yubrew··on Just launched! Asking for news.yc feedback.
LLC's protect against individual liability, unless if they were doing something illegal. There are other holes that make LLC's and other corporate entities much less bulletproof than commonly believed.
yubrew··on Just launched! Asking for news.yc feedback.
This would go directly against one of the statements and some of the company policies stated on the website. On the 'Learn More' page,

"At PikLuk, we value your privacy and that of your children. To that end, we: Do not market to your children."

yubrew··on James Hong: On going (NOT) Free...
Something sounds fishy:

"Every dating site i know and talk to tells me they are dealing with the same issue. Markus at plentyoffish seems to be doing a good job of fighting it, but tells me it gets harder and harder every month to maintain."

If Markus can deal with it as a one man team, how does James and his crew of hackers not have the resources to figure it out?

yubrew··on Did you ever wish you had a mentor to guide you?
I am not sure if this is a service people need. The people that need mentors the most probably refuse to get them. People that know they need mentors and actively seek them out eventually find them.

Also, you're talking about a small segment of a small niche numbers-wise. Of all the people in the US, only a portion are entrepreneurs or business owners. Of that segment, only a portion are actually successful and will actually be good mentors. Also, how will you qualify the quality of the mentee? No one wants to waste their time, especially if you already have several mentees.

yubrew··on Food Ideas for Startup Guys
I use a cast iron wok, and for oils, i use peanut, corn, vegetable in that order of preference.
yubrew··on Food Ideas for Startup Guys
Stir fry meat: Cut and Marinade meat (chicken, beef, pork) in soy sauce, corn starch, pepper for about 10 minutes. Add meat into a hot (8-9) wok, and start stirring. Add onions, pepper, mushrooms or any other supporting vegetable for enhanced flavor. Continue stirring over a 8-9 flame for about 10 minutes. Turn everything off, and dump your concoction over rice.

Grilled Chicken: Add spice to both sides of a chicken breast. Different spices I've used are Old Bay, salt & pepper, soy sauce, Spike. Put the meat into a Foreman grill, and cook for about 7 minutes, depending on the thickness of the chicken breast. Serve with noodles or rice.

Stir fry vegetables: Clean and Chop said vegetable. This works for napa, spinach, celery, string beans, zucchini, snap peas, etc. Cook on 6-7 flame. Add salt, oil, chopped garlic, dried shrimp to the wok. Add vegetables. Stir occasionally, and add a bit of water in the beginning to make sure the vegetables do not burn.

If you have two woks, or one wok and one grill, you can cook the meat and vegetables at the same time, and be done and eating in about 20 minutes.

yubrew··on Black Plague and HIV resistance in Europe
Credibility is a large hurdle you will need to overcome. No one will want to talk to you unless you have some big names backing up your research, and patents showing that you control the IP. In the science world, so much data is produced that the signal to noise ratio is high, and recognized scientists are extremely valuable. In other words, you will need to collaborate with academia, and it's probably better now than later. I suggest pitching your idea to senior faculty in different universities, especially ones focused in doing HIV stem cell research. Or perhaps working at someone's lab and setting up a collaboration with them. From what I understand, grant committees look at the name first, and then project second.

Salaries alone are nothing in the sciences, but it is expensive to set up your own lab, and could take years before you have validated that your thing actually works. For developing diagnostics, I bet there is someone trying to make a drug or therapy from CCR5. Collaborate with them and make the diagnostic part.

I know that at Johns Hopkins, anything you develop as an undergrad is 100% owned by you. Check the IP rights of other schools by talking to their tech transfer offices, and maybe consider transferring to another school.

Get someone reputable behind you, and then you guys can actually start doing something.

yubrew··on Startup idea list
I thought this was the basic premise for meetup.com ?
yubrew··on Cost of Living
Cooking for yourself definitely saves time. Are you counting travel time and time spent waiting in line? But it does take slightly more effort, and require the right tools.

You can always stick to the basics. Ramen takes ~10 minutes for boiling water and clean up. Chicken breast takes 2 minutes to season, 14 minutes to cook and clean. Tuna takes no effort right out of the can. Boil or steam vegetables for about 5 to 10 minutes. Rice or oatmeal are cheap sources for carbs.

With these ingredients, you can eat well for under $10 / day where I live (Providence, RI). Just make sure you invest in a good spice rack.

yubrew··on Cost of Living
If you are on a budget, one of the first things to cut is extraneous expenses. By cooking for yourself, you can have the possibility of better tasting and more nutritious meals, lowering your food budget, and saving time.

Why spend $12 on panera when you can make a chicken breast sandwich for $4?

yubrew··on Sunday's Solutions
This is a good way of identifying problems, but unless it is for a problem hackers can identify with, we may not be the best people to suggest solutions. Ask the people that are most frustrated with that problem, that need to deal with it most frequently about how important it is, and potential solutions you are thinking about.

yubrew··on Larry Page, Sergey Brin, Jeff Bezos credit Montessori education as a major factor in their success
Could this site be the result of a poorly paid PR firm for Montessori?
yubrew··on Oh the Irony
You are misinterpreting that statement. What they are referring to in the above quotation is when search results are altered due to change in advertiser dollars. Kind of like when Yahoo used to have top advertiser links above the normal search results, and undifferentiated from the content.

