Public cloud is a giant scam to make sure 80% of VC money trickles back up to the big three. Most of these startups in Soma could run their product on a single threaded C++ server. But that's not cool and trendy. You're supposed to pretend that you could suddenly become Google overnight, so you need The Cloud(TM), microservices, and all kinds of redundant garbage.
zelcon··on The web as a GUI toolkit
This is cool but it would have been easier to build in Java or Dart or C++.
zelcon··on The web as a GUI toolkit
Honestly I would not shed a single tear if node.js and npm got thanos'd out of existence overnight. It is hands down the worst thing to happen to software, arguably even worse than C.

ABCL exists and is easier to use java libs from than Clojure

Qt, Flutter, JavaFX, hell even Swing is infinitely better than any JS framework. Easier to get started with. Easier to ship. Easier to maintain. Easier to do actual, you know, computer stuff with because you can do actual I/O and talk to the OS. It's not even in the same solar system as JS, from either the user's or the developer's perspective.

The state of the art in web is React which is an ad-hoc, informally-specified, bug-ridden, slow implementation of half of Win32's UI loop.

"Bulletproof Coffee"(TM) is snake oil stuff. It's based on the assumption that all other coffee on the market has mycotoxins, yet literally none of the brands in first world countries have them anyway. This was confirmed by tests.
zelcon··on Machine Learning and Ketosis
Maybe your weight loss rate accelerated because you started watching what you eat more carefully, knowing that you want to provide the most sanitary input to your program. Anyway this is impressive for a n=1 study. Glad it worked for you.

Also, OP, what materials would you recommend for a machine learning newbie?

Yeah, noticed this as well. How can CNN be so oblivious this long? I think the hacker used it to advertise their little web host firm.
zelcon··on Show HN: Full Stack Lisp – A book in progress about writing Common Lisp apps
Lisp is a better language than Clojure. People only use Clojure out of force.
zelcon··on Show HN: Full Stack Lisp – A book in progress about writing Common Lisp apps
I recently gave up Lisp for Clojure instead because of the dearth of "batteries," so this book is very important and timely.

zelcon··on Leftpad C++
How is it not clear by my using ONLY standard C library headers that I am NOT trying to write "modern C++"?

The STL has its uses…when you're writing a high level program, for example, that queries a database or when you need to pivot matrices for rendering some graphics. But if you're writing a string manipulating function that's presumably going to be called tons of times, it makes no sense to draw in big monsters like the STL. It's like bringing a jackhammer to nail a picture on drywall.

As for manual memory management, this is C++, not Python. If you're willing to use smart pointers, then you shouldn't even be using C++ because that sacrifices determinism and performance just as much or more than GC. If I wanted that kind of software, I would just use a much quicker-to-write language like Java/Go/CL.

zelcon··on Google opens access to its speech recognition API
Google Search API, Autocomplete, Finance, Voice all closed with tons of active users. I'm not blaming Google; they were acting in their best interest, but the consequence is less enthusiasm for building software that depends on their APIs.

IMO a better option for Google, when considering to close an API, is to enforce payment and hike the price enough to justify maintaining it. If and only if enough users drop out with the higher price, then shut it down for good.

zelcon··on Google opens access to its speech recognition API
Great, now when will Google let us use the OCR engine they crowdsourced from us over the last decade with ReCaptcha. tesseract is mediocre.
