zaius··on Facebook launches employee ferry service from SF
One big problem is that the SF bay is shallow and there's a lot of silt built up in the areas where startups would want stops.
zaius··on When Random Isn't Random Enough: Lessons from an Online Poker Exploit
A similar idea was done by silicon graphics using a lava lamp - http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lavarand
zaius··on Kirkpatrick: Bitcoin Matters Because It Is Transnational, Nongovernmental
This has been my #1 argument for bitcoin. I have a bank account in Australia, and a bank account in the US. For me to move money I can:

1. swift transfer - minimum $30, takes a couple weeks

2. paypal transfer - no fees, but exchange rates are awful, takes a couple days

3. go to an ATM, withdraw money from my overseas account, walk into the bank and deposit that same money. Around $15 per withdrawal, instant.

Now with bitcoin, I deposit, transfer, then withdraw. Admittedly, it's still not instant since I'm using coinbase, but I feel it will get there eventually.

zaius··on BitTorrent Sync 7 Times Faster Than Dropbox
As far as metrics go, I'm not too worried about syncing speed. My main complaint with dropbox is indexing - it slows my computer to a crawl whenever I make lots of changes. Enough so that I disable it the second I'm on battery power. Anyone have any insight in to how BT sync performs in this area?
zaius··on Data - DOM binding using ES6 Proxies
Nice example. I think proxies are really going to clean up a lot of the Javascript binding libs out there.

Any idea what's been holding back the adoption of proxies? It's still only implemented in firefox: http://kangax.github.io/es5-compat-table/es6/#Proxies

zaius··on Bitcoin Mining Uses $15 Million's Worth Of Electricity Every Day?
Well that's a very subjective question. Compared to keeping an ounce of gold under your mattress, yes. Compared to Western Union's daily operating costs, no.
zaius··on Bitcoin Mining Uses $15 Million's Worth Of Electricity Every Day?
I was curious so here's my napkin calculations:

Assume a block erupter is the base level to get into mining now. The network hash rate right now is 6,751,767.65 GH/s. Let's round to 6,600,000GH/s. Block erupters are 330MH/s and take 2.5w. The network would need 20m of them. That would be 50MW, or 1,200MWh / day. PG&E charges me $0.15 per kWh. So running the network would be $180,000 / day.

Yeah there's a lot of assumptions in there, but that's nowhere near $15m.

zaius··on Ask HN: PHP vs. Node.js vs. Go for a new startup?

zaius··on Ask HN: PHP vs. Node.js vs. Go for a new startup?
I'm going to go against the grain here and say ditch php and build it on node. There is no better way to update your skillset than by building your own product with a tool you've never used. If you're building a web app, you'll need to learn JavaScript regardless.

Worry about scaling problems when you hit them, not when you're picking a language. For comparison, I serve 100k users per day using rails/Postgres on a single $80/month linode server.

zaius··on Ember.js 1.0 Released
I started down this path a month or two ago and you're right - it's actually quite a big job. I've been working on a real time system for rails / ember that moves all data over a websocket and allows subscribing to updates, however it has been very hard to get working with ember-data. I've currently have it running with my own (terrible) data layer but I would really like to get it running with ember-data again before I get it up on github.
zaius··on Humor: Interview with an Ex-Microsoftie Who Used to Name OS Folders
I think I would actually be happy with a ~/etc. Dotfiles in the home directory needs to stop being a thing.
zaius··on The Startup Legitimizer
The best satire is indistinguishable from reality.
zaius··on Detroit files for Chapter 9 bankruptcy amid staggering debts
Pretty sure they're all separately incorporated, so it wouldn't affect them directly. It will affect retires who moved out of Detroit into these cities and now rely on Detroit pensions.
zaius··on Why I Left OpenBSD
Posted June 3, 2010. Though that's not to suggest that I think things have changed since then.
zaius··on Learn Git Branching
Why is git so hard? Is it that it encapsulates concepts that are inherently difficult to grasp? Or is it just that I need to think about things in a different way? I still feel after 5 years of git use that I am useless with it.
zaius··on NeoCities
Really, that's what all startups are doing. At least he's being honest about it.
zaius··on Retiring Chrome Frame
I know my parents are going to die, but I'm still going to be sad when it happens.
zaius··on Uses of Tmux Explained
Mac specific, but hold option+command when selecting and you can select in block mode.
zaius··on OpenCola Soft Drink
The author mentions the soda stream carbonation doesn't really produce the desired effect. A tangentially related question: How does commercial carbonation work? Is it just keeping the liquid under pressure for a while with CO2 present? Is it done on a per bottle / can basis, or is it done in big vats and then sealed quickly afterwards?
zaius··on Arduino Uno vs BeagleBone vs Raspberry Pi
Thanks for these links. I ended up grabbing a routerboard 450G because they look like a really nice piece of kit. Probably overkill for playing around with routing, but I couldn't help myself.
zaius··on Arduino Uno vs BeagleBone vs Raspberry Pi
Has anyone tried using a beaglebone as a router? I was considering getting one and using a USB Ethernet to add a second interface.

An aside - are there any arm boards with dual Ethernet? Are there any with gigabit Ethernet? Could they theoretically even keep up with 2 gigabit ports?

zaius··on Connecting an iPad retina LCD to a PC
I used oshpark for a project recently - http://magicsquarefloor.com - the boards were absolutely beautiful.
zaius··on tmux 1.8 Released

    bind C-a last-window
Switch the C-a for whatever your bind-key is.
zaius··on tmux 1.8 Released
Add these to your ~/.tmux.conf

    setw -g mode-mouse on
    setw -g mouse-select-window on
    setw -g mouse-select-pane on
    setw -g mouse-resize-pane on
Then you can scroll in panes, but also select like normal by holding alt/option.
zaius··on Avoiding Common Backbone.js Pitfalls
Respectfully disagree with point 3 - "Doing unnecessary XHR requests on page load".

It's better to have your main app page completely static so it can be cached. That said, don't use ajax either - load the initial data via its own script tag.

zaius··on Stabilizing Ember Data
I think this is a great idea. Ember-data is powerful, but it's still very unpolished, and there are a lot of hard problems left to solve. I don't think it should be rushed just because ember is now close to v1.
zaius··on Lockitron To Be Powered By Electric Imp
Interesting. What happens when you plug a regular SD card into a imp slot? And what happens when you plug an imp into a standard SD slot?
zaius··on Lockitron To Be Powered By Electric Imp
I love the idea of flashing the wifi details onto the device and skipping WPS. Someone did a similar thing for a project at the launch festival hackathon a couple weeks ago. Looks like the video is down, but the demo page is still up with viewable source. No app to show it working though: http://theboxforgotten.com/bridge/

A question re the imp - why would they decide to use an SD card format?

zaius··on You just went to the Google homepage. What actually happened?
Ah, no I didn't mean FPGAs as the next step for implementation, I meant more as a development tool.

For example, it would be cool if there was some sort of software that would let you design multiple-chip setups that would usually require breadboarding, but then run the whole circuit on the FPGA. That design could be transformed straight into a PCB that's ready for fab with the discrete components.

zaius··on You just went to the Google homepage. What actually happened?
What about FPGAs? I feel like they could solve so much of this problem if the tools were better. Though I haven't used them since college, so I have no idea what the current status is.
