zdkl··on What's New in SQLite 3.35
There's a very similar project, https://github.com/rqlite/rqlite which has always felt more pleasant me.
zdkl··on Being on Call
One could argue the qualities of a soldier or officer (individuals) transcend their organisational context (groups) and time. In other words: politics, technology or best practices change, not the responsabilities. The ability (necessity, even) to adapt to that fact defines a fit-for-service soldier/officer.

So, I contend you find remarkable soldiers even in terrible groups, and that they (individuals) should not be judged on their group but on their own qualities of service.

Whether you find those parameters noble is entirely subjective and not mine to question but I do believe anyone who sincerely understands and accepts these obligations deserves respect, as an individual.

zdkl··on Command Line Shell for SQLite
The attack isn't on `Pjmlp. I wanted to ask, as politely as possible, if he was aware that his comments consistently felt like a grumpy old man bringing nothing interesting to hacker news.

`Badsectoracula made a good case (better than the subject himself) for his opinion, and honestly, I agree with it! I just wish it wasn't always phrased in such a blasé negative fashion is all I wanted to convey.

zdkl··on Command Line Shell for SQLite
Every time I see a message from you it's a variant of "back in my day", "this isn't New" or some other mildly snooty point about kids these days. At this point I'm curious what even brings you to consistently comment like this. I apologise for the ad hominem but frankly the pattern is frequent and irritating?

Could you at least describe your use case or tools please? Share the nostalgia or something, anything.

zdkl··on I don't want to do front-end anymore
I understand what you mean but disagree. I merely appreciate tools that make some effort to standardise their UX. Of course configuration is going to be a major part of the system; however that doesn't mean I must use fragmented tools to manage them.

For instance, I avoid touching those Java tools you mention (or Javascript), preferring leiningen et al. from the Clojure ecosystem. If I don't want to deal with CMAKE or whatever the hell php or perl or erlang or go use, I can use my distro's package manager (coincidentally, yay) to abstract them away. If something goes wrong (which rarely happens these days!) it's even money that the problem comes from some Node/JS intermediate abomination which doesn't even show you the curtesy of being tractable in its scope or mode of operation.

And your last line is uncalled for. I'm happy you like the current state of affairs, but my very subjective view is that I'm not affected by the JS-land Stockholm syndrome. Doesn't mean I don't enjoy dealing with the domain problems :)

zdkl··on Many small queries are efficient in SQLite
SQlite "merely" assumes that the problems that come with distributed systems are handled at the application layer. You'll have to solve those problems for yourself, sure, but in practice I have rarely (I think never actually) had dataloss through a fault of sqlite.

Also, did you know you can use in-memory instances (and share them across threads!) with the right incantation? And that you can backup your on-disk instance to an in-memory one, do your expensive transactions without hitting the disk then backup the modified instance right back to disk, even in-place if you want!

Sqlite is amazing when you don't expect the DB to do replication or failover on its own.

zdkl··on I don't want to do front-end anymore
Well since there's a plural in "CLIs", that goes into the "wrangling" category for me. If the dev/dep process involves more than one bespoke tool (looking at you js/Node monstrosities) and learning the arcana of their interactions, I'm out.
zdkl··on The world is full of wasted motion
The physical and public safety requirements on railroad tracks demands different parameters. Also, there was significant community and government buy-in for lack of alternative. Cost-of-living adjusted, those tracks you mention would cost astronomical sums by todays standards.
zdkl··on The world is full of wasted motion
That's a weird area to to want to de-socialise costs! If trucking costs go up to cover wear, urban end-users probably won't notice much cost difference (bit of change to last-mile infrastructure at most) while remote communities would be bled dry then cutoff (where the "last-mile" location is impractical for tracks). And probably the same fate for small and medium agricultural concerns who won't necessarily be able to privately link up to the network.
zdkl··on How to Lose Money
I believe an important point is that happy != informed.
zdkl··on Docker, Django, Traefik, and IntercoolerJS: My go-to stack for building a SaaS
>What’s your disaster recovery plan if your server tips over?

Git pull, python3 setup_prod.py, pip install requirements.txt

Is docker worth not writing the 50 (admittedly unfun) lines of setup?

zdkl··on The Spoon Theory (2003)
This notion of limits and edge reminds me of Hunter Thompson's musings on "The Line" in his piece about the Hell's Angels. He argues (wildly paraphrasing) that the fundamental draw (and in some sense, the art) of motorcycles or extreme sports is in finding that edge or limit. The problem he identifies being that you cannot really know where it is without going over it, with all the consequences.

zdkl··on WhatsApp Beaten by Apple’s New iMessage Privacy Update
The trite answer is a modal going something like "the content you're trying to access A) isn't available on your <AppName-Level subscription> or B) isn't in our walled garden of third party providers". I don't like how it sounds but I'm confident they could sell that.

