zahrc··on Ex-Reddit CEO on Twitter moderation
I’ve been playing very very active from 2010 to 2014 and since then on-off, sometimes skipping a season.

Recently picked it up again and I noticed that I didn’t had to use /mute all anymore. I’ve got all-chat disabled by default so I’ve got no experience there, but overall I’d say it has come a long way.

But I’d also say it depends which mode and MMR you are in. I mostly play draft pick normals or ARAMs in which I both have a lot of games played - I heard from a mate that chat is unbearable in low level games.

zahrc··on Ask HN: What social media site could replace Twitter?
> Instead, it seems everyone wants to live in a comfortable echo chamber, parroting the apparent consensus opinions

Isn’t exactly this happening on the other side of the fence as well?

zahrc··on Interactive Submarine Cable Map
The CLION terminates in Rostock which is quite hit and near a river, called Warnow.

zahrc··on The Germans Have Learned Nothing from History – DER Spiegel
How is the UK falling apart?

Inflation rates are lower than in Germany.[0]

The pound is 3ct weaker than it was last year and just as strong as 2019. [1]

I’m not an economist, so I am genuinely curious how you measure that.

zahrc··on Train Travel in the UK: A Foreigner’s Perspective
I pay £8 for a 13 mile (~20 minute) train ride, 3 days a week.

Quick maths:

8*3 = £24 per week

24*4 = £96 per month

96*12 = £1152 per year

Which is about 4% of my annual income.

If I would take the train everyday, it would be about 6%. On top of that I also make up about 2.5 miles by foot every single day, to save on bus fares or even worse, cabs.

A comparison of a car driver would be useful.

zahrc··on How to Write a Cover Letter for a Job
The author seems to be British (mentioning GCSEs) and I always thought that cover letters are not really used anymore. Anywhere I applied, about 3 years back, most of the recruitment agencies and job listings used those janky auto-fill CV forms. I am a bit confused about the importance of cover letters anyway.

Back in Germany, a good cover letter is the first step through the door, but I always assumed through experience, that in the UK it’s usually not really used even - especially not in paper form.

Anyway, I might have to apply for new jobs soon, so I’ll take any advice and go any extra mile I possibly can.

zahrc··on Hitler’s Teeth Confirm He Died in 1945 (2018)
If you look at the building from above, looks like a swastika. Took me a while to get it
zahrc··on Making the dislike count private across YouTube
Great, now I have to trust this wonderful algorithm.
zahrc··on Many young people diagnosed with Tourette’s after watching a YouTube channel
Probably not. Don’t know much about TikTok, but if I click a link on YouTube, barely watching the video, my recommendations will be spammed with similar filth forever - and it seems to be pushing certain channels or types of videos.

Educated guess, as I’ve no idea how these things work - videos I’m more likely to share will be recommended, bringing controversial content to the top

zahrc··on TikTok requests access to devices on local network
Which is usually only when it appears - when I specifically request the app to do something which requires to scan for local devices.

Tiktok doesn’t support chrome cast (I think)

zahrc··on India is leading IPv6 migration with 61.67% adoption
Exactly. And as a developing country, they (hard guess) do not have the widespread pre-existing infrastructure like developed countries; and therefore can easier to adopt to it.

Another factor - mobile has a way greater market share in India, than mobile has in Europe. It’s easier to enforce IPv6 as a mobile carrier

zahrc··on Nvidia Reveals Its CEO Was Computer Generated in Keynote Speech
> only 14 seconds of the hour and 48 minute presentation were animated.

Useless PR gimmick, which did not impress me at all.

zahrc··on Captcha pictures force you to look at the world the way an AI does
They’re depressing to me because they are a chore - I don’t think much about them, just as I fail to see the beauty in washing up plates.
zahrc··on Blizzard's reputation collapsed in just three years
Yes. Especially with the release of WoW cataclysm
zahrc··on Blizzard's reputation collapsed in just three years
I’ll give them that one, as people have been demanding the re-releases, especially classic and Diablo
zahrc··on Blizzard's reputation collapsed in just three years
Blizzards reputation has been going downhill since the merge with Activision. Some of my veteran WoW friends returned with the release of classic and TBC classic, but no one stayed for long. Blizzard has been destroying all of their franchises

WoW - convoluted imbalanced hot mess

Diablo - repetitive. Diablo immortal.

Warcraft III - buggy and laggy steaming pile of undelivered promises

Overwatch - imbalanced. Overwatch 2 with weird changes

StarCraft - thrown in a ditch left to die

HoTS - culled the competitive scene and super slow release cycle.

Hearthstone - pay2win RNG fiesta

On top of that all the scandals and drama around the company…

zahrc··on 'Arthur,' the longest-running kids animated series, is ending
Stop motion animation is still animation and as far as I can remember (born in 1994) it also had smaller cartoon animation clips.
zahrc··on Local BBC radio not available online outside UK during Tokyo Olympics
The article is talking about radio channels and those are indeed free and available world wide, hence they’ve been “blocked” as they would be broadcasting olympics for free outside of the Uk.

