Cs
- spray foam around/behind outlets on exterior walls (major leak point) which can be done often by just removing the outlet covers

- spray foam around windows (requires removing trim)

- caulk joints/spray foam rim joist in basement/crawl space

- spray foam around any attic can lights/duct work

- make sure ducts and air returns are sealed properly

zip1234··on Wall Street scooped up a third of Texas single family homes sold last year (2022)
People want their home to be an 'investment' and rules get created to protect the investment and keep home prices going up. This is the natural result of those policies. In a world where supply can keep up, home prices are stagnant and extracting rents from land is not as great of a deal.
zip1234··on New York City will charge drivers going downtown
What do you consider to be a well designed city?
zip1234··on New York City will charge drivers going downtown
The benefits are why people would pay the price of the negative externalities. If not deemed to be worthwhile, there are other means of transportation that have less negative externalities.
zip1234··on New York City will charge drivers going downtown
The average speed driving in Manhattan is something like 7mph. There is not enough space for cars. Congestion charge is such a no-brainer easy solution here.
