yobert··on Tauri – Creating Tiny Desktop Apps With React/Vue
I can't believe they didn't make their logo something like ⧊ :)
yobert··on Blender 3.2
One of their very early decisions was extremely good in my opinion. Each blender file is saved with a complete schema at the start which basically describes a bunch of C structs, and has a marker for byte order. This means that .blend files can be backwards and forwards compatible, and in the most common case of the schema matching your memory layout, can have their data structures copied directly into memory and then only pointer patching is required. It's quite remarkable.
yobert··on Ask HN: Why can't I host my own email?
I've been using https://maddy.email/ for self-hosting from my own home server. It's amazing! It's the first time email setup has been easy for me. I don't have any problems with SPAM so far, and gmail accepts my messages without issue.
yobert··on Ask HN: Share your personal site
Oooo that's fun. I feel like a kid playing with jelly.

yobert··on Tool for Ukrainians to apply for TPS or asyluym in the US
My company released today a tool for Ukrainians to easily apply for TPS (Temporary Protected Status) or asylum in the United States. The official documents required for this are complicated, tedious, and only available in English. Our tool will easily generate them for you and has been professionally translated into Ukrainian. Please share with your Ukrainian friends!
yobert··on MikroTik authentication revealed
I've bought three Protectli servers/routers and put OpenBSD on all of them with great success. (With coreboot!) I highly recommend taking a look at https://protectli.com/product-comparison/ though they do cost more than the microtik routers.

Another option if you don't need tremendous performance is https://pcengines.ch/ which also runs OpenBSD very well.

> Would you sometimes take a break from programming to go help accounting do the accounting work? No, no you wouldn't - accounting would smack the tar out of you. Just because you think you can contribute because you used to be able to is the notion that you need to break, and this applies to other fields too.

As a counter-argument to this: With my software side business, I've had to dabble in accounting, and I find it a refreshing break. It's like going outside and pulling some weeds. For me it contributes to my productivity and mental health to have a diverse work experience.

yobert··on Exploring System76's New Rust Based Desktop Environment
I think you can assume they meant succeed at creating computers people love to use and selling them.
yobert··on Music industry is suing youtube-dl hosters
It's as good of quality as listening directly on YouTube, which is fine enough for most people.
yobert··on OpenBSD Webzine Issue #6
It's just a fun way to present some news about OpenBSD that the author cares about. What's confusing? There can be more than one website about OpenBSD.
yobert··on Intel claims new i9 is faster than M1 Max
A flagship i9-12900K desktop processor is $618 right now on Newegg. Seems pretty reasonable to me!
yobert··on Elizabeth Holmes found guilty
I have a WeWork shirt that says "The Future Is Awesome". I used to hate it but now I love it :D
yobert··on Ask HN: What is your spiritual practice?
I am so sorry for your pain. My journey paralleled yours, just easier. Figuring out who/what I was after leaving the mormon church was internal chaos for years. I'm glad to hear you're at a better place now.
yobert··on My Path to Financial Independence as a Software Engineer
It's not that kids cost a lot (though they might). I think it's because kids take a lot of time and energy.
yobert··on 25-Dec. Shout-out to everyone else at work
I can't believe how bad the EHRs in ER settings seem to be. I run a small (but complete) EHR that never has these problems, but we don't have the right sales people I guess to get into these settings.

yobert··on Perl Turns 34 Today
I've been maintaining a large perl codebase that I and some friends wrote for 20 years now. It sure has some cruft, but I am often blown away by how massively productive I am in it. And in 20 years, Perl has never broken compatibility for us that I know of. (Though a few spooky CPAN that relied on unsafe internals did require fixing.)

One interesting thing I've noticed about perl is that almost all the examples of how to do something online are absolutely terrible. Our codebase is good because we learned how to write perl clearly, and it looks nothing like how we started out from examples.

Anyways, I don't really have a point, except to say Perl really is amazing, even if it's not really growing nowadays. I think it will be around for ages to come.

yobert··on Truths about video game stories
I feel like the author has missed some important games, like Star Control 2 and Final Fantasy 7.
yobert··on AWS is playing chess, Cloudflare is playing Go
It is cute. Wish it worked in firefox though!
yobert··on Hi, I'm David
That's super fun. I feel like it's a very specific animation, so it makes sense!
yobert··on Hi, I'm David
It is! That game 100% dominated my childhood. What a work of art.
yobert··on Hi, I'm David
Yeah you have to work your way up the text to find your way back to the top :D
yobert··on Hi, I'm David
Yup! I fired up DOSBOX and did a screen recording, and then paused it frame by frame so I could trace the pixels in GIMP. :D I adored that game.
yobert··on Hi, I'm David
Sure! You can list it! Thanks! It is hosted from my house's comcast though, so it might get slow... :D
yobert··on Hi, I'm David
Thanks! I've never heard of esheep, but have been inspired by some desktop hacks over the years. (Remember that roach program for windows?) The cat animation was lifted from an old DOS game called Alleycat that I loved.
yobert··on Hi, I'm David
Thank you! I made a library out of it (http://yobert.github.io/catify/) if you want to add it to something of yours!
yobert··on Hi, I'm David
Use the up/down/left/right arrow keys. It's not very fancy. (Mobile not supported either.)
yobert··on Hi, I'm David
I put an interactive cat on my resume and I'm pretty sure it literally got me the job. (https://pkunk.org/resume/) A little fun goes a long way!
