zepppotemkin··on Meta to start capturing employee mouse movements, keystrokes for AI training
It's kind of funny to see how people here are reacting to the world they built when it finally comes to them
zepppotemkin··on Not buying another Kindle
Among other things, if you become logged out of the device or it's reset you will no longer be able to login with an amazon account ( which is required ) to use the device
zepppotemkin··on Stripe laying off around 14% of workforce
I had some rough spots in 2008-2010 a good 3-4 month or so gap in steady employment and what I did get afterwards wasn't great but it was ok

I learned the importance of saving during the good times so I'm less worried now

but it would be foolish to pretend the growth of many was stunted during bad times

zepppotemkin··on TomTom’s new mapping platform and ecosystem
Yeah, in Chicago at least google maps tends to go into a panic attack, it's distracting and has nearly caused me a few accidents
zepppotemkin··on Tell HN: The issues of Twitter are not a technical problem to solve

Just from seeing what people watch while on the train these days I'd say it is, I get that it's not the best indicator
zepppotemkin··on How much have tech layoffs affected engineers vs. other departments?
nope it's 100% the boomers up to their usual antics /s

zepppotemkin··on Former NSA Employee Arrested on Espionage-Related Charges
yeah, lying and trust are much more serious
zepppotemkin··on Google is shutting down Stadia
Honestly they just didn't have any content due to their technology choices, I use GFN all the time because it has most of the games I want to play already

they put themselves in a position where they were stuck acting like a psudo-console-platform thing needing to get developers to support thier platform

zepppotemkin··on Google is shutting down Stadia
They are still pulling off big projects and pivoting well though though steam proton/steamdeck which pivoted from the initial failures of the steambox push

they may not really be in the AAA game business as much but I'm not sure that's a bad thing

zepppotemkin··on Google is shutting down Stadia
Eh, most people want to work for Google for the cash these days it's reflected in their hiring where they don't even know where they want to place people half the time
zepppotemkin··on Google is shutting down Stadia
Or just offer steam keys
zepppotemkin··on Google is shutting down Stadia
Get wrecked Google
zepppotemkin··on Did Neanderthals make art?
Serious question, why do we can about human art when we've got things like stable diffusion now? retro value?
zepppotemkin··on Crazy Thin ‘Deep Insert’ ATM Skimmers
that's one of the pirmary things for me too even as a guy with usually large pockets i find it annoying to walk around with them in my pocket espcially in the summer

plus on the bus or train I usually use a book or my kindle so it's easy to forget the phone

zepppotemkin··on Ask HN: How does your company handle late running projects?
> CTO dropped the entire backend because it wasn't in the language he liked)

yeesh

zepppotemkin··on Ask HN: How does your company handle late running projects?
I do my best during working hours and if it fails it fails -- the actual source of the problem can take the blame

zepppotemkin··on Crazy Thin ‘Deep Insert’ ATM Skimmers
personally I hate the idea of always needing a phone with me -- i leave mine at home most of the time just using my wallet and nfc transit card to get around
zepppotemkin··on U.S. life expectancy drops sharply, the second consecutive decline
everything's possible it's hard for me to imagine how it would work in some sprawling places like texas eg. houston or austin

I could that happening new/growing suburbs outside of cities like that though like as you say if they commit to a sane design/zoning before it's to late

zepppotemkin··on U.S. life expectancy drops sharply, the second consecutive decline
That would be nice but I don't see that happening outside of boutique cities like bentonville

you really need to start fresh or force it before hitting the inflection point

zepppotemkin··on Will California Eliminate Anonymous Web Browsing? (Comments on CA AB 2273)
Where is the need to do that specified in the actual bill? https://leginfo.legislature.ca.gov/faces/billTextClient.xhtm...

the majority of the bill is restrictions on collecting personal information in general

I'm not sure most ecommerce sites would meet the criteria as something marketed and targeted at children

I agree that 'likely visited by children' is nebulous but this seems to be heavily aimed at live streaming/recording services(twitch, tiktok .. etc), large public social forums (discord) and things like youtube kids

zepppotemkin··on Will California Eliminate Anonymous Web Browsing? (Comments on CA AB 2273)
reading the bill it seems fairly pro-privacy and generally contains things I'd imagine most folks want like limitations on collection childrens data, notifications if you're use is being monitored and controls over how childrens information is stored
