zackkatz··on Show HN: Shepherd.com – Discover books in a new way, like wandering a bookstore
Seconded. Very easy to read!

I’m also impressed by the speed of the site. Well done!

One thing book stores have is gifts for people. “Someone who wants a book about dream interpretation may enjoy a rare minerals Rubin’s cube” may be a good way to increase your average referral fee.

And don’t forget cards and stationary!

You’ve got the layout down. Now I want to see more of the other items I see when browsing a bookstore!

zackkatz··on Should journals pay peer reviewes?
There’s, ironically, a typo in the title. Should be `reviewers`.
zackkatz··on High Short Interest Stocks
There are Wall Street traders, not just guys.
zackkatz··on More than 73% of American adults are overweight or obese
Yeah I came here to say the same thing.

I’m 6’8” and if I were within the suggested range, I would be 227 pounds. I’ve been that weight and when I look at pictures of myself at that weight, I always think I look dangerously thin.

BMI is a far too simple a measure to be helpful.

zackkatz··on I sold Baremetrics
Agreed. Why on earth would investors agree to not getting their money back?

Did they get anything? It doesn’t sound like it.

What are we missing here?

zackkatz··on New political polarization casts rivals as alien, unlikable, contemptible
My wife wrote a paper about this phenomenon. This happens in specific policy contexts as well as generally.

In political science, the phenomenon is called the “devil shift”, coined by Sabatier. Similarly, there is also the “angel shift”: you see people who agree with you as having more virtuous motivations.

My wife, Dr. Juniper Katz, wrote about these shifts in the fracking context: https://www.academia.edu/37275520/The_Space_Between_Demoniza...

zackkatz··on A Little Money Laundering Can Have a Big Impact on Real Estate Prices (2019)
Anecdotally, this happened in Denver when marijuana was legalized. Since the pot shops couldn’t store money with banks, many bought homes with cash. This led to a huge increase in cash buyers and a major spike in prices.
zackkatz··on The Native-American Origins of Gumbo
Do be aware: sassafras has mild carcinogenic properties.

> Sassafras is classified as a carcinogenic substance. It caused liver cancer in laboratory animals. The risk of developing cancer increases with the amount consumed and duration of consumption.

zackkatz··on Foiling Electric Boat
The video reports they have delivered 12. Not exactly producing at scale!
zackkatz··on IBM looking for 12 years’ experience in Kubernetes administration
This sounds like a terrible experience for the recruiter.

I suggest re-examining the response you had based on understandings of gender issues in tech.

zackkatz··on Can electric cars on the highway emulate plane-to-plane refueling?
This reminds me of old Popular Science magazines promising a future of unrealized technology.

I do not think this is the future. But it’s something I’d like to see in a sci-fi movie.

zackkatz··on Alcoholics Anonymous vs. other approaches: the evidence is now in
I find it frustrating that the subheading says “less expensive.” No, it’s FREE. Absolutely free. Donations optional.

To me, it sounded like the editor of the piece didn’t want it to sound promotional, which made it less true.

zackkatz··on Tell HN: Mailgun lowers free-tier API from 10k to 625 emails per month
We have used Mailgun to power our SaaS emails for years with great deliverability and without paying a cent. It makes sense for them to charge for their service. It was too good to last forever!
zackkatz··on Windows 10 Desktop: Physically building and photographing the logos (2015)
> with Picard and Munkowitz wife-swapping the teams to keep things moving and the team extra productive

There’s a way you could say the same thing without being weird. “Swapping” would have sufficed!

zackkatz··on Nunavut is the Largest Electoral District (2015)
The title should be updated to reflect the 2015 article date.
zackkatz··on Sir Rod Stewart reveals his epic model railway city
I had no idea Rod Stewart covered the Tom Waits song "Downtown Train".

I do not thank this article for informing me of this fact. It is a horrible cover. The world needs more Tom Waits and less Rod Stewart.

zackkatz··on 16-inch MacBook Pro
I’m frustrated by the 720p camera. That is not good enough quantity.
zackkatz··on Super Mario Bros. game was just 31 Kilobytes. How's that possible?
This article is from 2015. The title should reflect that.
zackkatz··on Free AI-generated headshots put stock photo companies on notice

zackkatz··on Dropbox no longer follows symlinks to items outside of your Dropbox account
https://www.arqbackup.com/ Works with a bunch of providers and is really solid.
zackkatz··on During the Renaissance, the beard was the defining feature of a man
This article has the Renaissance in its title, but then continues to discuss the Elizabethan period. Shakespeare != Renaissance.
zackkatz··on Apple expands parts access to more independent repair businesses
Title should be updated to say what is happening: Apple launches Independent Repair Provider program
zackkatz··on Preindustrial workers worked fewer hours than today's (2009)
Than we.
zackkatz··on The Robot economy and the future of work
This article is from 2105. The title should be updated to reflect that.
zackkatz··on Was Email a Mistake?
This title is clickbaity. The article asks whether replacing meetings with async digital messaging was an improvement.

[edit:] I suggest modifying the headline. Perhaps to something like: “Was Email an Improvement Over In-Person Meetings?”

zackkatz··on The Artistry of China’s Ivory Puzzle Balls
Really beautiful pieces. Unfortunately, the article doesn’t give any details as to their creation. Just check out the pictures.
zackkatz··on A 'Blockchain Bandit' Is Guessing Private Keys and Scoring Millions
Enlightened arrogance is one thing. Being aware of—and addressing—bias in articles is another.

“They” doesn’t cost anyone anything. It’s not a new word. It’s gender-neutral. It’s an easy win, and a change worth making.

zackkatz··on A 'Blockchain Bandit' Is Guessing Private Keys and Scoring Millions
So use those stats in the story and back up why the author assumes it’s a man.

Assumptions blind you to reality, however.

Even worse: This article perpetuates the gender disparity in tech you reference.

zackkatz··on A 'Blockchain Bandit' Is Guessing Private Keys and Scoring Millions
It does change the story. “He” excludes 50% of potential perpetrators. Using “they” does not.
zackkatz··on Web Design 3.0: When Your Web Design Matters
This article appears to be written in order to rank in search engines for the phrase "Web Design 3.0" and to have people use a phrase they already rank well for.
