zgs··on We've already seen category 6 hurricanes – scientists want to make it official
I'm skeptical about one of the opening sentences in the article: "category 5 underestimates actual risk".

Category 5 cyclones/hurricanes are already assumed to essentially destroy everything in their path. This will still be true regardless of how strong the winds get.

Having experienced several lower category cyclones, there really isn't a lot to do except 1/ evacuate if you've got time and a place to go or 2/ bunker down and pray. It's just luck that I've not experienced a direct hit from a higher category storm.

zgs··on Is modern food lower in nutrients?
The obvious take out is that big pharma wants to sell you nutritional supplements...

More realistically, we've been breeding our crops to produce more without regards to the nutritional content being produced. More will always involve a trade off.

zgs··on US Union Membership Dips to Record Low Despite High-Profile Wins
With compulsory union membership, things are generally okay for the working class and bit less so for the business owners.

With optional membership, those outside the union can be given better deals to encourage union members to quit. Once enough quit, the conditions can be eroded. Not improving non-union conditions is the best way to erode since the slaves don't realise they are being hurt. This is good for the business owners and marginal to bad for the workers.

Without a union, you get a subservient slave class. Great for the business owners and rubbish for the workers.

zgs··on Ubisoft Wants You to Be Comfortable Not Owning Your Games
No more Ubisoft for me. Problem solved.
zgs··on Elon Musk's Algorithm; Business Lessons Can We Learn from Tesla's Enigmatic CEO?
Be a media whore and get lots of other people's money to fund your crazy ideas. One or two might be a success and justify your existence.

It also helps to start out with a lot of money so you can make unimaginable amounts.

zgs··on OpenAI says it's "impossible" to create AI models without copyrighted material
Bollocks. There is lots of out of copyright content available. It just requires a person in the loop to assess the status.

If it truely were impossible, then it sounds like they've just admitted that they should have licensed the content rather than using it without permission.

zgs··on Why Is There a 'Strand of DNA' on Massachusetts License Plates?
It's clearly to highlight the fact that road fatalities are pushing evolution forwards.

Very forward thinking.

zgs··on The Big One: Preparing for a Long War Between the U.S. and China
https://english.news.cn/20220902/735703a45cfd458791179d4c0a8... - 201 wars started by the USA since world war 2 finished. That's only until 2001, there are many more since. Okay that's from a China based news service (which I honestly believe far more and the incompetent and biassed USA news services).

Wikipedia suggests quite a few less: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_wars_involving_the_Uni... but still a lot.

I believe (but haven't checked) that the USA has started at least one war every year since 1945. This was true in the mid 2000s, it might not be now.

That you managed 3 (or at a push 4) versus a hundred or so is a great comparison in favour of my comment: China does NOT want a war. It's bad for business.

zgs··on The Big One: Preparing for a Long War Between the U.S. and China
This is written from a very USA based ideology. Unlike the USA, China doesn't have a long track record of starting wars. China is unlikely to attack anyone, but clearly cannot rule out the possibility that they might and could.

China takes a longer and less forceful approach: political and economic control are their preferred choices by far.

Wars do not benefit anyone bar the arms manufacturers for the most part.

zgs··on Show HN: Visualize rotating objects from the 4th, 5th, nth dimensions

zgs··on Is OpenBSD Secure? (2019)
In a word: "no".

Back when I worked at AusCERT, there was a really nasty remote exploit discovered in OpenBSD. It was responsibly passed on to the OpenBSD folks who fixed it in a timely manner. However, because the exploit was never officially made public, they refused to publicly admit that it even existed or was ever a problem. Their remote exploit counter remained suspiciously unchanged -- it ought to have incremented.

While I do believe that they are doing their best and are far beyond the norm, I have little doubt that other "non-issues" have appeared over time.

zgs··on How do I become a 3D printer power user? (the which CAD question)

zgs··on Most 2 digit numbers not divisible by 2, 3, or 5 are prime
This is really obvious. All two digits composite numbers must have a factor less than or equal to their square root. Square root of 100 is 10. Thus all composite numbers under 100 must have a factor under 10. There are only four primes less than 10: 2, 3, 5 and 7.

Once you exclude all numbers divisible by 2, 3 and 5 these are the composite numbers left: 49, 77, 91.

zgs··on Chrome's next weapon in the War on Ad Blockers: Slower extension updates
Looks like Chrome is digging a hole they'll not get out of.

I run Chrome as little as possible. Sadly, there are a few places where it is the best still.

zgs··on The case for never reading the book jacket
The inside front cover blurb for Bored of the Rings is quite entertaining and bears no resemblance to the contents in the slightest. By not reading the jacket, you'd miss this little gem.

