zavi··on California jury says Bayer must pay $2B to couple in Roundup cancer trial
HackerNews:

American-owned company collects logs when you use their free website - pure evil that needs to be banished; due process is not necessary.

European-owned company gives people literal cancer - system is totally rigged and unjust. More evidence needed.

zavi··on Does Employment-Based Insurance Make US Medical Care Unfair and Inefficient?
Yes it does.
zavi··on Google launches new “portal” HTML element
If mywebsite.com embeds the portal for othersite.com, and user navigates into it, is there a way for mywebsite.com to keep tracking user interactions inside othersite.com?
zavi··on Canada Border Services seizes lawyer's phone, laptop for not sharing passwords
Why would it not be on the phone?
zavi··on Eric Schmidt Steps Down from Alphabet’s Board of Directors
Larry hasn't been the Google CEO for some time now. I do think the company got caught up in incremental goals and internal PC struggles during Sundar's time, making it feel like yet another large company rather than a powerful disruptor it used to be.
zavi··on Canada Group Sues Government over Google's Sidewalk Labs
The filed complaint is talking about the area outside the port that would be "affected" by the light rail.
zavi··on Canada Group Sues Government over Google's Sidewalk Labs
They are complaining about Google's proposal to expand light rail in surrounding areas, arguing that the residential land is so precious there and shouldn't be disrupted. Sounds like NIMBY activism.
zavi··on India will soon overtake China to become the most populous country in the world
Also significantly younger on average. China has a serious aging problem, with average age on par with many wealthier countries.
zavi··on AMP pages displaying your own domain
Sounds like a criticism of Reddit moreso than AMP.
zavi··on AMP pages displaying your own domain
AMP URLs are ugly, so cleaning them up is good for users.
zavi··on AMP pages displaying your own domain
Users love it so unlikely.
zavi··on Indian government asks Apple and Google to take down TikTok app
Instagram is significantly better at filtering out content featuring minors.
zavi··on Indian government asks Apple and Google to take down TikTok app
You don't have to imagine, you can use it for 30 minutes yourself, it's wild west.
zavi··on Indian government asks Apple and Google to take down TikTok app
Check out Weibo, there's already a Proud Han army furiously attributing this ban to an Indian-American conspiracy designed to stop China's rightful rise.

The reality is, if you are unable to prevent millions of your users from seeing videos of sexualized children you will get in trouble.

zavi··on Your Android Phone Is a Security Key
This post is not about Google authenticator. It's about making a different 2FA solution for their accounts in particular.
zavi··on Your Android Phone Is a Security Key
This is 2FA for Google accounts so of course it's on Google products?
zavi··on Google’s new AI ethics board is already falling apart
Imagination and anger
zavi··on How Big Tech Built the Iron Cage
What a nonsense blanket statement.
zavi··on H-1B Employer Data Hub
No
zavi··on At $75K, housing a prisoner in California now costs more than a year at Harvard
It costs $1240 per year in Ukraine. Why not make a deal with Ukraine and house them there? (Assuming we at the same time stop jailing people for drug related crimes which should require medical rehab instead)
zavi··on At $75K, housing a prisoner in California now costs more than a year at Harvard
There's a lot of variability per-state. Also it's not as exuberant on a per capita basis compared to other wealthy countries that also choose not to treat prisoners like animals: https://steemit.com/prison/@gaby-de-wilde/what-prisons-costs...

The California problems really are: 1. Volume - too many people doing time for non-violent crimes 2. Healthcare costs for prisoners and employees (also seems like a root cause of every major problem in the US) 3. General inefficiency / Unions etc.

Honestly I think the rational approach for the US would be to forget every single issue and focus entirely the healthcare costs. Nuke the problem with either complete government control of the prices in the system or liberalizing supply side thru abolishing of licensing requirements / AMA / FDA / CLIA / etc.

zavi··on Nokia phones sent identifiable data to Chinese server
Masking domain name is ineffective security by obscurity. It's trivial to trace where it goes anyways.
zavi··on Google hit with €1.5B fine from EU over advertising
They pay immediately then dispute in court.
zavi··on Google hit with €1.5B fine from EU over advertising
Nothing will happen to those other sites because for this particular case Google has already changed its practice after the EU filed an objection in 2016. This fine is retroactive to cover the damages made during the 10 years of investigation. https://www.marketwatch.com/story/the-latest-eu-fine-on-alph...
zavi··on EU government websites have undisclosed adtech trackers from Google and others
Is it possible to sue them for this?
zavi··on US refuses to ground Boeing 737 Max
No? FAA makes these decisions.
zavi··on Andreessen Horowitz is opening an office in SF
Google and Facebook are expanding aggressively in SF also.
zavi··on Andreessen Horowitz is opening an office in SF
There's not a whole lot of data suggesting an exodus from SF.

There's increasing amounts of VC funding in Asia so SFBA is not as dominant as it used to be 20 years ago but SF is still by far the center of the universe as far as starting a startup goes, and there's no major trends that would suggest a decline in absolute terms.

zavi··on China orders its airlines to suspend use of Boeing 737 Max aircraft
How do you know that? Are you a person at FAA responsible for these decisions and protocols?
zavi··on Updates from YC
Because Oakland is sketchy (way more so than gentrified parts of SF) - people want to live in SF, that's what the blog post alludes to also. Some parts look post-apocalyptic with dozens of tents in a single encampment. I bet you if city manages to clean up the homeless and finish the bike line across the Bay Bridge there will be an explosion of startups because it's a perfect place to be in otherwise.
