It's interesting that a second article from this site has made it to the HN front page. I've been digging into this concept a lot since the first article was linked from here.

I think traditional, walkable cities are a great idea whose time is more than overdue in North America. Places like Quebec City are a good example, but what really fascinates me is Tokyo, a behemoth of a city with so much that is walkable with one-way streets and wide sidewalk areas, and you can get to anywhere easily via buses and rail links. All these simple one-way streets, connecting to arterial roads with 1 lane in each direction, connecting to highways, create an absolutely massively distributed road system.

If you think i'm exaggerating, pull up Tokyo in Google Maps and pick a spot at random in the surrounding metro area and go to Street View, you will always always land on a one-way road, often with people walking on it.

The term "over-engineering" comes to mind when arguing self-driving cars vs walking. Also, cars keep us lazy and fat.

It works fine in a bunch of the rest of the world.

Unless you sleepwalk, or are a 'flailer' there's little risk to sleeping with an infant in bed with you.

Idea for testing it out:

get a cabbage patch doll, hard boil an egg and shell it, put the egg in a clear ziplock bag, and tape the bag to doll. Check if it's squished in the morning. You may need multiple eggs on different limbs, maybe multiple eggs per bag, to account for the full size of the doll.

I can't tell if that's sarcasm or not, but after having acquired a lot of that stuff, I can tell you it's highly overrated (maybe not the vacations)

I actually found the earlier chapters interesting, but the whole Battle Magic arc rather tedious

I don't think that's a fair analysis of the characters as the story progresses (except maybe for Ron, but who likes Ron anyway?) How far into HPMOR did you get?

Older UIs like the Amiga OS one suffered from an even more limited pallet, and even worse typography.

I used BeOS as my main OS for a while and really liked it - it was very snappy and felt more "homey" (that is, more like classic MacOS) than early OSX versions did. (The browser, NetPositive, was absolutely awful though).

A lot of it is flat, but they use simple bevels for buttons and other clickable elements, and its reuse on, for example, the buttons in the file manager window, looks tacky because it appears cluttered and overused. Also, excessive lines (e.g. for the window borders), high contrast colors, and small color pallet makes the overall appearance not nice to look at. Also the icon set suuuuucked.

Since the Aqua look came out in OS X, there have been a lot of imitations used on webpages, knock-off UIs, etc. which tended to look terrible, in part because it's hard to do them tastefully. At least flat UIs are harder to mess up.

Edit: as a note, some people are concerned about losing lanes, but if the lanes are (almost) always moving, and there is no redundant middle left-turn lane, you don't need as many lanes, freeing up the space for sidewalks and bike paths.

You still have to build and maintain power plants for extracting energy from other sources (coal, hydro, etc), which have huge additional costs.

That's the sort of high school experience and college experience I had, where the college experience was much more conducive to really understanding the material.

My sister-in-law is in high school, at a school that has fewer courses per term, and fewer per day, and going more in-depth in each class; I'm really glad she gets that experience.
