zaggynl··on I help seniors with technology issues
I would immediately reinstall a just bought laptop from scratch, as in through a Windows/Linux ISO, not through their own recovery, especially from Lenovo, they have been caught with Superfish adware/malware before:

Yeah it's awesome, if only nomachine(https://www.nomachine.com/, MS Remote Desktop alternative) would add support for it, that or I missed something to get it to work.
zaggynl··on Element Matrix Services Announces Element Home
The terms of service are interesting:

> This agreement does not apply to Matrix servers run by anyone else - Matrix is an open network like the Web and this agreement only applies to the server provisioned by the Customer and provided by Element.

What do other Matrix servers matter to my hypothetical Element Home server or my selfhosted matrix-synapse server?

>The Customer must ensure that all Authorised Users are at least 16 (sixteen) years old to use both our Hosting and Communication Services or such greater age required in their country to register for or use our Hosting and Communication Services.

So no using it with your younger family or school for example?

I appreciate a service being offered but would prefer a solution that enables an out of the box package for self hosted consumer NAS systems. Maybe something to provide dyndns, a domain and a quick setup.

Technically, yes, but you'll be limited to people connecting to your own Signal server from what I've read.

zaggynl··on Poll: Switching from WhatsApp
matrix-synapse(server) suffers from performance issues[1], dendrite[2], the replacement should be resolving that but is currently in beta.

Apart from that it integrates fairly well with other networks through bridges.[3]

It can be self hosted and it federates, which is a pro. Not too sure about audits and security, it has improved much, when I started using it (2019) they didn't have login throttling[4] and shortly after that were breached.[5] Much has improved since.

zaggynl··on Linux Desktop Setup
Cool setup, being able to mold your Linux desktop into what you need is a good thing!

I'm happy on Ubuntu LTS with a couple PPAs for latest mesa and some other applications.

More recreational though, gaming through Steam's Proton or Lutris, big thanks to Valve for sponsoring wine, dxvk an various other bits and pieces!

Clickbait.
zaggynl··on Completely Silent Computer
Since Linux 4.15, AMD GPU support is in kernel, can't say the same for Nvidia. That said, Nvidia's proprietary drivers still do better than AMD's drivers.
zaggynl··on OpenBazaar 2.0, powered by IPFS
Send me a DMCA request, I'll take them offline, like Google and other websites do.

Does OpenBazaar do this? Probably not.

Are all these people anonymous on IPFS?

Probably somewhat because they're behind VPNs or proxies, at least that's what I hope they do if they're offering things like above.

Will this stop law enforcement?

No, it will not: https://www.theregister.co.uk/2017/10/08/vpn_logs_helped_unm...

zaggynl··on Disabling the Intel Management Engine
In short, the Intel Management Engine and AMD Platform Security Processor, which are on many motherboards, allow for remote power on and remote control of a PC if connected to Ethernet, are closed source and have known vulnerabilities.[1] This website has a more elaborate explanation: https://libreboot.org/faq.html#intel [1]: https://www.intel.com/content/www/us/en/architecture-and-tec...

zaggynl··on A tiny PC as a router
Based on SUSE/openSUSE I think, their manual/wiki mentions selecting SUSE/openSUSE when creating a VM for Sophos UTM.
zaggynl··on A tiny PC as a router
Those tiny PCs are nice for projects like this, I use a Jetway JBC373F38-525-B with Sophos UTM.

Why not using anything with a GUI like pfsense or Sophos UTM?

zaggynl··on LXQt 0.11 Released

zaggynl··on Ubuntu LTS updating failing all over the world
This is why you wait for a service pack or point release before using a new version of an OS.