Google, as a result, made a separate, distinct location for advertisement links. Because they separated the location of advertisements from the search results, they preserved the integrity of the search results.

This structure has not changed, as you can clearly see sponsored links are separated from search results: http://www.google.com/search?hl=en&q=pizza

yubrew··on Deadpool: Five Stupidest Startups of the Summer
I hear good things about Doostang. They appear to be a good source for finance/VC/private equity/hedge fund jobs. Not sure where it goes from there though.
yubrew··on How to Know You Have Found a Great Startup Lawyer
I don't agree with this guy's advice. There are more than 1,000,000 lawyers in the US,[0] a bunch that want your money, but only a few that know what their doing with tech start ups. A good heuristic when developing a good start up support team is to use whoever everyone else successful is using that also passes the gut check. Same goes for accountants, VCs, etc.

yubrew··on The Harlem Project
Because of the upstart of two articles on education, this article may be a relevant means to help stop the systematic failure of education for the poor.
yubrew··on devHouse in Cambridge, Sept 16th
We had a lot of fun at the last devHouse, so join us and help make this into a fun, monthly event. Hack out your next idea, work on a cool side project, meet like minded people.

We need help spreading the word to college campuses, and getting sponsors for food/drinks.

If you're interested in helping out, let me know, johnyu2@gmail.com

yubrew··on This patent application seems coherent. Then, a dedication to 50 Cent. Then...
20070156594 - This number refers to a published patent application, which does not mean that a patent has been granted.

I have a 98% confidence rating that you can only enforce rights from issued patents. An application means that it has a chance of being issued, but normally does not have much value until it is actually granted.

When a patent has been granted, you'll see a number similar to this "5,146,634 6923014 0000001" http://patft.uspto.gov/netahtml/PTO/srchnum.htm

yubrew··on On Pricing Strategy
I would like to add that "3. Observe" can get complicated. Initially, the metric to "Observe" should be how many people buy it. Then you can look at total revenues generated at $D price, total sales generated per customer at $D price, etc.
yubrew··on On Pricing Strategy
I have dealt with this problem before. Even if you are a first mover, you will still have indirect competitors, and customers used to paying a certain price and buying at a certain frequency. Talk to your customers, find out how they are consuming, and position your product accordingly.

Really Basic Example: A skype based cell phone should be priced similarly to comparable phones, with a premium because skype is cheaper than other cell phone plans.

For web products, one trick I learned is to use Google Adwords with different prices and features listed, and observe CTR.

yubrew··on Where is your startup? (for me Atlanta)
I am also in Providence.
yubrew··on Best drop-in forum software?
http://www.forummatrix.org/ is a good source for comparing different forum software.
yubrew··on Tandem Entrepreneurs -- seed investors
It would be nice to know more about their portfolio, such as the companies that have gotten funding from them and achieved a liquidity event.
yubrew··on A Guide to Hiring Programmers: The High Cost of Low Quality
I downmodded you because this sounds like an advertisement for GeniTeam without any meaningful value proposition for the members of this community. You (and your website) don't clearly state why start ups should use your services and justify those claims.

Also, your website is confusing. You have a bunch of web 2.0 buzz words on the left, but clicking on the words do not do anything. The drop down menu navigation on the right for sections 01 to 08 add friction to my user experience. After reading the copy above the fold, my main objection still is not answered: "Why should I trust GeniTeam to recruit and manage my engineers?"

I hope you take these critiques to heart, and contribute some valuable, well thought out posts in the future.

yubrew··on [New YC startup] Listen To Your Music anywhere on the web with Anywhere.FM
One of the techcrunch comments said that the itunes UI is patented.[0] Any thoughts on this?

Anyways, it's very cool and useful. grats.

yubrew··on Reverse YC funding program. PG, what's your thought?
You're saying that you would help the marketing/sales guy outsource the programming, right? So how are you going to defend your product against anyone else that has $15k?
yubrew··on What podcasts can people recommend?
iinnovate.blogspot.com is pretty decent. I really like the one w/ Eric Schmidt.
yubrew··on I hate/luv my job social network
I think overhear.us is a place where you can bitch about your job, but doesn't offer any way to do anything about it. Rokhayakebe is suggesting to fix this problem via social networking.

I think the alternatives are the intact networks that people use to find new jobs (alumni, friends, professionals, head hunters). How will it compete with Facebook?

Right now on Facebook, I can search by employer of interest (e.g. Google, McKinsey, etc) and it will pop up the closest contacts by some sort of FoaF distance algorithm. I can friend them and message them to open up a dialogue.

yubrew··on Lookery, the Facebook advertising network...with lots of data
All new competitors have access to the ridiculous amount of data available to Facebook apps.

Is anyone else here interested in or working on a behavioral targeting project?

yubrew··on PG: Thinking of adding a search facility to news.yc?
There's also http://www.ycsearch.com which does a decent job.
