ytNumbers··on The fading American dream: Trends in absolute income mobility since 1940
It sounds to me like unequal outcomes carrying on from one generation to the next. Despite that, everyone has the opportunity to improve or worsen their situation in life.
ytNumbers··on The fading American dream: Trends in absolute income mobility since 1940
Equal opportunity. Not equal outcomes.
ytNumbers··on Why Your Dog Can Get Vaccinated Against Lyme Disease and You Can’t
How often do drugs get removed from the market by completely unjustified public outrage? I'm sure that all those people who complained after receiving the vaccine didn't really have horrible un-treatable lifelong consequences from it. Around the turn of the century, I worked with a guy who was foolish enough to agree to be vaccinated. He suffered greatly for it, and spent the rest of his days wishing that someone would invent a time machine.
ytNumbers··on I’ve started wiretapping my kid because he hates photos
It seems to me that as a parent of a child you are entitled to insist upon one nice photo of your child per year. Outside of that, you can make a request of your child for whatever kind of photos or audio recording that you like, but after your child declines such recording for the 3rd time, you must go one year without asking again. If you fail to follow these guidelines, you will likely one day be labeled a creepy parent. If you ever acquire that label, you'll wish you had a time machine, because there's no other way to remove that label.

There is only one thing in the world worse than being witty, and that is not being witty. I wish I hadn't said that.

The original count numbers are used. You're right that this rule undermines the recount's viability. Michigan (and other states) have a voting system where a single vote can be scanned in six times. It appears that we have an election system that was (and remains) easily rigged.

Can you explain to me why you feel that Rudy Guiliani is unqualified to be appointed US Attorney General?
ytNumbers··on Watch the Persuasion Battle
This was posted earlier today and got a few upvotes before being removed for likely being too political, or perhaps someone is right about the media being rigged.

ytNumbers··on Man sued for $30K over $40 printer he sold on Craigslist
This article has persuaded me to never sell anything on Craigslist. Okay, the odds of running into a troll are tiny, but for a few bucks, it's just not worth the risk. Maybe Craigslist and similar sites need to start offering some kind of free insurance policy against trolls.
ytNumbers··on New paper explains why the Universe ended up with three dimensions
The whole thing reminds me of Shakespeare's King Lear...

Fool: The reason there are only seven planets is a pretty reason.

Lear: Because there are not eight.

Fool: Indeed, sire, thou would'st make a good Fool.

Why take the content down after only five days? Five months or five years would seem more reasonable.

Since you're smart enough to have worked for Google, I think lots of big and small companies would be willing to hire you. It's a shame you made a mistake, but learn from the mistake, and then focus on your very bright future. You've achieved great things, and I think you'll continue to be successful in life.
ytNumbers··on Ask HN: When should you quit?
Take a six month break from computers and the Internet. If you absolutely must, you can check your e-mail once a week, but no further tech than that. During those six months you can vacation (if you saved up some money during your years of coding), or, if you need money to get by, you could work some menial job. After six months, if you feel up to it, you could decide to return to the field of software development. However, I hope you'll resolve to never again work as a software developer for peanuts. It's mentally taxing work that ought to provide you with plenty of money.
ytNumbers··on Harry Markopolos: Ponzi scheme bigger than Madoff
There was no FDIC insurance because Bernie's ponzi scheme was not a bank. For this 64 billion dollar fraud, less than 5% of the money been returned to victims.

ytNumbers··on Why Explore Space (1970)
This question remains relevant today. Perhaps the best answer to this question is that having a space program is actually a cheap insurance policy against a civilization ending asteroid killing more than 99% of the world's population.

Thank you for that link. It was enlightening in ways I didn't expect. For example, I had no idea that airbnb was so broken:

"You'll notice that nearly all the reviews of places to stay on AirBnB are positive. Why? Because if you post a negative review, the host is likely to post a negative review about you in retaliation. And once you have a negative review as a guest, nobody will rent to you."

Looks like it only takes 66 years for science fiction movies to become reality. The Batman and Robin movie serials of 1949 had an evil villain who had the technology to take control of all vehicles within a 50 mile radius. Today, we're darn close to Doctor Evil going worldwide with this. Where's Batman and Robin when you need them?

ytNumbers··on Depression and feeling like an outsider
Generally speaking, tech groups are not as friendly as non-tech groups. I'd recommend getting involved with some non-tech groups. There are so many worthy causes to volunteer for. And, if that's not your thing, there are plenty of groups that are all about having fun. In any case, don't rush to judgement on any group. I've found that if you show up enough times to a group's events, then you will be seen as a "regular", and that means many people in the group will be much friendlier towards you. I'm suggesting that you try lots of things, and don't rush to any conclusions. There have been plenty of instances in my life where I thought about quitting an activity, and today I'm so glad I didn't. Our world contains people who are able to climb Mount Everest. You might be shocked to find out how vast your capabilities really are.
