I have MS from University of Florida and more than 13 years of work experience. I am currently enrolled in Georgia Tech online MS and have completed courses on Machine learning and Deep learning.

yogeshp··on Ask HN: What are your book buying habits?
I prefer books which have rating of at least 4.2 on Goodreads and 1000+ reviews. Higher the better.

Interval is sporadic. If I think it is urgent, then order it immediately, else keep in Amazon wish list and buy when there is a good discount or during sale. If physical copy of the book is expensive, then I consider kindle edition if kindle version is much cheaper.

yogeshp··on Ask HN: How to learn proper systems programming?
I will recommend that you go through Universities course pages on courses related to Operating Systems, Systems Programming, Computer Networks & Distributed Systems. Many of them have links to programming assignments and projects, try implementing those.

Advantages:

1. Problem will be well defined for you.

2. Better to implement eventual consistency between 3 nodes, distributed file system or single user database than trying to figure a bug in a large open source codebase.

You may find following links helpful in finding some of such courses:

yogeshp··on How to earn your macroeconomics and finance white belt as a software developer
CFA Institute has made their resources for Claritas Certification (Investent Foundations) freely available online [1]. It covers ample material on economics and finance for people from non-finance background. Material is not as rigorous as CFA level 1 but is sufficient for Software Engineers.

yogeshp··on Indian government to intercept, monitor, and decrypt citizens’ computers
All the agencies mentioned in the article are related to anti-terrorism, Investigations and Tax department. They could get any data previously too, with warrant but now they can track you without warrant.

It doesn't means anything for normal IT work .

yogeshp··on Microsoft suspends Windows 10 update, citing data loss reports
If you have licensed Windows, install Virtualbox on Ubuntu and install Windows in that. Share a drive between them and you should be able to maintain Office documents that way.
yogeshp··on Ask HN: What are your favorite statistics and probability textbooks?
Introduction to Probability, 2nd Edition by Dimitri P. Bertsekas, John N. Tsitsiklis. It is textbook for EECS Probability course at MIT and very well written for beginners.

Additionally, there are video lectures available on MIT OCW which mirror this book closely.

yogeshp··on What life could be like for civilizations 1 trillion years from now
I think the movie Interstellar closely depicts how life on Earth may turn out. Climate change is never going to stop, humans except few just don't care. Instead they will try to create more machines which will try to use carbon engineering to reduce CO2(as one discussed few days back on HN). With less need for trees and more need to fulfill population demand, if this technology becomes successful, it can be a doomsday scenario for trees and land everywhere will slowly start to erode resulting in greater imbalance in the ecosystem and eventually worldwide famines. Add to that, thawning of permafrost will release large amount of methane along with bacteria which were inactive since ages and for which humans may have no cure.

Most of CO2 is absorbed by oceans, and humans may never be able to find a way to tame CO2 there, this will result in much faster melting of ice in Arctic and Antarctica than anticipated.

No, humans aren't going to find an alternative habitable planet anytime soon where they can travel.

yogeshp··on Ask HN: Is there a new habit you cultivated recently that is really paying off?
Recently I read the book - Eat that Frog by Brian Tracy.

One of point was to keep a pocket diary where you list all the TODO tasks and keep striking them off as they complete. Helped me in many ways:

1. It is very easy to forget many tasks but by writing them and checking the diary even once in a while, it is possible to be reminded regularly.

2. Its better than mobile TODO apps as I don't need to check mobile phone regularly and don't get distracted.

3. When you strike some things off, you see the progress that you are achieving something. Just deleting everything shows you long list of tasks yet to be done and can be demotivating.
