Gmail interoperated with other email providers, so invites worked. Facebook limited signups based on email domain names, not invite codes, so everyone in those email domains could sign up at the same time. Google+, like Bluesky, started with invite codes without a way for communities to join organically.
Pointers are a bit more abstract than that. Since each program has a virtual address space, and said address space is made up of memory pages, even raw pointers need to be translated to the physical address via TLBs. In that sense, indices into arrays are more like pointers than the other way around.

That was the case for a while, but when they were updated to use GPLv3, Apple stopped updating them, probably to avoid licensing problems on iOS. Nowadays you can install them from Homebrew, MacPorts, straight from source, or other methods.
80’s cars have hoods shorter than your average child. 20’s SUVs and trucks have hoods as tall as some adults. That’s a major difference. Also, there’s probably more traffic in any given area as there are like a 100 million more people in the US than back in the 80’s.