I’ve realised that I wrote “free television and radio network” in my parent, I can’t edit anymore.

zahrc··on Local BBC radio not available online outside UK during Tokyo Olympics
Long story short: broadcasting rights have been awarded to premium channels across Europe and the globe, therefore local radio stations of the BBC are restricted there, as the BBC is a free television and radio network in the uk.
zahrc··on Glued to Your Phone? Here's How to Rethink Your Relationship with Social Media
Discord definitely falls under the “social networking” category, but can definitely used as a social media platform.

The rest is certainly social media.

The difference essentially,

Social media: broadcast a message, share news, showcase your stuff and get people to interact with it: Facebook, insta, tiktok, reddit, HN - not necessarily two-way

Social networking: engage in two-way communication with similar minded people

zahrc··on Schizophrenia linked to marijuana use disorder is on the rise
Does marijuana cause schizophrenia? Probably not.

Does long term self-medication of it for mental health disorders boosts their symptoms? Probably. Paranoia is a common side effect and I don’t think that’s very beneficial for someone who is already struggling.

zahrc··on Glued to Your Phone? Here's How to Rethink Your Relationship with Social Media
I think there is not just one problem, people have different needs and holes to fill.

The social media platforms attract different demographics, because they fit in different niches.

The reason why people are drawn to Facebook, differs from 4chan.

On Instagram people want to be discovered and seen, creating and sharing art and take the credit for it.

While people go to 4chan to be anonymous, which generates questionable content.

I personally go on HN because the community is close to home, but why is that?

zahrc··on Glued to Your Phone? Here's How to Rethink Your Relationship with Social Media
Social media nowadays is not just Facebook, Twitter, Instagram and TikTok.

There is Discord, Reddit, LinkedIn, Twitch, YouTube… I’d even count HN.

There a many people, possibly still the minority, but very solid amount of people way to invested in those

See those twitch donation whales, for example, the amount is big enough to have sparked a more than feasible business. I wouldn’t call that responsible.

zahrc··on Even if you’re paying, you’re still the product
When using free products, I don’t mind ads, I do mind being tracked.

The problem nowadays is that tracking and ads are pretty much a mutual thing today. And the worst about it is, to this day I still have to find an ad which seems relevant to me…

zahrc··on Under the skin of OnlyFans
While I agree that OnlyFans and their creators are certainly abusing this, people need to be educated. We can’t be talking about toxic masculinity, predators and other very valid issues, without naming and shaming the enablers and abusers of these issues. And those creators are certainly abusing it, while OnlyFans is enabling them to.

I agree that what they do is economically genius and legit; but it’s morally dark grey and adds fuel to the fire.

zahrc··on Under the skin of OnlyFans
> These sad lonely sexless men spend all their money on this shit. It consumes them, until they are out of money, then it destroys them. It warps their expectations of relationships further impacting their datability, driving them even more towards onlyfans.

IF I’d be that desperate I’d rather stick to a prostitute. Regular uploads aren’t even guaranteed. You could be paying something where you don’t even know the value of.

I hate this world of, everything needs to be a subscription…

On another note, I’m also glad that I’m in a healthy and happy relationship in my late 20’s because tinder in my area is 90% Instagram and OnlyFans ads.

zahrc··on Why is standing more tiring than walking? [audio]
Note: please bear with my ignorance when it comes to anything medial.

I can walk for hours and miles, but standing for even short durations is unbearable for me, due to pain & discomfort in my back and shoulders.

I’ve got “diagnosed” with an underdeveloped trapezius (and several other muscles in the upper back region) and my head is ‘heavier’ than those can carry, at least according to my GP, who used to be a physiotherapist. I’ve tried working out, with focus on these areas, posture corrections and sheer will power, but eventually I’ll end up slouching and my posture goes back to the hunchback of Notre Dame, because it feels more natural and ironically comfortable.

Nearing my 30s I’ve grown more desperate and pushed and pushed specialists and eventually they found out I have ‘minor’ scoliosis. Surgery will need to be paid privately, as it’s mostly discomfort and comparably not a lot of pain, and is therefore not an option at the moment. I can live with it, but the fear grows that it will get worse with age.

zahrc··on It feels lonelier at the top with everyone working from home
Nice piece, made me chuckle but then think “there probably is someone thinking like that.” Then I thought about my old job where the CEO hasn’t been seen since the beginning of the pandemic, while people had to go in the office because of “training” which had been done via video call anyway, due to restrictions.
zahrc··on Show HN: Connect your bank account to Google Sheets
Cool idea, awesome tool, maybe helpful for some, but hearing google and some third party in context of my bank account makes me want to wrap up in tin foil.
