yogrish··on Ask HN: How does Facebook know what I buy on Amazon or vice versa?
I completely agree. I pity those PhD's using their Intellect for increasing Ad revenues to FB rather than creating/using algos to solve the pressing real-world problems - Diseases, Nutrition,Drought predictions,Curb terrorism etc. Are they even motivated by what they are doing..after all money is not everything (I agree FB pays a bomb).
yogrish··on Amazon's Leadership Principles
I feel this article from Ali Rowghani sums up Core Leadership principles. https://blog.ycombinator.com/how-do-you-measure-leadership/
yogrish··on Samsung’s biggest challenge now is Google software, not Apple hardware
Samsung had always been scared of google. They developed and are still developing androids replacement OS called TIZEN. It's a total crap OS and never able to catch up with android. Most tizen phones are unsold and are given to its employees as annual gift.Samsung RnD in India is the worst place to work for.My friend worked here It has worst culture in SW industry. They think spending 12-15 hrs bring good software. It's Highly unethical company. They want to transform to a SW company by conducting SW exams to engineers. But they miss the point that it has to change its DNA first from its Factory and copycat mindset to innovation/skill based mindset that lot of western companies like google/Facebook/apple exhibit.
yogrish··on Ask HN: How do you monetize from Patenting?
That's a really good info. Thank you.
yogrish··on Intel buying Mobileye for up to $16B to expand in self-driving tech
Lot of consolidation in Autonomous Driving(AD) market. Samsung bought Harman, Google buying waze etc. As Continental CEO puts it "Traditional OEM/suppliers want to go from inside to outside, traditional IT companies are moving from outside to inside" ..a car basically. To track AD market this could be of interest to you https://www.2025ad.com/
yogrish··on Box Breathing
Nice way to get into focus on breathing. Mind is like a monkey, it keeps wandering. Keep it busy by asking it to watch or focus on breathing. De-stress and bringing emotions under control are just starting point of meditation. The next stage is achieved when we can do "Balancing breath". Our guru calls it "Gayathri sthithi". In this stage, both of our breaths (left and right nostrils ) are balanced. In normal conditions, either your left ( Ida or moon nadi) or right nostril ( pingala or surya) only has the air flow, based on your body type. https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nadi_(yoga). When both the breaths are balanced, your sushumna Nadi is activated. This is when you could achieve Spiritual state and a fantastic experiences will unfold before your inner vision. I am yet to experience it.

Our Guru, With his tough practices of Kriya yoga and other meditating techniques, could achieve this state and He can get into this Gayathri state at any time. This is THE ultimate state to experience the Universal source of energy. This is where every soul came from and will get into.

As technologists we are materialistic and we are operating in lower dimension. The other dimension (spiritual), once opened/experienced, can answer any question in this universe. This is how RUSHIs and yogis could fathom universal truths with out any scientific tools, eons before our modern science.

yogrish··on Nokia 215
It certainly is targeting Indian market. Names and places in the Ad is Indian. Nokia still resonates with many Indians for its durability and Reliability. With Internet ready, it will for sure strike a chord with indians in low price segment and as back up phone.
yogrish··on ASMR: The videos which claim to make their viewers 'tingle'
Interesting. At home I give this sort of feeling to my son playfully. I go close to his ears and keep talking very slowly but with normal voice like " do you know one thing that...." And give a pause and again slowly taking deep breaths and blowing air... And suddenly I make slightly loud voice.

This whole thing give him experience of thorough tickling and GOOSEBUMPS. That shows how much tickling he felt. It's good fun and kids njoy this connection.

Though these videos gave me tingle, I didn't get goosebumps. But still it's good feel esp around my right ear and neck.

yogrish··on A Motion-Sensing Keyboard
For that matter even with Touch Screen, a gesture is extracted/identified by touch Algorithms (either in Touch controller or SoC). Only later, an action is taken. So there will defenitely be an inherent delay. These algos involve similar classification methods as mentioned in this demo.

yogrish··on A New Car UI: How touch screen controls in cars should really work
I feel its good concept and addresses current problem of UI in cars. Still, its not a permanent solution as User has to physically touch the screen which is still a distraction while driving. I feel permanent solution would be through a Voice activated controls where you have 360 Degree freedom for yourself. Till then this idea is very much usable for majority of People,Leaving few corner cases as you mentioned("People have a wide range of hand sizes, motor control skills, even number of fingers").

yogrish··on Mangalyaan, India’s First Mars Mission
Thanks JD. Good coverage on Mangalyan. For many Indians who are criticizing this Mission saying that the money would be better spent on toilets or teachers, this is an eye opener: Why Explore space http://launiusr.wordpress.com/2012/02/08/why-explore-space-a...

yogrish··on Open-Source Graphics Processor
Nice move. But some more details are missing. No where they mentioned about the GLSL compiler for shaders. Are they providing it or we need to develop our own?
yogrish··on The Story of Engineering Education in India
"we can expect a new technology that we don’t even have now to get outdated before our lifetime." Very well said and so true. People must Adapt in order to cope up. Probably online education programs (MIT/Coursera etc)play vital role here in learning new domains/skills and keep us going...
yogrish··on Apple's A7 is Made By Samsung
True to some extent. Fundamentally Samsung is a Diversified company but Apple is very Focussed. Samsung electronics itself is so massive that one branch of it(LSI), depends on Apple for its volume which can keep its Fab busy for years. But, its other branch(Mobile) competes with Apple phones though. Similarly Apple depends on sammy only for its proven Fab and competitive Prices. Guess TSMC is no where near Sammys Fab technology and lost Apples deal.

Btw, Samsung is so massive and diversified that it is into areas like Construction, Ship Building, Finance, Automobile, Retail. Its a very different company. It adapts to any domain, very fast. Few years back it became Top player in consumer electronics, last year it surpassed Apple in smart phones sales, had been a top player in Memory and tomorrow if space travel is the money spinner, it will be there.

You know Burj Khalifa, Taipei 101, Petronas are all built by Samsung ofcourse Samsung Engineering & Construction. So we need to mind which part of samsung we are talking about.

yogrish··on Starlite

yogrish··on New iOS designs
Ya, they are just different. But Cannot conclude that they are all better. Now that people got bored with old apple designs, these might look better. But I liked - "Fold to unlock and Contacts with Photos".
yogrish··on Diamonds Are Bullshit

yogrish··on I want the world to scroll this way
Overall I feel its a better scrolling. But, the page divider is an irritant more when the current page sentence and next page sentence are overlapping. I think he can try out soem blending operation to avoid this. Below page divider he can slightly blur few sentences and blend with next pages while you keep moving the divider down. Author can try out and check if it is appealing.