Heck, integrate it into messenger and treat all content like emoji/stickers you must acquire from a controlled source to circulate.

zdkl··on The Confusing World of USB
My use case is I don't necessarily trust one end of the connection to behave, so I want the ability to just give/take power and involve exactly 0 software. I understand that's not the usual consumer story, and the best argument I can come up with for the general case is it could make any USB compatible wall plug safe to use to charge up.
zdkl··on The Confusing World of USB
They are, and frankly that they need to exist is the single most egregious example of why USB isn't what I need it to be. What (I'm surprised) I haven't seen is a male-to-female adapter with a switch on it that physically kills the data tx lines.

They only have to worry about moderation if they host anything. They can keep Apple clean of social networks while endorsing and supporting an open protocol or format for fetching/presentation into a thin client (something like ActivityPub/ActivityStreams, to pick an existing implementation that could make sense to adopt/adapt). I don't know, I think that'd be a very "Apple" thing to do with integrations into the rest of their client side ecosystem.
zdkl··on The Ampere Altra Review: 2x 80 Cores Arm Server Performance Monster
I agree, that's what I'm rocking: a bunch of 8gig pi's doing everything from RAM, and a threadripper DB server. All at home, all for <3k out front. Equivalent monthly bill at a major hoster would be >200/month more than electricity + the cost of <low single digit> hours needed.

The same setup with a more reasonably priced consumer proc (but no ECC) would be around 1.5k out front.

zdkl··on The Ampere Altra Review: 2x 80 Cores Arm Server Performance Monster
Beefy CPU, couple TB of HDDs and an SSD to boot off of: (comfortably) host your own private cloud. And probably a <whatever social/messaging solution you prefer> instance for your friends & family too if you're feeling adventurous. Via authenticated Tor Hidden Services, for optimum easy-safe ratio.

Now the value of a private cloud is a subjective question, true, but personal experience suggests having it right there on home lan encourages practical use, especially in a shared flat.

zdkl··on What was Aragorn's tax policy? [video]
Well maybe after the more fanatical followers couldn't follow through on the demanded blood/power/life offerings the powers that be continued to levy their sacrifices in an indirect way, that manifests itself as low birth rates or particularily high infant mortality?

I have no relevant information for that era so this is purely a translation note. I'd love to learn more though, would you mind sharing additional reading you find pertinent?

I question your use of "seceding" for "conjuré". As far as I understand, the connotation of ~seperation from a whole~ is absent in the original french which I'd argue speaks more of the spontaneous and unsanctioned nature of this militia's constitution.

As in "le peuple ..., conjuré entre soi" could be adapted to "the people, having organised to take arms"

zdkl··on Silk Road Bitcoins worth $1B transferred after seven years
Ever wonder why there are so many of these scams? Even with very low conversion efficiency, it works over time with acceptable safety guarantees for the sell side. See scalped tickets, low cost bus travel & gift cards.

What could possibly go wrong trying to negotiate with <any country>'s intelligence/ops departement while being a very disappearable private person!
zdkl··on Gabe Newell applies for NZ residency
Not from NZ, but consider this: do you want to San Francisco-ize (multiply living costs, entrench a landlord caste & create weird incentives for local politics) the place? Because lots of foreign money simply walking into a heretofore sedate local real estate and business ecosystem is how you do that. Cf. Toronto, SF, Paris, London, Munich &c
zdkl··on Excess All-Cause Mortality in the US and 18 Comparison Countries
Is WW2 generally perceived in america as having caused many deaths among american military aged males? I'm sure we can point to D-day and other punctual events as being outstandingly bloody but does this extend to the whole conflict?

I'd be particularily interested in comparing the above ratio for Vietnam, or to German or Russian (combat & non-) WW2 deaths.

zdkl··on Tor 0day: Finding IP Addresses
Well sample size of 1 and all that but I can attest to at least my legit use case. I'm hosting some friends-and-family small services from home and front them with a couple Hidden Services. That gives me some measure of mutual privacy from my users as well as strict access control via auth being baked in the transport protocol.

The alternative would have been providing a dynamic DNS type URL, mucking around with LetsEncrypt and the DNS provider periodically and then implementing all access control in the servers. I'm lazy, Tor works for this use case and I'm lucky my users understand the 3 steps to configure their Tor browser so I'm sold on the usefulness of this mechanism!
