Printers are just a loss leader for toner.
zimbu668··on AWS multiple services outage in us-east-1
Of course lots of AWS services have hidden dependencies on us-east-1. During a previous outage we needed to update a Route53(DNS) record in us-west-2, but couldn't because of the outage in us-east-1.

zimbu668··on Mimicking the cells that carry hemoglobin as a blood substitute
In college the course on Maxwell's equations was taught by Dr. Lord. Every time I walked in to class I thought "Let there be light"
zimbu668··on I kind of like rebasing
> nobody would bother re-testing all those n-1 commits after the fix was added

I do.

zimbu668··on I kind of like rebasing
You should do this instead:

git push —-force-with-lease repo branch

zimbu668··on Atuin – Magical shell history
I would occasionally manage to start a bash shell without executing my profile, which means HISTFILESIZE is not set and bash would truncate my history on the first command I ran. zsh history may have a similar problem.
zimbu668··on Agile is people, the rest is commentary
> if a card is in the Done column, you can assume the > code is in version control, deployed to production > and checked to make sure it didn't explode on impact.

I guess you've never seen a team argue over "Definition of Done" for months.

zimbu668··on Archive of medieval books and manuscripts discovered in Romanian church
Can't speak for OP, but I've heard snails are a recurring theme in medieval manuscripts: https://justhistoryposts.com/2017/11/13/medieval-marginalia-...
zimbu668··on California’s population declines, again, as state grapples with housing crisis
Not quite the same, but you may own CA taxes on stock options if you earned them while living in CA even if you don't live there when you cash them in.

I didn’t.
zimbu668··on Unity employees ‘mad and stressed out’ amidst unexpected layoffs
#1 is Klarna, the company that will let you finance a pizza over the next 4 months. Not sure I'd be trumpeting that as innovative.
zimbu668··on Cold Showers
> The people above you suck.

No, actually they don't. In the time I've been there they've 10x the size of the company. Maintained majority control through multiple rounds of funding. Significantly increased salaries. Provided a great work life balance. Etc.

Why are developers obsessed with how many additional developers they could hire with hypothetical savings?

zimbu668··on Cold Showers
I know how to multiply by 12, thanks. I asked the previous commenter if the $340,800 actually made a difference and he hasn't replied.
zimbu668··on Cold Showers
So you saved, $28,400 a month. Did that make a material difference to the company? I often tell people above me I could save us $10k a month at AWS and generally the response is, "Yeaaaaaaah that's great, could you do XYZ instead to help us land an additional $1M in ARR?"
zimbu668··on Pushing back against contract demands is scary but please try anyway
Just found this, you can buy a share of the original Listerine Mouthwash royalties from 1881: https://auctions.royaltyexchange.com/orderbook/asset-detail/...

They’re asking $2.1M and they earned $140k last year.

zimbu668··on A Bitcoin Mine at a Natural Gas Well in Texas
The fact that they don't indicates it would probably produce more net emissions than not building it.
zimbu668··on The Gates of Hell

zimbu668··on A bad grade that changed the U.S. constitution (2017)
No, they ratified the amendment which had already abolished slavery, a purely symbolic act. The ratification was unanimous so it's not like there was any opposition to it in 1995.
zimbu668··on Simple as in SNMP

zimbu668··on Amazon RDS on Graviton2 Processors
Could be a region thing. us-west-1 for example is notoriously slow to get new features, including this one. us-east-1 has it.
zimbu668··on Time to Ban Stock Repurchases

zimbu668··on The Longest Record Broken: Gold/Silver Ratio Hits Highest in Over 5,000 Years
Gold has a couple other things going for it. It's difficult to counterfeit, anything denser than it is more expensive(and usually radioactive). Tungsten is close enough to be a viable alternative, but is very difficult to work with, so this is only a modern (1980s on) problem. Additionally it is "appropriately" rare. Try using sand as a currency, you'll need a fleet of dump trucks. You can transport a significant amount of gold on your person, but if you tried that with Californium you would probably lose the dust sized particle that represents your life's savings.
zimbu668··on Who is Facebook's mysterious “Lan Tim 2”?
You entirely missed the point of my comment when I said

> I have never used FaceBook [sic] login for anything

That was in response to someone saying you could avoid this by not using Facebook login. Maybe before calling out others' naïveté you should work on your reading comprehension.

zimbu668··on Who is Facebook's mysterious “Lan Tim 2”?
That is not true, I have never used FaceBook login for anything, and certainly not for the 12 services listed in my "Off-Facebook Activity" tab.
zimbu668··on The growth of command-line options, 1979-Present

zimbu668··on San Francisco declares state of emergency to prepare for coronavirus
Only 426 people tested in the entire US, so I think "hardly any testing" in SF is a fair statement.
