I have never understood addiction either. My whole life I’ve been told that I am addicted to “computers” or video games, because I spent so much time on it. But frankly there wasn’t much better to do and it’s just a hobby, passion that now pays my bills…

Only until I started smoking cigarettes and later stopped I realised what addiction really means, and how hard it is to kick it.

zahrc··on Ask HN: Alternatives to GitHub
Literally the first paragraph:

> Forgejo is self-hostable free software for software development, built on top of Git. Codeberg is powered by Forgejo, which is in turn a hard-fork of Gitea. Compared to Codeberg, Forgejo is not one service, but free software to help you build your own. Everyone can install their own Forgejo instance to host their own projects. There are also public Forgejo instances as well as Codeberg you can use, but make sure you find a site that is actively maintained and updated, and that you trust the provider.

zahrc··on DMARC has been public since 2012 but most company domains still don't enforce it
Many email providers and third party security tools default settings automatically bounce or block SPF failures, no matter what DKIM says... so no, not using SPF completely is a bad idea.

Using it minimally is correct, thou. Route outbound mail through as few controlled relays as possible so your SPF record only needs to list infrastructure you actually *own*, rather than growing it every time a new tool needs to send mail.

I have seen way too many clients almost hit the char limit in a TXT record

zahrc··on Modder Runs GTA III Inside GTA: San Andreas on an In-Game TV
Writing custom scripts in PAWN and then later mods, hacks and cheats for CLEO was my personal gateway into coding. Most RP servers were so nepotistic, so that was my way of getting back and fighting the "system". Fun times, do not miss it tho.
zahrc··on Fable turned reMarkable into Tom Riddle's diary from Harry Potter
I speak as I think and I type and as I speak, so I do uses em-dashes. It’s a shame that it’s now a brand of low quality AI-generated content.
zahrc··on Tomorrow's emoji today: Unicode 17.0
I’ve been around the internet for a long and a lot of time and have never seen s2 being used to convey a heart… took me second to figure it out actually.

And look where that got Germany; my hometown and neighbouring towns are mostly on ADSL or rarely VDSL if you’re lucky, because the big players don’t want anything to do with the cost and legal side.

Local municipalities establish de-facto monopolies and drive prices up, because they offer slightly faster and stable lines.

There is a joint effort by local utility companies in Mecklenburg and they’re trying to make things better, but anecdotally are also challenging to deal with.

My now residence here in the UK is not really rural and for years Giganet/CityFibre/toob promised gigabit soonTM for years and the date got delayed and delayed and delayed.

zahrc··on All managers make mistakes; good managers acknowledge and repair
There is unfortunately no formula for it, apart from, play the game that senior management wants to be played.

I’d say, stick to your guns and find a job that supports your morales, not the other way around.

zahrc··on Persona vectors: Monitoring and controlling character traits in language models
No, it's nothing more than that, and that is the most frustrating. I agree with you on the other comment (https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=44777760#44778294) and a confidence metric or a simple "I do not know" could fix a lot of the hallucination.

In the end, <current AI model> is driven towards engagement and delivering an answer and that drives it towards generating false answers when it doesn't know or understand.

If it was more personality controlled, delivering more humble and less confident answers or even making it say that it doesn't know would be a lot easier.

zahrc··on Don't watermark your legal PDFs with purple dragons in suits
Any image in this position would be distracting.

However, I have never understood notions like this: “it is juvenile and impertinent. The Court is not a cartoon”

Is like my great grandpa scolding us at the dinner table for laughing and talking.

zahrc··on Windows Control Panel set for deprecation
Control panel is bad. The alternatives are worse. Prepare to have your settings gated behind several menus you have to navigate through!
zahrc··on Did GitHub Copilot increase my productivity?
And even then it happens to ignore context or queries from start or halfway through. I'd rather spend the time coding then trying to bruteforce it to give me the answer I need.

> It's not always easy doing that for Apple, but there's not ten different ways you have to do things for ten different manufacturers.

It's why, I, as a user, chose to stick with iOS. At least it's the devil I know, with the behaviour and boundaries that I can accept - without having to figure out every kink everytime there is an update.

I understand that some people prefer to tinker with their phones, I do not.

zahrc··on Nothing Phone says it will hack into iMessage, bring blue bubbles to Android
Comment from another poster (https://news.ycombinator.com/user?id=pokey96) down below

> From other sites, it seems it uses a Mac Mini in a server room as a proxy for iMessage to accomplish this, with the massive drawback of having to provide Nothing your Apple ID credentials.

No thanks, I’m good.

It would be only a relief for a symptom and not actually curing the cause.

zahrc··on Air France denied my delay compensation, so I challenged them and won
The best advice I can give people who struggle to claim something from an airline and get exhausted of getting rejected, use flightright.com. (No - not affiliated with them)

I had a claim rejected and initially it was rejected when flightright attempted to claim it. It went to court and even after commission I ended up with more money than I paid for the tickets.

All I had to do was sign a few documents and have patience.

zahrc··on Monster Energy Goes After Indie Dev for Using the Word 'Monster'
It baffles me how screwed the system is.

It’s an exaggeration, but you have to be genuinely afraid to found a company with Apple in their name. “Apple Farm” might get sued by Apple.

There should be a better process that involves a neutral party reviewing the claim and do sanity check if everyday names and items are used, before it actually becomes a lawsuit.

But instead we let the bullies win, because they have the money.

zahrc··on Understanding ChatGPT
You’re definitely on to something.

An example: when we interact with other human beings, we often really only care about the surface, don’t we? Mannerisms, looks, behaviour. Very rarely do we question those with “why?”. But who does? Psychologists.

Same with any technology. Consumers don’t care about the why, they care about the result.

Scientists and engineers care about the “why” and “how”.

Now, is it important to understand “what’s behind the curtain”? Yes. But for who is it important?

zahrc··on Freedom Clock
(Not American)

We think units that are used in different countries/cultures/continents are weird, because we’re not used to it. I can get behind the Fahrenheit bit, being more “human-readable” but for me 30C will always be hot.

zahrc··on Framework Laptop 16
Definitely go with the Steam Deck. It’s literally a portable pc which you can turn adhoc into a workstation, plug into a TV for sofa gaming and it’s really really bang for buck. The performance is amazing, the community caring and it runs on Linux.
zahrc··on Shareholders sue Google, claim it hid anticompetitive ad practices
Google didn’t hide it, they got away with it… until they didn’t. And investors put a blind eye on it. Now that the money is at risk, they sue.

Generally, retro gaming is such a fascinating ‘field’. Hardware emulation, software emulation, ROM hacking…
