youngbullind··on Ask HN: Did you change jobs during the Great Reshuffling and regret it?
It's nothing new. People have always changed jobs. And people who change every two years end up with 50% better salaries over time. If you haven't added enough value in those two years to make it worth hiring you in the first place, then you probably weren't a great hire in the first place.

Sounds like it was mostly word of mouth

180 days of sumero-akkadian cuneiform, in which I find out stuff about ancient clay tablets, write about it, and ponder on whether the next 180 days should be spent on something more useful...

Yeah, it's not been going too well for him since 1900.
youngbullind··on Ask HN: Whats the best alternative to Inbox?
I receive mail in English, Spanish - and occasionally French - and I've been so impressed by the categorisation, and even auto-reply suggestions in both English and Spanish (too small a sample to say on the auto-replies with French). Maybe there are other languages it's not hot with, but these at least I'm happy with. On the plus side, this is a feature that's made it to Gmail already, so if they can handle hiding non-critical messages till the morning, I'll be happy to switch back.

You are a gas generator. I'd hope it's not so voluminous or noxious that you require regulation
youngbullind··on Emissions of banned, ozone-depleting chemical CFC-11 have climbed 25% since 2012
And get it up to the ozone layer, because at ground level it's a pollutant which causes lung damage.
youngbullind··on Ask HN: Is working on online casinos unethical?
It wouldn't surprise me in the least, given the prevalence of the use of each in society.
youngbullind··on Fake News Hysteria Just Creates More Uncertainty in What Truth Really Is
> replaces the phrases "real-life fanfic" and "real-life fanfic" with the phrase "real-life fanfic."

Seems a little redundant

Such a good film.
youngbullind··on Long-time Iowa farm cartoonist fired after creating this cartoon
The important part of that being the alt-text: "I can't remember where I heard this, but someone once said that defending a position by citing free speech is sort of the ultimate concession; you're saying that the most compelling thing you can say for your position is that it's not literally illegal to express."

Completely without source and no breakdown, but I read recently that their margins are in the 20-30% range.

I missed it.
youngbullind··on Animating geographical spread and trends of drug overdose in USA 1999 – 2014
I think the biggest change in that timeframe will be in whiter counties with the increase in prescription drug ODs. It would be interesting to see it broken down by drug type too.

Retry it. It took a couple of attempts to load for me.

youngbullind··on Why expat Americans are giving up their passports
This affects my girlfriend. She has a dual passport but only lived in the US to the age of six months. We are are British but live in Spain which already makes for complex tax arrangements, and this on top of things is just crazy. How the hell does the US think it has the right to tax people who haven't lived there for over 30 years?
