zelcon··on Free software hasn't won
Why would anyone want free software to win? Dont most of us here draw an income from software that’s explicitly not free?

Look at what they need to mimic a fraction of our power (TRAMP)
zelcon··on How to Run DeepSeek R1 671B Locally on a $2000 EPYC Server
That's a shame. I suppose you'll need 4 of them with RDMA to run a 671B, but somehow that seems better to me than trying to run it on DDR4 RAM like the OP is saying. I have a system with 230G of DDR4 RAM, and running even small models on it is atrociously slow.

Or just wait for the NVIDIA Digits PC later this year which will cost the ~same amount and can fit on your desk
zelcon··on Wild – A fast linker for Linux
It’s too hard to determine what pieces of your stack interact with public-facing services, particularly in a monorepo with thousands of developers. The effort involved and the legal risk if you get it wrong makes it an easy nope. Just ban AGPL.
zelcon··on Wild – A fast linker for Linux
Free software basically only exists because it’s subsidized by nonfree software. It also has no original ideas. Every piece of good free software is just a copy of something proprietary or some internal tool.
zelcon··on Show HN: Lightpanda, an open-source headless browser in Zig
Redoing what others have already done is not what I think of when I hear "frontier effort"
zelcon··on Show HN: Lightpanda, an open-source headless browser in Zig
That's Zig for you. A ``modern'' systems programming language with no borrow checker or even RAII.

Why didn't you just fork Chromium and strip out the renderer? This is guaranteed to bitrot when the web standards change unless you keep up with it forever and have perpetual funding. Yes, modifying Chromium is hard, but this seems harder.
zelcon··on Wild – A fast linker for Linux
Corps don't want to have to release the source code for their internal forks. They could also potentially be sued for everything they link using it because the linked binaries could be "derivative works" according to a judge who doesn't know anything.
zelcon··on Parinfer: Simpler Lisp Editing
I try to use paredit-mode, but it never seems to integrate well with evil/vim keybindings. I always end up disabling paredit-mode after a few hours. I'll give this a spin.
zelcon··on Show HN: GUI for editing Mermaid class diagrams
Props for somehow convincing all the foundation models to generate charts using your markup. It is guaranteed to survive a very long time now.
zelcon··on ZFS 2.3 released with ZFS raidz expansion
Tbh the idea of keeping backups defeats the purpose of using RAIDZ (especially RAIDZ3). I don’t want to buy an LTO drive, so if I backup, it’s either buying more HDDs or S3 Glacier ($$$). I like RAIDZ so I don’t have to buy so many drives. I guess it protects you if your house burns down, but how many people do offsite backups for their personal files? And dormant, unpowered HDDs die a lot faster than live, powered HDDs.
zelcon··on Voyage-code-3
Release the weights or buy an ad. This doesn’t deserve front page.
zelcon··on ZFS 2.3.0 released with ZFS raidz expansion
Been running it since rc2. It’s insane how long this took to finally ship.
zelcon··on ZFS 2.3 released with ZFS raidz expansion
You need to buy the same exact drive with the same capacity and speed. Your raidz vdev be as small and as slow as your smallest and slowest drive.

btrfs and the new bcachefs can do RAID with mixed drives, but I can’t trust either of them with my data yet.

zelcon··on The Static Site Paradox
GH/CF Pages are only "free" if you have no/minimal traffic. Also, even that free tier will go away if you start popularizing it as a Wordpress alternative or make the barriers to entry lower. Let's keep it free, please

Envoy. The answer and final word in this space is Envoy.
zelcon··on Analyzing the OpenAPI Tooling Ecosystem
Please, people, just use GRPC or Thrift. This stuff makes me want to vomit.
zelcon··on Microsoft donates the Mono Project to the Wine team
Kind of suspected people might actually be doing that. “You may live to see man-made horrors beyond your comprehension.”

Create an ASP.NET Core web server embedded in a binary bundled with Electron and a React frontend. (jk)
zelcon··on Clay (short for C Layout) is a high performance 2D UI layout library
Nice work. Love the arena allocators. Show those Rust weenies that memory management doesn't need all that ceremony.
zelcon··on "Tinyboxes finally have a buy it now button"
Unless you're making money off it, $15k + however much you have to spend on installing a new breaker panel is too much to spend on hardware that will be outdated in 2 years. If you're making money off it, but you're still cheap, then buy a Supermicro + H100s and colo it in a datacenter. If you're not cheap, you'll just use Azure. So I'm not sure who this product is supposed to be for.

zelcon··on Qlot: Common Lisp Library Manager
Really unfortunate that Guix never took off. Guile is so much nicer than Nix slop.
zelcon··on HMPL – template language for displaying UI from server to client
Ah sweet finally I don't have to use JavaScript to make websites

*looks inside, it's JavaScript*

zelcon··on Show HN: I built Mailhub – A scalable API for sending emails with ease not tears
There's nothing wrong with SMTP. It's perfect. If your complaint is that it isn't a binary protocol, then you're the type of sender it was designed to keep out.
