zaggynl··on Jolla phone – a full-stack European alternative
What does full-stack mean here? Phone is fully produced in Europe? Software and online storage fully provided by European company?

edit: I want this phone, I have reserved a slot in the coming batch.

Just posing as an average Joe here, someone who does not host their own storage, calendar, contacts, phone tracking, remote wipe, the "free" features Google and Apple are known for on their phones.

zaggynl··on Let's put Tailscale on a jailbroken Kindle
Can someone correct me on this: Is using Tailscale effectively putting your firewall at someone else's PC?
zaggynl··on Modern messaging: Running your own XMPP server
I'm missing the actual self hosted guide where I can use my own hardware instead of a VPS.

How does this compare to say, startpage.com?
zaggynl··on Show HN: Real-time AI Voice Chat at ~500ms Latency
Neat! I'm already using openwebui/ollama with a 7900 xtx but the STT and TTS parts don't seem to work with it yet:

zaggynl··on Moving away from US cloud services
Regarding Startpage: https://www.startpage.com/privacy-please/startpage-articles/...

https://web.archive.org/web/20210729190016/https://support.s...

The original link is dead for some reason: https://support.startpage.com/index.php?/Knowledgebase/Artic...

TL;DR: Startpage appears owned by an ad company? https://web.archive.org/web/https://www.bizjournals.com/losa...

Could someone explain to me how an ad company and a privacy company work together? Seems like opposing interests?

Maybe Ecosia will be a good alternative later on: https://blog.ecosia.org/eusp/

Another suggestion would be https://searx.space/

zaggynl··on New Nextcloud v31 default setting might leak out user data
Thanks for the post, I just updated to 30.0.6 and have now turned off the settings as described here https://github.com/nextcloud/server/issues/51335#issuecommen... until a fix is out.
zaggynl··on Signal to leave Sweden if backdoor law passes
Good question! I assumed it was US only but things have changed a while back after it becoming popular it seems. Going by https://signal.org/blog/signal-is-expensive/

>Because everything in Signal is end-to-end encrypted, we can rent server infrastructure from a variety of providers like Amazon AWS, Google Compute Engine, Microsoft Azure, and others while ensuring that your messages and calls remain private and secure.

zaggynl··on Signal to leave Sweden if backdoor law passes
I question the use of an instant messaging service hosted in another country for your armed forces, is that a good idea, especially now?

As good as Signal is I mean, you will want something under your control.

zaggynl··on ZetaOffice: LibreOffice in the Browser
Can you go into what you issues you saw?
zaggynl··on Windows 365 Link is a $349 mini PC that streams Windows from the cloud
Why can't we just do this with every modern mobile phone?
zaggynl··on Vaultwarden: Unofficial Bitwarden compatible server written in Rust
How does the Bitwarden client handle loss of connection to the Bitwarden or Vaultwarden server?

Last I checked the local cache is gone after so many days, leaving you without your credentials.

A combination of local password manager and a file sync service of your preference seems a good option as well.

zaggynl··on Bug hunting in Btrfs
For what it's worth, I'm happy with using Btrfs on OpenSUSE Tumbleweed and the provided tooling like snapper and restoring Btrfs snapshots from grub, saved me a few times.

SSD used: Samsung SSD 970 PRO 1T, same installation since 2020-05-02.

zaggynl··on Dissent – A GTK4 Discord client written in Go
Is there a list of features that Revolt has? I was unable to find this on their website or at a glance at their Github page.
zaggynl··on He blew the whistle on Amazon. He's still paying the price
I would assume the people working in the Chinese factory have _some_ time off to go outside said factory? Or have the ability to turn in their notice and leave for a different job?

Agreed on the fact that both seem like a corporate hellhole one way or the other.

zaggynl··on He blew the whistle on Amazon. He's still paying the price
Whataboutism and you're comparing a factory to a prison.
zaggynl··on Show HN: Clone someone and talk to them like in real life
These Black Mirror episodes come to mind:

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Be_Right_Back A woman gets a clone of her deceased husband

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Joan_Is_Awful A woman gets replaced by another woman

zaggynl··on Bethesda's Starfield is a disgrace to game development and a slap in the face t
Disclaimer: have not played Starfield yet, still on Baldur's Gate 3.

>The game suffers an endless amount of video and audio stuttering issues unless you run it from an SSD or an NVMe

The recommended MINIMUM requirement for storage is to use an SSD, per https://store.steampowered.com/app/1716740/Starfield/ :

System Requirements

    Minimum:
        OS: Windows 10 version 21H1 (10.0.19043)
Processor: AMD Ryzen 5 2600X, Intel Core i7-6800K
        Memory: 16 GB RAM
Graphics: AMD Radeon RX 5700, NVIDIA GeForce 1070 Ti
        DirectX: Version 12
        Storage: 125 GB available space
        Additional Notes: SSD Required

My previous PC had an SSD, I would rather not go back to running my OS/applications from a HDD.

That said, ensuring your games run on minimal hardware goes a long way, Blizzard does/did this for their games.

zaggynl··on AMD Open-Source GPU Kernel Driver Above 5M Lines, Entire Linux Kernel at 34.8M
>as opposed to crashing the whole system

Depending on your definition of 'the whole system' this is not entirely true.

The AMD driver for example will reset the GPU and force a xorg restart: https://paste.debian.net/plain/1290344

Now this does mean all desktop applications don't close properly, so I restart the PC to a 100% sure stability is at 100%, it didn't cause a kernel panic like the GPU crash would do previously.

I've had this crash happen only twice in ~90 hours of play time.

GPU: 5700XT

Driver: Mesa 23.1.5

zaggynl··on Get your staff's consent before you monitor them, tech inquiry warns
Do you enforce any security for the PC used to connect to the virtual desktop? Thinking of possible keylogging, possible mitm when connecting to the virtual desktop, a RAT on the PC used.
zaggynl··on Google is already pushing WEI into Chromium
Have at it: https://european-union.europa.eu/contact-eu/write-us_en

I'm having trouble grasping how WEI works, providing examples of what would and could happen and what to ask/tell the EU specifically.

From my limited understanding it would mean the lockout of people with non-compliant hardware/software, greatly increase the fingerprinting of web browser users and further vendor lock in to Google as a company?

zaggynl··on Ask HN: Is anyone hosting their own Jitsi server?
Yes! jitsi.zaggy.nl

For adhoc gaming sessions, family chat during corona.

Disabled audio activity indicator(?) to severely reduce client CPU usage.

zaggynl··on Steam Deck: First Anniversary
You can setup a VPN through desktop mode.

I've put together a howto for wireguard: https://zaggy.nl/nextcloud/s/yGW9SinMCoWcNZN

It's no turnkey solution, you can probably find an easier howto for popular VPN services and wireguard.

Personally I've been using the jellyfin client on my steam deck, which works well, add the dock and you have a home media machine.

zaggynl··on Legacy Update: Fix Windows Update on Windows XP, Vista, Server 2008, 2003, 2000
Neat, could one combine this with https://download.wsusoffline.net/ ?

zaggynl··on The Making of Dune II: The birth of the real-time strategy game
I've briefly tried Emperor: Battle for Dune via Linux with Lutris, this seems to work well.
zaggynl··on I help seniors with technology issues
That's fair, I would recommend a MacBook, Chromebook or iPad to senior folks, even though I loathe the companies, they're perfectly fine for those who do not want to tinker.
