yolkedgeek··on "We Have to Assume That the Internet Will Go Offline in the Next Few Years"
What the fuck did I just read?

What an absolute idiotic mishmash of words to throw up.

All remote jobs will be replaced for 2$/hour in 2 years? And then what? We all die and now only 3 companies control all the labor in the world and will hike up their prices to 1000$/h eventually?

What can even be the motive of saying such things if not for profit only?

yolkedgeek··on Use Task Runners for Common Coding Tasks
Let me also recommend babashka and it's task runner too!

If my tasks are simple enough, bash or make will do but for serious projects, specially lispy ones, babashka is amazing.

yolkedgeek··on Astro 7.0
I like the idea of astro, but never really used it. My main concern is. Does v7 mean that there have been 7 breaking changes thus far? So if I started my project on v1, I had to revise it 6 times to date?

If yes, then this instability is a serious concern to me.

yolkedgeek··on Bashblog – a single bash script to create blogs
What? That's how open source works
yolkedgeek··on Emacs, how it all started for me
I really, really wish we can focus on schemacs so we have a scheme based emacs. 1. Scheme is much much nicer and more powerful than elisp 2. More speed and multi threading 3. (i think) better extensibility

yolkedgeek··on Conventional Commits encourages focus on the wrong things
Sidenote: Although JSON is very common, I argue EDN is the best data format out there.
yolkedgeek··on Why Janet? (2023)
True. But for things that they all can do, normal scripting (replacing bash/powershell, etc.), creating CLI and TUI apps, I would like to do a comparison of them. 1. which one is more pleasant to write 2. which one has the better echo system and tooling 3. performance benchmarks 4. portability
yolkedgeek··on My thoughts after using Clojure for about a month
Jobs and market have a huge factor of 1. politics 2. synergy

Almost the only reason that python is popular and people do everything with it is synergy. The only reason that javascript is eating the world and any web dev has to know it, and people do everything with it is synergy.

A big reason for C# to have popularity is because it's for Microsoft (politics).

These are just some examples. Being used doesn't mean anything.

There were and still are a ton of PHP jobs. You tell me, is it because PHP is a great language and solves our problems? No, because it has synergy.

If you're good enough, you can pretty much choose what language/framework you work in.

yolkedgeek··on Why Janet? (2023)
This is a great comparison and I've been wondering about it for a while.

Between babashka, janet(i discovered it just now), fennel, guile. Which one would be a better scripting language? Please tell me you experience, and if you are interested, we can work on a small article and benchmark about this.

yolkedgeek··on Iranian Students Protest as Anger Grows
> Ali Shariati, Ahmed Fardid, and Jalal Al-e-Ahmad - the three pillars of modern Iranian philosophy and culture

This just shows how bad the situation for our philosophy and culture have become in the last century...

I really wouldn't call these charlatans "pillars of modern Iranian philosophy and culture"

yolkedgeek··on We Need Apocalypse-Proof Software
Hi, writer of the post here.

Love to hear your opinions and further guidance on this matter.

Also, if the website is not available, it's because of another blackout :)

yolkedgeek··on Julia
Am I too dumb? I literally understand none of this.
yolkedgeek··on Iran's internet blackout may become permanent, with access for elites only
No, This is different.

In "normal" filtering situations, we can connect to most VPNs and do our stuff. When blackouts like these happen, EVERYTHING is blocked. It gets almost impossible to connect to a VPN. They have advanced tech that detects and blocks all VPNS and proxies. The internet speed is also now at crawling speed so you really can't upload download anything.

Also, in each blackout, people find ways to work around the censorship. And each time, they detect them and patch them. We have almost ran out of ways to prevent the censorship now.

yolkedgeek··on Opus 4.5 is not the normal AI agent experience that I have had thus far
I really can't tell if this is satire or not
yolkedgeek··on Using e-ink tablet as monitor for Linux
Well this is no replacement for them! The monitors you mention are from 700$ (Dasung 13k is 750USD currently) up to 2000USD. This is an old tablet you maybe have lying around or can get for 200USD maybe?

And this is more than a monitor. the VNC provides you with an interface. you can use your tablet as the input device. and it's also portable.

yolkedgeek··on Using e-ink tablet as monitor for Linux
I don't know how to do what you are describing, but right now, the drawing is OK. it's not instantaneous but good enough for me, not creating artworks. just doodles and scribbles. I just don't look at the tablet screen for drawing. I only use it as an input because the refresh rate is low for this. but the VNC latency itself is not annoying (I would guesstimate ~0.2s), although I think there are ways to make VNC latency less.
yolkedgeek··on Using e-ink tablet as monitor for Linux
It's text on the E-ink screen mostly, be it in the browser, a plain text file, Logseq, Obsidian etc. But sometimes simple writing can be done too. I wouldn't suggest writing code because of the high latency.

