zimmund··on Show HN: A simple script to post the top HN stories to Discord
I mostly read the stories with high score (or comments), so with this script I get notifications on Discord (via webhook) for new posts above a certain score and it links to both the shared URL and to the HN comments.

It takes the stories via Algolia: https://hn.algolia.com/api

Hope someone else finds it useful! :)

zimmund··on MkDocs 1.0
If anyone finds it useful, some time ago I made a Docker image of `mkdocs` [1] (with a few extensions, check the dockerfile for details).

zimmund··on GitLab Web IDE
> I'd be surprised if GitHub doesn't follow in tow

Considering Microsoft has VS Code, I think during the following years Atom will be phased out (or, in enterprise terms, "maintained by the community") in favor of that editor and they will focus on improving the Git aspect of the application, perhaps integrating the existing GitHub application into VS Code as a rich extension.

zimmund··on Facebook confirms that it tracks mouse movements
Correlation doesn't imply causation.

(You can always open the browser inspector and check network traffic for each page or, if you are using Chrome, dive into chrome://net-internals/ )

zimmund··on UTC Is Enough for Everyone, Right?
source?
zimmund··on F.C.C. Repeals Net Neutrality Rules
Sure, it's easy to drown people with a link and a 210 pages document, but can you briefly explain it with your own words and voice your opinion for us?
zimmund··on Changes to Google Scholar
If there's one thing Google does right it's fragmentation :)
zimmund··on How NASA Kept the ISS Flying While Harvey Hit Mission Control
Agreed. The Verge articles' are quite bland lately... The HN discussions around them are more informative.
zimmund··on Is it unethical for me to not tell my employer I've automated my job?
So if -for example- you knew the details of fabrication of your car: you consider that you'd still buy a car with a chassis that was deliberately weakened by an employee, instead of just buying a car with an -unknowingly- faulty chassis?

Why would you accept something that, if not tampered, would be better than the alternative? When there's bad intentions or tampering, you'll have a result that is broken to some degree for sure. If everyone does their jobs as good as they can, you'll only face a chance of something being broken. You can always improve over mistakes, not so much over bad intentions.

zimmund··on A therapy chatbot for depression
Just in case someone wants to know, if you got to this bot without looking at their page, it's paid, it doesn't tell you anything about it, and after using it for ~two weeks it stops working and asks you to pay 39 usd per month.
zimmund··on Show HN: Get Paid to Build Your Next Side Project
It's also not clear how it will be used later. It could be used to crop/remove watermarks or copyright messages, and I wouldn't develop it if that's its purpose.
zimmund··on A hands-on introduction to video technology: image, video, codec and more
> High frame rates are beautiful

Yes, but it all depends on what you are seeing. Games look fantastic, VR probably looks great.

For movies, I'd stick with 24 fps, as it keeps the "style" of film. Subtle things like the motion blur produced at that framerate and how we see/expect the movement in the screen are altered when the framerate changes.

As with a lot of things, it depends on what you want to achieve!

zimmund··on Ask HN: What language-agnostic programming books should I read?
Introduction to algorithms[1] is a great book to improve how you think about code and the way you implement your solutions. Even if you are a seasoned programmer you'll find it useful.

zimmund··on Hub: Wraps Git with extra features that make working with GitHub easier
A good thing about this (being an open source project) is that anyone can fix it and create a PR :D
zimmund··on VisUAL: A highly visual ARM emulator
This was posted here some time ago; in that thread there are links to other tools that you may find interesting: https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=10787226
zimmund··on Introducing the Google Assistant SDK
Interesting... Maybe this is the way to bring Assistant to the desktop? (and, perhaps, to Linux?)
zimmund··on New APIs to power customer engagement in Direct Messages
Building a useful client is a way to build on the platform. It's giving the users an alternative to use your platform...

Twitter is so afraid of losing their users that it's becoming a self-fulfilling prophecy.

zimmund··on A new home for Google Open Source
What they are saying is that eventually this site will be removed because Google is constantly killing their own projects after a couple of years.
zimmund··on Show HN: Discopedia
It's an interesting idea, but the UI looks really... well, not standard. And I definitely didn't like that there is no link to the youtube videos, which is the only thing I'd like to get without having to inspect the page (and there's where I decided to close it).
zimmund··on Instagram grows to 1M active advertisers
I noticed a change in the last few days too. It went from one or two ads each session to one ad every few photos :/
zimmund··on How Super Mario Run Onboards New Users
I wonder through how many hoops devs have to jump to ship a "simple" game for a big company.

The numerous steps until the game starts makes me think there are more managers than actual [gaming] experts chipping in on the concept. The game is more fun if those who are making it have fun too!

zimmund··on Trigger Happy: An opensource clone of IFTTT
On top of that, this kind of interactions are usually used by power users (individuals, not business), so it wouldn't be as popular nor profitable as they need (e.g.: Google Reader was a fantastic tool but they shut it down anyway).
zimmund··on Git from the inside out
how would you implement it?
zimmund··on Tower for Windows
I think if you are using Linux you are most probably familiar with the CLI (and probably preffer to solve things there instead of using the "magic" of GUI programs). Of all the possible markets for Tower, Linux is probably the least profitable one.
zimmund··on Ask HN: What is your favorite Google chrome extension?
`Ctrl+Shift+C` to select the element, `Delete` to remove it :)
zimmund··on Show HN: Curabase – Curate a list of links for yourself, your team, or the world
Are you planning to open source it?
zimmund··on Why are submarines demagnetized?
Thanks for your aclaration, it helped me understand the idea :)
zimmund··on Ask HN: Share your favourite bash/zsh aliases
Simple Vagrant aliases:

  alias vup='vagrant up'
  alias vdn='vagrant halt'
  alias sv='ssh vagrant'
Some apt-get ones:

  alias sapu='sudo apt-get update'
  alias sapi='sudo apt-get install'
  alias sapr='sudo apt-get remove'
When I'm in Windows I use Cygwin (as a dropdown terminal[1]), these are useful:

  alias tk='taskkill -f -im'
  alias ping='PING'
  alias flush='ipconfig /flushdns'

zimmund··on Argentina's voting machine system leaked?
Argentinian here. The bitcoin is not that big around here, there are some enthusiast but it's not something you see every day.
