zerd··on Hyperspace
You can do the same with `cp -c` on macOS, or `cp --reflink=always` on Linux, if your filesystem supports it.
zerd··on Hyperspace
.terraform, rust target directory, node_modules.
zerd··on "A computer can never be held accountable"
The old system was horrible though, you had to sue to get compensation, and could get sued for a fender-bender. The old system was _great_ for lawyers.
zerd··on SmolGPT: A minimal PyTorch implementation for training a small LLM from scratch
The one you linked to is based on Karpathy's tutorial: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kCc8FmEb1nY, except changing to train on tinystories in stead of Shakespeare. smolGPT also looks inspired by nanoGPT, also from Karpathy: https://github.com/karpathy/nanoGPT/blob/master/train.py

Because when they increase their prices too much, they lose the customers, which loses money. Why would a for-profit company want to lose money?
zerd··on Datadog acquires Quickwit
The architecture of Husky seems fairly similar to quickwit. https://www.datadoghq.com/blog/engineering/introducing-husky... https://quickwit.io/docs/main-branch/overview/architecture

zerd··on Forced to upgrade
How does that impact software support lifetime?
zerd··on Speeding up the Rust edit-build-run cycle
This post is from February, any interesting changes/improvements since then? Progress on “wild”?
zerd··on Touchscreens are out, and tactile controls are back
My car has buttons and a big enough screen for back up camera.

zerd··on Bop Spotter
https://www.dictionary.com/e/slang/turn-down-for-what/

> At its core, turn down for what is a phrase used to promote having a good time. The phrase itself implies that there is no reason to turn down and stop partying.

zerd··on Hacking Kia: Remotely controlling cars with just a license plate
Just wait, next they'll ban USB cables.
zerd··on Is Tor still safe to use?
They are pretty essential, without them you can only access onion services.
zerd··on Ask HN: What is the best code base you ever worked on?
If you have a reusable component in a separate repository and need a change, you have to submit that, merge, release, then bump the version in the downstream project to use it. Then if someone else uses the project updates but hits an issue that you introduced they have to go fix it, perhaps a month later, with no context of what changed. Or they just don’t upgrade the version, and reimplement what they need. With a monorepo it would be one change, and your change breaking someone else’s would get flagged and fixed with the code change. I’ve seen the amount of shared code get less and less and more stale with polyrepo.
zerd··on AI headphones let wearer listen to a single person in a crowd by looking at them
According to https://www.etymonline.com/word/dampen it's meant "to dull or deaden, make weak" from 1630s and "to moisten, make humid" from 1827.
zerd··on Chrome Feature: ZSTD Content-Encoding
I recommend the CoRecursive episode about how LZ4 and zstd came to be. It started with making games for a HP calculator. https://corecursive.com/data-compression-yann-collet/
zerd··on The Wi-Fi only works when it's raining
The podcast that kills the car stereo episode of Reply All is pretty funny https://gimletmedia.com/amp/shows/reply-all/brh8jm
zerd··on The Ladybird browser project
I learned about the project from the co-recursive podcast episode. Fascinating story. https://corecursive.com/serenity-os-with-andreas-kling/

zerd··on Converting the Kernel to C++
> What is the pattern for converting C to Rust piecemeal?

You can call Rust from C, and C from rust. You can convert it function by function.

zerd··on Mindustry: Open-source automation tower defense game
I noticed e.g. Cyberduck do the same. It's open source software, you can download it on the website for free. But if you want to have it one click on the App store it's $24.

They switched from GPL in 2016: https://dev.aseprite.org/2016/09/01/new-source-code-license/
zerd··on VW is putting buttons back in cars
You've never needed to change the temperature while driving? Or turn on/off heated seats? Or adjust fan speed? Or turn on recirculating air?
zerd··on Krita AI Diffusion
> Weird how OpenAI got all the credit when it was Stable Diffusion that first opened the gates.

Stable Diffusion came out much later than DALL-E by OpenAI, so I'd say they deserve some credit.

zerd··on FCC launches inquiry to increase minimum broadband speed [pdf]
If I take a video on my phone and sync it to the cloud that's easily more than that. And if that takes up the whole 10 Mbit, video calls get unusable.
zerd··on Log is the "Pro" in iPhone 15 Pro
I was trying to take a passport photo, and one of the requirements is "has not been touched up". But when I took the photo with my phone, I noticed that it had been very helpful in touching up my face by removing almost all of my wrinkles and made my skin nice and soft. Even with all "enhancements" off. This was on an Samsung S10, I tried with an iPhone SE, it was slightly less visibly touched up, so I used that, but still definitely had a "beauty" filter built in. It's probably implemented in ASIC so you basically can't turn it fully off.
zerd··on Shrinkflation Tracker
I've been buying the exact same pair of boxers for years. This year I noticed that they were actually smaller, by almost an inch. Elastic band is smaller and the actual length, so it started chafing. Shrinkflation even on clothes.
zerd··on WiFi can read through walls
The page, paper and video say that as well. The difference here is that this is tracing still objects.
zerd··on A surprisingly simple way to foil car thieves
A friend had a car that required that you hold a magnet at a very specific spot in the back of the arm rest to be able to start ignition. Don't think he ever tried to valet that.
