zentr1c··on Ask HN: If you were rewriting Emacs from scratch, what would you do differently?
>Get rid of any keybinding or UI convention that is there because that is the way they did it the AI Lab in 1967. Make the UI as familiar to the average computer user as possible (but keep the general design of a large rectangle of text) by using mainstream conventions (which come mainly from the Mac and Windows) for how to respond to this or that keypress or to clicking or dragging with this or that mouse button.

zentr1c··on Ask HN: Do you recall any book or course that made a topic finally click?
the point is that both perspectives are important and helpfull. you shouldnt ignore either side. however destructive behavior can evolve from both.

I choose atheism when 16 and rediscovered religion at 35. How? whats the difference between a religion and believing in atheism, psychology, social science? in this sense i overcame atheism and started looking at the interesting concepts of religions, introduced geografically and sequentially in time. naturally i decided to dig deeper in my cultures religion at hand instead of idealising the grass is greener far away. my conclusion is that sciences and religions is just a approach to understand and model the world. it would be stupid to ignore the knowledge embeeded in both and there are wrong conclusions embedded that are not easy to identify in both. maybe it seems easier to identify them with! science but still social "science" nowadays seems to me not much more like a new cult trying new approaches challenging thousand year old cults and knowledge embedded in their religion. Like a kid who challenges the parents. In the end it's a natural selection process that will decide what knowledge / models survive through time. Isn't it a beautiful creation process. No need to condemn either approach. The Bible teaches, you shouldnt use gods name in vain. Exodus 20:7. Isnt it true for science, too?

i feel you bro. its easy to understand other peoples point of view and at the same time seeing what their viewpoint misses. again beeing aware that myself is limited too. it thought me beeing empathic with everybody but beeing able to say not my point of view. i guess its called becoming wise. since its a pattern of aging which you can do ofcause with different style, i recommend reading into anthroposophical-biography-work to understand the patterns of human morphing thru life. I am happy that I was blessed to learn about it. Now over 50 I still can recommend digging into it. Best age is around mid 30 to grasp what's ahead. E.g.

zentr1c··on Show HN: LambdaLisp – A Lisp interpreter that runs on lambda calculus
Maybe I am stupid but what's the point in reimplementing lisp in lambda? Just to prove how beautiful simple lambda calculus is? The lambda functionality is allready in lisp. And lisp is beautiful simple!

() is nothing and (is something) What does the implementation show more beautiful than that?

zentr1c··on Alexei Navalny reportedly moved to high-security prison in Russia
What's the point? US and UK keep Julian Assange in one, too. Moral superiority of the west was lost back then. This loss of trust in democracy is hard to reverse.if someone challenges the narrative to much, there is not much difference in treating political prisoners between east and west.you will be hunted down and screwed. Guantanamo still exists by the way. Europe keeps silent.

Evolution will tell what the right choice was. I am having popcorn while watching the extremists battle each others position.

zentr1c··on Ask HN: How important is ontology engineering today?
I feel its current approaches (owl rdf etc...) are stuck somehow and there is something like a ontology Winter. Its not dead but the solutions out there do not scale well. I believe something like the gellish language approach must be developed towards a open standard and there needs to exist something like a decentralized registry of ontologies and dictionaries. Maybe like DNS.

zentr1c··on Ask HN: I'm So Lonely
Been through the same cycle as OP.Its painful and sucks. Still after 15 years . I am over 50 now. Kid grown up.

Dealing with the lonliness from the kids was the toughest. If you cant get along with the mum. Accept it and leave the kids behind in love. Maybe write every now and then dont blame yourself. If you get along well you should keep in touch with them. Otherwise it will drain you and them of so much energy that in the end nobody has a chance to become happy. And to become happy is what you should prioritize on. Otherwise your kids wont learn how to deal positivly when they are ready to see you again.

On lonlines: A very positive strategy for me was that I opened my self again as a spiritual being after being atheist for most of my life. I was lucky to find a church community that I liked. Its is also a place where you have a chance to socialize with all ages not only your age or interest group democraphic. This helps to broaden your social skills. I recommend attentending a service where they sometimes socialize afterwards (Brunch together, discuss or have Coffee together). I found it extremly valuable to connect with older folks and talk about their perception of loneliness and life. Also christians teach to talk to god. So in the end your not alone anyway, somehow. Just try out some services and communities till you find one that you feel welcome and positiv. Open up to singing and worship without judging yourself beeing unauthentic. There are lines in the songs you can connect and others you cant. This can really free blocks and helps to become less judgmental on yourself and others. Ofcause beware of sects that just want money. On the other hand look at it like it is a service you pay for. Like gym, shrinks, alcohol etc. It might be the cheaper option.

Regarding women and other releationships... 1. Accept and learn to understand your needs and preferences. Stop blaming yourself. It's all part of the experience. You are ok. And dont bend yourself to satisfy others but learn from others. 2. Learn the game. There are some rules. Most important is 1. There is great literature about it. Must reads are from David Schnarch.

Enjoy the ride there is a lot to discover. To force yourself into "learning to be lonly" postpone it to after death.

Good luck.

zentr1c··on The Windows 11 taskbar is an annoying step backward
Ranting in Gibbons:)

Still i wonder how much it effects my productivity decline in Office since i still search sometimes for functionality. In anyway it made me hate office and made Switch to open Office wherever i can. However I attribute it to having kicked of my quest for a plaintext workflow because beeing f*ked over by feature bloat and Designer circle jerking once to many times.

Simplicity is king. Maybe its just the age that makes me realize that there are just to many layers of complexity.

I feel for the young learners that get thrown into this world and dont even understand the concept of a file system tree anymore. It has been abstracted away. it's not in the cloud! It's in the app with 3 klicks reachable or doesn't exist.

Definitly. Best soltion i have seen to track it is some kind of Matrix where Y: tasks worked on X: das of month Cell contains spent time Below x is the sum of each day

However with over 100 tasks per month it gets complicated
