zahrc··on TikTok just dropped a new realistic beauty filter
I wish she would’ve gone into more detail on why it’s bad, why it’s so frightening. I know the answer; but many don’t, and no one of the videos posted, gave any good insight on why this is scary. Call out the problem!

Seems like most of the videos posted in that thread are just adding noise to the existing noise. (For clicks of course)

zahrc··on Getting work done with PowerShell on Linux
No, not really. The PowerShell modules for the several M365 admin centres are, including the “new” MSGraph API, buggy, inconsistent and missing vital features across the board.

PowerShell is great, MickeySofts own modules, not.

zahrc··on New headless Chrome has been released and has a near-perfect browser fingerprint
Headed browser.

And maybe, but that will make enduser suffer more (as always), as more false-positives will be caught.

zahrc··on US defence forces no match for the unstoppable fiend known as Reply-All
Mimecast and some M365 defender plans offer those features.
zahrc··on Why is remote work seen as a gift?
Of course there might be exceptions, but isn’t it reasonable to expect that companies in bigger cities have more business and can therefore pay more?
zahrc··on Why is remote work seen as a gift?
Productivity is purely dependent on the individual or even teams. But I definitely agree with the “dead time”.

It would be a utopian world where employees respect and consider living conditions (eg single vs married; cost of living in specific area) and commutes. Make yourself valuable to negotiate better terms, or look for something better.

zahrc··on The teen mental illness epidemic began around 2012
Counterpoint: as we’re more open with with mental health challenges in adult life, teenagers are more open as well, or at least we can tell better.

The terms teenage angst and peer pressure existed before 2012.

P.S. I’m not saying that social media isn’t bad or making it worse, but there are other factors as well. And when I think of teenagers, I think of poor young humans that are just trying to find and prove themselves, and that is a lot of pressure.

100% with you on this one. And we need to make sure parents have the resources to learn themselves. So many parents these days are not even aware how accessible bad content is, or they even consume it themselves, not knowing why it’s bad.

As always with parenting there is no 100% right way to do it, but parents need to be educated first, so that they can make reasonable decisions by themselves.

zahrc··on Ask HN: Is StackOverflow Dying?
I have been using less SO over the years, as more and more libraries and even programming languages have their own Discord servers.

And there it’s easier and quicker to get a specialised reply, with less judgement or responses like “already answered in thread X”

zahrc··on Detect ChatGPT Generated Content
> Even though I disagree with a need for such tools

“Need” may be arguable, but why disagree?

zahrc··on TIL you can de-obfuscate code with ChatGPT
In my experience, ChatGPT often comes up with pseudo syntax.
zahrc··on You don't have to engage with people on the Internet
That’s a very… nihilistic view. I don’t get anything from this comment, apart from killing 2 minutes while on the loo.
zahrc··on Ask HN: How do you keep track of your medical history?
Fellow German here. Your GP probably knows you best, but consider what happens if an emergency happens while you are somewhere else, especially abroad.

I struggle with epilepsy, which presents itself in severe migraines. 2 out of 4 ER trips that I had in Germany resulted in me having to justify my emergency treatment plan (just give me Diazepam and something anti-nausea and let me sleep).

I have since moved to the UK and, fortunately, did not had to call emergency services yet, but I do have my full medical history on paper, with a translated summary that references the history. An even shorter summary is also available on my apple Medical ID, including the location of those documents.

TL;DR Don't take your health for granted, make your own efforts to preserve it and make it easier for emergency services to help you.

zahrc··on A cab ride I'll never forget (1999)
Small acts of kindness are more than enough to make someone else’s day. They sometimes even change lives. I hope this story reminds people that this is not just an empty platitude.
zahrc··on Getting Wealthy vs. Staying Wealthy
Step 1: have money Step 2: don’t lose said money.
zahrc··on I analyzed shuffling in a million games of MtG Arena (2020)
Thread is 3 years old and no 100% conclusive answer was found - move along nothing to see here.
zahrc··on I went through a period where I loaned money to anyone that asked me
That is so surreal to me. I had to loan money from friends for real emergencies and always made sure they get paid - often more than they gave. How can one not be guilt-ridden until their deathbed?
zahrc··on 75% of Covid ‘long haulers’ free of symptoms in 12 months: McMaster study
Patients account, medical history and differential diagnosis. The same way you diagnose chronic fatigue syndrome.

As someone with personal experience, *chronic* fatigue is difficult to measure, especially if it’s getting gradually worse, but routine tests like blood tests and ECG; especially under physical stress can measure degradation or improvements.

I personally cannot do my work commute without being absolutely knackered for hours, and sweating like hell - since I had covid.

zahrc··on Pelé has died
Maradona is a cheat, an arrogant one even. Which is a shame, cause he was a skilled individual.

You can argue about achievements all you like, but Maradonas personality does not hold up against Pele.

zahrc··on The death of Rackspace’s ‘fanatical support’
My first big project at my current job was to move all customers from hosted exchange 2013 to office 365. It was a difficult time for customers and the company, but the rackspace drama confirmed that was the right thing to do.

Funnily we have customer project to move them from several IMAP & HEX providers to O365 - the customer went radio silent for ages, but instantly called us to finally get it moving.

zahrc··on What things did you purchase that enhanced the quality of your life in 2022?
Same. Gaming aside, it’s now also my main device for any dev stuff - that I can take anywhere.

I’ve got a third-party dock and a portable USB-C hub with HDMI port, to literally carry it everywhere.