Most of my work is reading rather than writing so when I want to read something I use the E-ink screen.

yolkedgeek··on Using e-ink tablet as monitor for Linux
I've been using this solution for about 4 days now. It's not meant to be used as your main monitor. I use it only when I want to read something I or someone else has written. I think it's also good for simple writing too. But if I try to use it as my main monitor, browsing the web, writing code, etc. it will become a real headache because of the latency.

One huge plus is that it isn't *just a monitor*. because of the VNC connection, I just pick up my tablet and roam around the office while reading something, even making tiny edits, It can be also used as a great drawpad. I use it to explain things to my coworkers, since drawing freehand diagrams, shapes and text isn't very easy with a mouse.

yolkedgeek··on Introducing stronger dependencies on systemd
Read the news. That's why the maintainers forked it and are starting improvements on their own project.

yolkedgeek··on Introducing stronger dependencies on systemd
IBM bought Redhat, Redhat hires the devs for GNOME and hosts its infrastructure. IBM and Redhat where also the main founders of GNOME. They don't need to legally own GNOME. When most of the people working on systemD and GNOME are IBM employees, IBM makes the decisions. And GNOME is an IBM company.

https://wiki.gnome.org/RedHat https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/GNOME_Foundation

yolkedgeek··on Introducing stronger dependencies on systemd
We are not lawyers. I don't care what their "parent" company is legally. In practice, IBM influences and affects every single decision of these projects/companies. So yes, It is their parent company. Just look at what they were doing to X11. Holding it's development back just to monopolize wayland more.
yolkedgeek··on Introducing stronger dependencies on systemd
With systemD, the alternatives have a curve because so much IBM money and monopolization has gone into it. But systems using OpenRC(alpine) or SysV(MX linux, Devuan) work great in my experience. there are other init systems like runit (void linux) also seem to work great too, I just haven't used them.

As for desktop environments, the choice is very easy. Because there are simply better options. For normal users, I always suggest KDE Plasma or XFCE, Cosmic is still in development but looks very promising, cinnamon also looks great, but I don't use it (I know it's a gnome2 fork). But for power users, the choice of WMs are pretty trivial. i3, xmonad, qtile, niri, leftwm, etc.

The experience of using a WM instead of a full DE is incomparable for professional and power users. That is why I LOVE XFCE because it is modular. you can use parts of the XFCE ecosystem in any WM (power manager, theme manager, file manager etc.) or just replace xfce wm with your WM of choice (although I don't recommend this).

yolkedgeek··on Introducing stronger dependencies on systemd
They do have endless resources. They are an IBM company. If people choose to work for IBM without getting payed, that's kind of their problem.

yolkedgeek··on Show HN: Kan.bn – An open-source alterative to Trello
Why are people still building new projects with react and next.js? This is why we have 1000 trello alternatives.
yolkedgeek··on MIT asks arXiv to withdraw preprint of paper on AI and scientific discovery
So MIT is trying to tell us that there was no incentives, no VC money, no corruption involved here and just a naughty naughty PhD student?

This is how I see this: They published a false paper, knowing they would eventually be caught. But the boost that the paper had in AI marketcap and market bullishness and hype, far outweighs the consequences of this apology(not really) statement.

So they got a lot of money for hyping the AI, and now they pay off a small amount of it as backlash. still a huge net income. Pharma companies do this all the time. this is how they make money.

Reminder that if you link articles for your argument, doesn't necessarily mean that you are right. There are substantial amounts of false and slightly distorted papers and articles out there, even from the most valid publishers.

yolkedgeek··on Family of OpenAI whistleblower Suchir Balaji demand FBI investigate death
I can only imagine you being a "1st world" citizen for being this naive.

> "OpenAI somehow had access to hit men (!!)"

You think hitmen are only for movies?? Even much much smaller scale companies have people who sort out their problems. OpenAI is one of the biggest companies. Of course it has hitmen, connections with the police, FBI, CIA, NSA and whatever you can think of.

These companies (Boeing, OpenAI, Google, Microsoft) are sending a MESSAGE to the future whistleblowers. "You step on our tail, you're done" and they are making it as obvious as possible and you idiots still don't get the message?

You think these are some cute goofy nerds sitting and doing tech stuff and playing warcraft all day?

yolkedgeek··on Family of OpenAI whistleblower Suchir Balaji demand FBI investigate death
What the hell is wrong with peoples brains? Everyone in these comments are like "Oh not OpenAI wouldn't do that", "maybe he had mental health issues" Shut up please. How naive are you people?

Magically every whistleblower is dying and they all have mental health issues? God must hate whistleblowers then.

yolkedgeek··on Making a tic-tac-toe game with ‘randomness’ using pure HTML and CSS
we should not be throwing the word "random" around so loosely. this is pseudo randomness. The fact that it is only pseudo random should be mentiond in the writing.
