zero_intp··on Facebook now denying access unless EU users opt-in to tracking
it is extremely possible to sign away one's free speech; this is the heart of a non-disclosure agreement.
zero_intp··on Amazon threatens to suspend Signal's AWS account over censorship circumvention
I think it is disingenuous to say that countries are judged by persons and other nations by GDP alone.
zero_intp··on Hijack of Amazon’s domain service used to reroute web traffic for two hours
Starting in 2000, yes.
zero_intp··on Jan Koum to leave after broad clashes with Facebook
This is my experience as well.
zero_intp··on Jan Koum to leave after broad clashes with Facebook
This is the truth, FB is being fined by EU regulators for dissembling.
zero_intp··on Jan Koum to leave after broad clashes with Facebook
signal?
zero_intp··on Jan Koum to leave after broad clashes with Facebook
Pardon my skepticism, but Microsoft has most definitely advertised to the TLAs that Skype communications are available for review.
zero_intp··on Hijack of Amazon’s domain service used to reroute web traffic for two hours
This comment is only partially true, the realities of managing customers on routers with thousands of routes precludes this careful management at the rock bottom tier-1 transit prices of the lowest common demoninators. The way HE & Cogent operate for large web-hosters at data centers is by trust and prefix-counts. The churn of various web-operators between hosting companies is massive.
zero_intp··on Southwest 1380: think about the flight attendants
Rando from the internet thinks OP is right on target.
zero_intp··on The latest trend for tech interviews: Days of unpaid homework
Very well thought out rebuttal. I live in the convergence between telecom/network engineering and code, and I definitely see the disparity that you describe.
zero_intp··on The latest trend for tech interviews: Days of unpaid homework
Thank you for an excellent write up of the duties of a hiring manager.
zero_intp··on The latest trend for tech interviews: Days of unpaid homework
For contractors in properties I own I do this, but the initial work is paid.
zero_intp··on Widescreen laptops are dumb
Users who state others use cases as irrelevant are dumb.

As a router jockey, I use widescreen (laptops) for multiple terminal sessions, iterm2 with 4 or 6 80x40 cli windows.

zero_intp··on Just one QUIC bit
Assume there are a minimum of three network operators involved in every flow; source, destination, and transport. It is highly likely that either the source or destination operator will have opportunity and motive to do said inspection/detection.
zero_intp··on Apple Maps vs. Google Maps vs. Waze
Google Now, despite it's abandonware status, solves this use case by telling me when my commute has an incident.
zero_intp··on JMESPath – A query language for JSON
I use jq on simple projects and to prototype. It is lightweight, fast, and usually consistent in operation.
zero_intp··on JMESPath – A query language for JSON
Thanks for taking the time to write this tool. Can you explain how it is distinguished from jq?
zero_intp··on U.S. consumer protection official puts Equifax probe on ice
Good luck with that, the Democratic party has not suddenly grown a spine.
zero_intp··on Mayor quits FCC committee, says it favors ISPs over the public interest
I am an architect at one of the companies that has a representative on this committee. When I have brought up discussions of localized broadband public partnerships I have been mercilessly shut down. Capex is a limited commodity, but so is qualified legal and engineering resources. The short and medium returns on investing our growth capabilities on limited return partnerships is insufficient to warrant the effort.
zero_intp··on Do we really need a new BGP?
As an NSP architect I can tell you the hardest resource to procure is experienced talent that can operate a production network without trying to move fast and break things.

Buying hardware with usable software is pretty critical when dealing with stateful services.

zero_intp··on Start Your Own ISP
yes.
zero_intp··on Do we really need a new BGP?
costs, costs, costs. As your IP service becomes commoditized fewer, not more, engineers make bigger changes. Interestingly, expert systems reduce, not improve, the quality of the operating engineers: http://journals.sagepub.com/doi/full/10.1177/000183921775169...
zero_intp··on Do we really need a new BGP?
Network Operators dislike buying new hardware. As the policies matriculate through tiers of providers, raw numbers of announced prefixes becomes a sticking point.
zero_intp··on Do we really need a new BGP?
Operator and designer mistakes happen, the goals should be to make simple systems easy to build. Complex networks will need thoughtful solutions, and better designs will have fewer operator interventions.

I could be petty and pick apart the article for mistakes, but I agree with the gist- If you compose your needs and environment and use the right design you might not hate the protocol(s) you end up with?

zero_intp··on Bitcoin Can Drop 50% and China Miners Will Still Make Money
Hello poster, it would help to add to your comment. Without additional detail it seems like whataboutism.
zero_intp··on ‘It Can’t Be True’ – Inside the Semiconductor Industry’s Meltdown
I disagree with you. Labeling fallacies is shorthand for calling them out. When reading PR or news, I prefer to read a quick breakdown of the syllogisms BEFORE I go into technical details.
zero_intp··on Magic Leap House of Cards – FSD, Waveguides, and Focus Planes
The author of the post is trying to prove the negative, that ML can not succeed because GP can not reconcile a successful solution from the the disclosed technologies, or that one does not exist. This may be true, but can not be proven.

zero_intp··on So Close
People are less pissing on the grave of the failed attempt than pissing on the feet of a seemingly delusional or irresponsible founder. The medium post fails at any semblance of self-awareness.
zero_intp··on The Long-Term Stock Exchange Comes to Life
Hi Walter, this line of questions is not going to lead to a proof of your position. The S&P index removes failures, so your question fails to address survivor bias. Also, you argue the perfect over the good as a reason for status quo.