“Do you like what you doth see . . . ?” said the voluptuous elf-maiden as she provocatively parted the folds of her robe to reveal the rounded, shadowy glories within. Frito’s throat was dry, though his head reeled with desire and ale. She slipped off the flimsy garment and strode toward the fascinated boggie unashamed of her nakedness. She ran a perfect hand along his hairy toes, and he helplessly watched them curl with the fierce insistent wanting of her. “Let me make thee more comfortable,” she whispered hoarsely, fiddling with the clasps of his jerkin, loosening his sword belt with a laugh. “Touch me, oh touch me,” she crooned. Frito’s hand, as though of its own will, reached out and traced the delicate swelling of her elf-breast, while the other slowly crept around her tiny, flawless waist, crushing her to his barrel chest. “Toes, I love hairy toes,” she moaned, forcing him down on the silvered carpet. Her tiny, pink toes caressed the luxuriant fur of his instep while Frito’s nose sought out the warmth of her precious elf-navel. “But I’m so small and hairy, and . . . and you’re so beautiful,” Frito whimpered, slipping clumsily out of his crossed garters. The elf-maiden said nothing, but only sighed deep in her throat and held him more firmly to her faunlike body. “There is one thing you must do for me first,” she whispered into one tufted ear. “Anything,” sobbed Frito, growing frantic with his need. “Anything!” She closed her eyes and then opened them to the ceiling. “The Ring,” she said. “I must have your Ring.” Frito’s whole body tensed. “Oh no,” he cried, “not that! Anything but . . . that.” “I must have it,” she said both tenderly and fiercely. “I must have the Ring!” Frito’s eyes blurred with tears and confusion. “I can’t,” he said. “I mustn’t!” But he knew resolve was no longer strong in him. Slowly, the elf-maiden’s hand inched toward the chain in his vest pocket, closer and closer it came to the Ring Frito had guarded so faithfully . .”

zgs··on Too much stuff: can we solve our addiction to consumerism?
No?!
zgs··on Ask HN: How do I Convince someone the Earth isn't flat
Ignore their idiocy. Such folks cannot be convinced by mere facts.
zgs··on [dead]
Why? China is not interested in fighting a war with anyone. That's the American rather than the Chinese way.

The Chinese achieve their goals over decades and generations.

zgs··on How many jacaranda trees are there in Sydney?
Sadly, they aren't considered noxious enough to mandate their removal. Having pretty blossoms seems to help avoid the classification.
zgs··on Albert Einstein in 1939 composed a message for the people of AD 6939
I'm sure cockroaches will enjoy eating the microfilm when the capsule opens.
zgs··on Modern Linux Tools vs. Unix Classics: Which Would I Choose?
The title should read modern GNU tools. Linux is a kernel and supplies nothing useful for command line lovers.

Nonetheless, the more modern tools are generally better, faster and more feature rich. I'd pick them over the older versions unless there was a compelling reason not to.

Yes, I've used both. For almost forty years now.

zgs··on US Government may require open source software to use memory safe languages
Ha ha ha.

Plenty of OSS is created outside the USA. Good luck applying any such mandates.

zgs··on Norway Fining Meta $98,500 per Day for User Privacy Breach
$30 million per annum wouldn't even represent a bump against their revenue. Until the fines are revenue based, it's not going to matter.
zgs··on US unions have flexed their muscle this past year. Are they winning?
Most other countries had this fight decades or a century ago.

A living wage and reasonable benefits is more than just compensation for a week's work.

zgs··on Ruby Outperforms C: Breaking the Catch-22
Seriously??

Outperforming optimised C is basically impossible for any JIT.

Theoretically, a JIT can do better because it can know more specifics but in practice it just doesn't happen.

zgs··on Ask HN: Why did Python win?
In what way is Python a titan? It's a nice enough language & I've done real world projects in it.

Lua is simpler and, with LuaJit, much faster and far more C compatible.

C is still very widely used and generally comes above Python in the "best" language lists.

zgs··on Securing Firmware Updates with AES Encryption
Be careful following this advice. There are several issues with the suggested approach. The result is that it's nothing more than a layer of obscurity. As usual: "don't roll your own cryptography".

AES-CTR isn't ideal, a bit flip in the ciphertext flips the corresponding bit in the plaintext when decrypted. I.e. the image is mutable. The solution is to authenticate the data in a cryptographically secure manner. The article suggests using a CRC which is always trivial to circumvent.

A second issue is where to store the AES key. A mention is made of doing this in a secure manner on the device (which is good) but it must be in a form which doesn't allow access by an attacker -- either directly or via a side channel.

Instead of trying to create something, use TLS which will get the data to the device in a secure manner.

zgs··on Ask HN: How do I stop my iPhone addiction?
The obvious solution is get get an Android phone. It won't help much but it sure will annoy you with the the myriad differences.

Better still, see if you can pick up an old Nokia 3310 second hand. It works fine as a phone, can do text messages and even has a couple of low quality games.

The solution to your problem is to get rid of the phone. It seems like your self control isn't sufficient in of its self to break the addiction (and it is an addiction).

zgs··on [dead]
To be worthwhile, the fight should be to the death.

No amount of money wagered would impact either of them.

They'd have to travel to a suitable location but some still exist: https://www.wearethemighty.com/popular/5-places-where-duelin...

zgs··on Intravenous Caffeine
A guy I know once suggested a wet suit and a caffeinated bath.

By the time you release you've had too much, you're not even halfway there.
