zachguo··on Johns Hopkins CSSE Covid-19 Global Case Dashboard
Instead of the accumulated total, a better metric for showing trends is the number of daily new cases, it shows whether the infection is accelerating or not.

Thanks for sharing, color coding used by this map is clearer than circles with different radii.
zachguo··on 10% of Covid patients in intensive care unit
If they faked the data, they would downplay it just like other bureaucracies who don't want to hurt the economy. The key is speed. As long as extensive tests and quick actions have been done, and hospitals are not overwhelmed, then there shouldn't be big problems. KR and JP will be fine.
zachguo··on “Let’s use Kubernetes.” Now you have eight problems
For our team with many containers scattered around ElasticBeanstalk and ECS, K8S makes everything much cleaner.
zachguo··on Coronavirus may have spread undetected in US for weeks
They f*ed up. But I don't understand why they refused to use the testing kits provided by WHO.

zachguo··on Officials: Dozens at WA nursing facility show possible coronavirus symptoms
This is accumulated stats, please include the number of active cases too.

And the most of the accumulated cases are from Hubei. I agree the quarantine seems to be effective.

zachguo··on WHO: COVID-19 in 29 countries last Monday, now 56
That's because the US CDC produced defective test kits and hasn't done enough testing. A tiny nation like SK has tested 30k people while the US has only tested 450+(and each kit costs a patient $3k while it's free or cheap in other countries).

The scientific facts are simple and clear. R0 is between 2 and 3, fatality rate is around 1%.

Even if it's not containable, actions should be taken to buy us more time before an effective vaccine is produced.

zachguo··on The Korean Clusters: How coronavirus cases exploded in Korean churches/hospitals
You sound just like this super spreader missionary who shouted "It's not a big deal, we are all going to heaven."
zachguo··on WHO: COVID-19 in 29 countries last Monday, now 56
Once the hospitals are overloaded, fatality would be way higher. In China, fatality rate in the epicenter Hubei province is more than 4%, while it's less than 1% for the rest of the provinces.
zachguo··on Second U.S. coronavirus case of unknown origin confirmed in Santa Clara County
The latest guidelines published by the Chinese CDC claimed so too, a CT scan is required, and RT-PCR tests have to be applied multiple times before claiming a patient is cured.
zachguo··on Second U.S. coronavirus case of unknown origin confirmed in Santa Clara County
Droplets contaminated public surfaces like door handles, elevator buttons, etc, and one person normally touches his/her face hundreds of times per day.
zachguo··on Coronavirus 3 Day Prediction
This is crap. Data is outdated and off, the assumption of an exponential curve is way too simplistic.
zachguo··on U.S. opens a national security review of TikTok’s acquisition of Musical.ly
It will be forced to sell to US entities, like Alstom and Samsung.
zachguo··on Data Dictatorships: The Arms Race to Hack Humankind
Two biggest weaknesses of centralized political systems are 1) incompetent leadership 2) the principal-agent problem.

Better data collection and monitoring alleviate both weaknesses and prolong such system's longevity.

zachguo··on The Global Fertility Crash
If the world economy crashed, we may go back to 40s.
zachguo··on Notepad++ repository is being spammed after “Free Uyghur” release
I'm still optimistic and patient. But the democracy won't be in the exact form as the ones stemmed from Greek traditions.
zachguo··on Spanish government orders GitHub to take down Tsunami Democràtic repository
Indeed, if a democratic and free country with the rule of law can act like this, what are you expecting from authoritarian regimes?
zachguo··on How China is using QR codes
Another good use case of QR codes is to log in or sign up services on TVs and laptops. Scan once, then it's done. You don't need to enter the activation URL on another device or use any password manager.
zachguo··on How China is using QR codes
Whenever a new technology matures, people would create a bunch of nonsense products anyway. Remember radium condoms? https://gizmodo.com/once-upon-a-time-we-used-radium-condoms-...
zachguo··on Dissent at Facebook over hands-off stance on political ads
Why would people be willing to give up their fundamental rights so easily. Isn't free speech mainly about invalidating what is false or immoral through discourse?
zachguo··on U.S. Seeks to Heighten Scrutiny of Foreign Investment in Tech, Infra, Data
They tried but failed. Now, most are done through NED and psyops, and it's pretty successful in terms of media manipulation.
zachguo··on Patents are about sharing information – don't shroud them in secrecy
Also people in tech companies get bonus if they file patents.
zachguo··on Teen designs Hong Kong-inspired shoe only to have it dropped from Vans contest
Paradoxically the older generation who has lived under British rule generally favors CCP ruling more while those young protesters largely haven't lived under British rule.
zachguo··on Lawmakers ask US intelligence chief to investigate TikTok
Nah, those are just some crappy sites made from copy-n-pasting source code from everywhere.
zachguo··on Facebook isn’t free speech, it’s algorithmic amplification optimized for outrage
Sounds like how people argue against printing press in 15th century.

zachguo··on Taiwan managed to build high-speed rail. Why can't California?
1. It resulted from the era of rapid economic growth.

2. East Asian countries generally value the greater good for all more.

3. There was no stereotype against train travel, and having HSRs was generally considered as a national pride.

Nowadays, it's also difficult to do any large scale infrastructure project in Taiwan, because the economy stagnates and the two-party political system is kinda gridlocked .

zachguo··on Mark Zuckerberg still doesn't get it
Polarization and misinformation are inherent flaws of free speech, the advents of cable TVs and internet only amplified them.

But you don't need to act like the Politburo of the Communist Party to fix them. There may be solutions without fundamentally underming the value.

How about teaching kids critical thinking and how to differentiate misinformation in schools? https://www.weforum.org/agenda/2019/05/how-finland-is-fighti...

zachguo··on A Million People Are Jailed at China's Gulags. Here's What Goes on Inside
I didn't claim WUC is a terrorist org, but it has a clear separatism agenda, which aligns with ETIM's goal even if there's no verifiable link between them. Personally I'm skeptical, considering how rampant misinformation is nowadays.
zachguo··on A Million People Are Jailed at China's Gulags. Here's What Goes on Inside
This has actually gained mass coverage recently given the current geopolitical atmosphere. However, I would take this with a grain of salt. If you do a bit of research, you will find the claim was made by people related to the East Turkestan Islamic Movement[1](a terrorist organization linked to Al-Qaeda) and the World Uyghur Congress.

zachguo··on Facebook and Speech
TBH, as a Chinese expat, all these utilitarian arguments give me Deja Vu of how the Chinese government defended GFW.
