yobananaboy··on A Selection of Los Alamos Rolodex Business Cards
I found a neat NASA report from 1970 that Plasmadyne was part of, looks like this one was a legit company! https://ntrs.nasa.gov/api/citations/19700013448/downloads/19...
yobananaboy··on TinyWind: A pixel pirate sailing game with real wind physics (380k+ kms sailed)
You have to gain some gold first by killing ships, then once you have 3 you can sail to the island and a button pops up to capture it. Took me a bit to figure it out too. Also once you've captured an island, you can lower your sails there to heal!
yobananaboy··on The surprise deprecation of GPT-4o for ChatGPT consumers
I've been seeing someone on Tiktok that appears to be one of the first public examples of AI psychosis, and after this update to GPT-5, the AI responses were no longer fully feeding into their delusions. (Don't worry, they switched to Claude, which has been far worse!)
yobananaboy··on Show HN: Whittle – A shrinking word game
I didn't realize that I was supposed to get to 0, but just trying to get as many words as possible. I got down to 'a' and reset, it would be nice if just getting to a 1 letter word prompted the win state.
yobananaboy··on HDR‑Infused Emoji
This also works on Slack profile pictures if you want to be extra obnoxious!
yobananaboy··on LLM-powered tools amplify developer capabilities rather than replacing them
https://web.archive.org/web/20250421182808/https://matthewsi... Site got hugged
yobananaboy··on Show HN: I built an app to stop me doomscrolling by touching grass
This is sick! Is it using an LLM's photo detection to determine if it is a picture of touching grass?

I recently added all of my most distracting apps to the Hidden section on iPhone. It requires a FaceID check to even see the apps, and blocks all notifications from them. It has helped me cut down on the scroll-time significantly.

yobananaboy··on The Most Mario Colors
I disagree on both points:

1. The color is BBBBY

2. The lettering has the same 3D block polygonal font as Super Mario 64, with some stylization

yobananaboy··on What we know about CEO shooting suspect
It's not scrubbed, still here: https://www.linkedin.com/in/luigi-mangione/
yobananaboy··on Show HN: A Marble Madness-inspired WebGL game we built for Netlify
So uh, don't try to make the jump from the pink elevator to the solitary pink cube on the last level. If you make it, you're stuck there forever! (I thought it would be a skill jump to an easter egg)
yobananaboy··on Ask HN: Who wants to be hired? (November 2024)

yobananaboy··on Wait Until 8th
Oh wow that is surprisingly spooky, looks like something out of Coraline.
yobananaboy··on Anna's Archive Faces Millions in Damages and a Permanent Injunction
You forgot to add a link about the accused archivist, here's an article[0] about her denial of any connection to the group. (One of their arguments is that she has a github account named "anarchivist", which is a pretty sick name)

yobananaboy··on Crossing the impossible FFI boundary, and my gradual descent into madness
I'm gonna find some reason to use this for my Battleship game too!
yobananaboy··on Fast real time fluid simulator based on MPM algorithm
Whoa also changing window size affects the simulation too!!
yobananaboy··on Fast real time fluid simulator based on MPM algorithm
Trying to sort the particles into single color blobs is pretty fun!
yobananaboy··on Images that Sound: Generating spectrograms that are also images
My dog never responds to barking sounds in shows / movies, but when I played the spectrogram one he went wild. Anyone have an idea of what makes it different?
yobananaboy··on Remembering Apple’s Newton, 30 years on
Out of curiosity what was your list price? I’ve been starting to collect (got a Mac IIsi with a portrait monitor a few months back) and would be interested in getting a MessagePad in working condition
yobananaboy··on The math prodigy whose hack upended DeFi won’t return funds
They were holding $17m in funds and only paid 2 unnamed security auditors?

Yes, getting a proper audit for a Defi Protocol is expensive (probably 8 person weeks at $20-30k/week or ~$200k), and every good audit firm has a 3-6 month waiting period. But when you’ve got 100x that to lose, it’s a drop in the bucket.

yobananaboy··on The math prodigy whose hack upended DeFi won’t return funds
The 3 ETH was the gas fees for the transactions. (Some went to deploying the attacking contract, some went to contract interactions afterwards.)

With a flash loan, the funds must be returned by the end of the transaction, or the transaction fails. This makes the completion of the transaction the collateral, as if it fails at any point, all transactions (including the loan) get reverted.

yobananaboy··on The Economics of Pinball (2009)
The next sentence addresses that: "Then anytime an above average player gets on the machine, he’s getting free games all day long."

Since the replay score is set based on the top percentage of scores, if the majority of players in the movie theater (novices) lower the average score, a good player (wizard) is more easily at the high end of the score distribution, earning free plays consistently.

yobananaboy··on Ask HN: Who is hiring? (August 2021)

ConsenSys is a leading provider of crypto-space software and services, such as Metamask, Infura, and Codefi.

yobananaboy··on ZSA Planck EZ: A Powerful, Backlit, Open-Source, 40% Mechanical Keyboard
> There's 3 more thumb cluster keys on each side, but they're unreachable from a typing position; I use them for stuff that isn't related to typing, like closing a window and setting/navigating through bookmarks in my IDE.

I rarely use those smaller keys on the thumb cluster without moving my entire hand (which is generally for alt tabbing, and I should figure out a better way to do that).

The main reason I was interested in the Ergodox was that my Razer Orbweaver was having issues, and I really liked the ortholinear layout for gaming. Now I've got separate layouts for different game types (fps, mmo, rts), and I just move the right half out of the way for more mouse room. Can't go back now, I struggle to type on any normal keyboards.

yobananaboy··on Show HN: I made a community sourced fitness routine database
I'm happy to see that since this post, a bunch of workouts have been added (whoever did the saitama one got a good laugh out of me).
yobananaboy··on Subdomains (like .xr) for alternate root zone Handshake now available
Because there is no central authority, what stops these alternative DNS servers from selling these domains themselves? Still seems like an interesting concept, but I gotta research it more.
yobananaboy··on Click
Thanks for the recommendation, this game has taken over my life for the last 24 hours.
yobananaboy··on Am I Disabled?
> There are parents so appalled by the prospect of having an autistic child that they knowingly expose their children to infectious diseases – potentially fatal ones – because they have been led to believe that vaccination causes autism. When a difference is stigmatised to that degree, it has a wretched effect on the mental health of those who bear it

My parents ended up as antivaxxers when 2 of my siblings were diagnosed with autism. My 3 youngest sisters aren’t vaccinated, and one of my autistic brothers isn’t up to date on his. Which is crazy to realize that damn, my mother would rather risk having my little sisters die from a horrible disease than risk them being anything like their neurodivergent siblings. I’m the eldest, and with adhd I was always treated differently, but not to the same degree. This passage really helped me understand the anguish that has lead to multiple suicide attempts by one of my brothers.

yobananaboy··on Perfect Edition: A lightweight, responsive web e-book template
I think it's really interesting that it's hard to find exactly what the meaning of "Perfect Edition" is in the English internet. I was curious about what it means in the manga world, and all I can guess at is that it's multiple manga issues bundled into one hardcover book printed on glossy paper. Anyone know anything else (or more accurate) about the etymology of the term?
yobananaboy··on Ozymandias
The idea is that if you accept the fact that your loved ones may disappear at any time, you’ll appreciate them and love them more in the present. And when they do disappear, feeling that sadness is part of being human. The important thing is to accept that they’re gone, and not wallow in despair, as it’s something you can’t change.
