I’m somewhat tech literate, but pretty ignorant about e-book file types.
Maybe several people on this list conspired to create an article listing their products and then all came here and upvoted the article?
There's a lot of value in getting onto the front page of HN.
I can't agree more with your comment about wishing people would reply with reasoning rather than simply downvoting.
When I jump into a heated conversation or comment on an emotional topic, I am fully aware that I'm asking for downvotes without responses. But that has served as a negative reinforcement for making said comments, which leads to me engaging in those conversations much less often.
My point is, I'm not sure this is a bug. I'm pretty sure its a feature.
The juice just isn't worth the squeeze to me. (Turns out I was the one being squeezed anyway.)
Side note: I've noticed these topics tend to burn out quickly because the post and the posters are getting tons of down votes and, due to the "algorithm" (dang), being slowly pushed away from the top. Speaking of: Moderating is often a thankless job, so thank you.
I never even click on the WSJ opinion section.
It should be noted that WSJ has always held to the fact that there is no substantiated evidence of voter fraud throughout the articles written around the election. Again, not speaking to the opinion section (bc I've never read it).
I don’t usually engage in politics on HN, but I think this goes beyond politics. How are we not supposed to be angry, after watching ppl be gassed and shot with rubber bullets, about how the Capitol Police responded 6 Jan? This is much bigger than politics.
My opinion is that someone should file the proper case(s) that would eventually lead to SCOTUS overturning the Citizens United ruling. Then we should move to publicly-funding races. And we should DEFINITELY remove PAC money from justice races (why is that even a thing?).
But this country has a long history of increasingly corrupt government cranking out pork barrel projects and ignoring us little people. That will not change any time soon unfortunately, without a massive revolution.
Now my phone is a tool that I use for work and my side projects. Not to mention that I have a family that depends on me and I on them. We need to be able to get in touch.
It's like your college football rivalry, or GOP / Dem, or whatever us v. them you're into these days. I suppose we're wired emotionally for such things. And there's nothing like emotion to get clicks!
But it's not just men. When I was very young, before I could swim, I fell into a pool and my grandmother dove in and saved me. She was like a bolt of lightening. I don't have many memories of being young. But I sure do remember that one.

Anyway, the site is pretty cool because it opens my mind up to new ideas. But I had a lot of suggested outfits that were the same color of different pieces (no contrast as you said) and multiple jackets.
Wonder if it "learns" my style over time? I'd like to see this continue to grow. And maybe instead of the schedule feature, it could give me links to buy. I imagine monetization isn't far off if there's decent traffic.
Is there a law for that? Or is it an offshoot of the Streisand Effect?
But power corrupts. And honestly, it all sounds so idealistic now. It has become painfully obvious that the companies will not self-regulate. We've got to do something.
Nowadays I just don't have that time. And the bad guys have evolved from mischievous to felonious (and I have a lot more to lose. I still harp on privacy and security, but now I do it behind a couple of walled gardens. I love that my devices "just work."
I know it's a trade off, and I'm certainly fighting for more regulations of FAANG. And I am supporting the FOSS/open device movement, and look forward to the next phase where those "just work".
I totally agree. I think that we as a nation (US) (and possibly all over world) have a blind spot where social media, surveillance capitalism, and targeted ads are. The power of the algorithm is so strong that people truly believe they’re being recorded (the whole FB is listening because I got such and such ad).
Policy is always many years behind technology. My biggest concern is that this technology poses an existential threat to our current zeitgeist (?). I always trouble putting the threat into my own words.
But I can’t agree more. We need immediate transparency. And we need to study the cause and effect so we can better understand. That will lead to the best form of whatever regulation we may need to move to the next stage.
My job is part of my dream, but not all of it. I am currently building the other part, where I have equity in something that is growing everyday.
I hear people talk about how great high school was, or how much they loved college or their 20's. For me, each decade is better than the last as long as I'm still learning, growing, and building.
I'm also experiencing the crashes you mentioned - fine one minute and crawling back in bed the next. It's usually in the afternoons or evenings. But as you say, it's much better than before when I slept ALL DAY for several days.
To end on a brighter note, I am back to exercising 45 mins, 3 days a week. And I go biking weekends, for 1.5 - 2 hours. My stamina isn't what it was, but it's building back. I even decided to go ahead with a (virtual) race I signed up for. I'll walk/run with the only goal of finishing.
Anyway I wish I had a solution other than "delete the account and don't look back," but I don't. I will say that life goes on and those people in your life that really care will find a way to communicate with you. And the ones that don't? I don't miss them at all, really.
I will say that this is true more for entrepreneurs that for Corporate America. I had many successful years as an independent consultant where being likeable was more profitable than being most other things. But I learned when I took the corporate job that it really seems like assholes get ahead more than anyone else. Or as I say, "the biggest bully wins." (Unfortunately, I am not a very good bully.)
I hate to sound dramatic here, but this man's life could be in danger. With issues like this, odds are at some point in his life, he could either overdose (if drugs are involved), suicide, or be a victim of a serious / violent crime. Those things happen to folks in these situations, especially if he wears out his welcome suddenly and ends up back on the street.
My suggestion to you is to put EVERYTHING on the back-burner, and get this man some help. The catch here is that he may not want help, and as much as I hate to be "that guy," he may not be able to get better until he wants it. It sounds like he's smart enough to understand that his erratic behavior might threaten his job, and you want to help him get his behavior under control.
Some people need much, MUCH more than a steady job and a roof over their head. Long term success and balance will only come after the ROOT causes are addressed. Mental health professionals can usually help with this, if the person is willing.
Edited to change the last sentence to be less certain and include stipulations.
Sometimes I blame greedy computer repair people of the 90's and early 2000's for this mess. I remember my friend opened up a repair shop (I helped weekends as a side gig). There were companies in our town charging OUTRAGEOUS prices for very easy repairs, and doing a really bad job. Then we would end up fixing the "repair" and then the original problem, which of course was always more than the original problem. It was really sad.
Now I live in a town with NO computer repair shops, and the closest thing is the Best Buy which is the KING of overcharging for repairs and doing a crappy job.
It's no wonder people just started buying cheap computers after being ripped off.

I'm doing my best here to make my point without flaming other cultures. We as Americans get blamed a whole lot when things go bad. I think this writer is engaging in lazy projection. Stop buying the crap and you'll stop seeing the crap. (I don't like this piece, if you can't tell.)
I'm a big believer in buying quality stuff and repairing it when it breaks. I try to do my part to NOT buy the junk. But this fake history lesson in how all this garbage is the fault of American's is just low-rate in my opinion.
I hate to be that guy that quotes the dictionary, but let's start with dictionary.com[0]: Violence (noun): - swift and intense force: the violence of a storm. - rough or injurious physical force, action, or treatment: to die by violence. - an unjust or unwarranted exertion of force or power, as against rights or laws: to take over a government by violence.
Now, Wikipedia [1]: Violence is "the use of physical force so as to injure, abuse, damage, or destroy". Less conventional definitions are also used, such as the World Health Organization's definition of violence as "the intentional use of physical force or power, threatened or actual, against oneself, another person, or against a group or community, which either results in or has a high likelihood of resulting in injury, death, psychological harm, maldevelopment, or deprivation."
What about domestic abuse violence that doesn't even involve physical abuse? From WebMD [2]: Domestic abuse is more than just hitting, shoving, and other physical attacks. It’s a pattern of controlling behaviors. The goal always is to get and keep power over an intimate partner.
To be clear, I'm not comparing these riots to domestic violence. What I'm trying to do is debunk this argument that somehow because these rioters aren't hurting anyone that they're not committing acts of violence. These acts of destruction are very much acts of violence. Words are important and the truth matters. Let's call this what it is, violence and destruction. Just because people might not be being targeted doesn't mean that they aren't getting hurt and traumatized. And yes, this is violence.

(Edit: forgot my references, and changed "Webster's" to "Dictionary.com"
And right now for example we have federal troops "deploying" in several US metropolis areas to "combat gun violence." When obviously we should be deploying public policy experts and mental health professionals.
And yes, the working poor and the shrinking middle class are being left behind in this huge tech rally that's making billionaires out of millionaires. There are no leaders anymore, only con men and managers and stuckees.
I have no idea what my point is, other than to express my frustration with the state of politics and public policy these days. ALL of our political choices are CLOWNS.
