ynac··on A searchable library of forgotten public-domain film clips from 1915 onward
If you are feeling inspired by the project to edit a found footage awesome thing, here's https://mobygratis.com - an amazing gift to filmmakers and a pretty snazzy listening experience for (semi-)library music.
ynac··on Tell HN: Codex Is Down [fixed]
Way to go, Ace!
ynac··on Tell HN: Codex Is Down [fixed]
Leveraging the Ai for a Denon telnet / HTTP integration to help guests watch a DVD or the radio without my help : )
ynac··on Tell HN: Codex Is Down
Cool - what were you working on!
ynac··on Ask HN: Who's still keeping a DOS machine up because the business depends on it?
It's not totally for business, but I run some antennae and radio telescopes that feed through a Gateway 386/33/16MB RAM. As well as a Getac, no idea what model, but it's from the early 2000s. They both feed through to a A/B switched Paradise CRT (so cute). dBase is on the list.
ynac··on Trump TV: The Essentials Station
Just finished reading Amusing ourselves to death : public discourse in the age of show business by Postman last night - and then seeing this... <laugh-cry>

Essential reading!

Can there be ANY doubt this "channel" will follow the Trump brand when he's no longer obliged to public service?

ynac··on AI-generated posters don’t have to be horrible
You said it - and the same is true for many of the other talents from Ai. I've worked with gobs of artists, accountant, MBAs, developers, appliance repair techs, and so on. Ai does a better job than most of them, but not as good as the best of them.
ynac··on Can Two Friends Complete a Game No One Has Ever Finished?
The thing I recall about playing CNA and other big tablers like it (e.g. Hobbit, Axis & Allies, etc.) was when they were over, the replay in debate about how things turned out, especially the simulations, went on almost as long as the game play!

How did the game parallel the actual events, where it divitated why, and then comparing it to other sessions. If we didn't finish the game, aside from the mundane reasons like a parent needed the table, floor, room, or player, it was usually because we found a bad route in the game. Often from a sploiler in the group (I'm looking at you, Mitch! Haha) who took such an extreme tact that made the game play boring or worse, short! The last thing you want after spending a full day or more setting up a game is to have it end in a few hours.

ynac··on Tell the speakers that you liked their talks
I once gave a short talk at Harvard. Nearly didn't because I was so intimidated by the crowd. Got through it, hardly able to read the room because of my internal dialogue of focusing on the content, and also convinced I was a fraud. Then I realized I went over my time limit by almost 50%. When it was over, my emotions were such a mess I logically thought I should try to cry or scream to let off the overwhelming negative energy I had built up. It was one unreal bucket of feelings after another. As I collected my clip board and bag, I walked to the side of the hall where I was sure I had seen an exit, someone dodged in front of me and put their hand out and introduced themselves and started asking questions about the talk. Took her card and suddenly there was another. It wasn't until maybe the fourth person when I realized there was a line of at least twenty people. Yeah, stop and say hi. Even with critical questions, complaints. Making a connection with other people is one of the most important things we can do.

ynac··on Archiving pirate radio station Kool FM
And you reminded me of a short-lived station out of either Philly or maybe smaller market like Pottstown that played new wave. I was loading my tape deck every night. I just dug out my old disks, cassettes, I wonder if they are in there.

There was also The Sunday Night Six-Pack on either WMMR or WYSP that played 6 albums straight through uncut. I used my VCR to record the whole show every week. Still have a few of them left - Joe Walsh night!

ynac··on Archiving pirate radio station Kool FM
No kidding. Seattle has almost nothing left, except an AM station and a few shows on mixed format stations. Chicago's top shelf if you're hunting for online. They have lots of choices, just depending on your particular need / mood.

Power 99 was 98.9 WUSL (I looked it up to be sure). All I could recall for sure was "Power 99...FM". Heh.

ynac··on Archiving pirate radio station Kool FM
This is a timely intersection for a search I've been doing for archives of the Quiet Storm shows of the 90s from Power 99 FM in Philly. At the start of my search I didn't realize how ephemeral radio was treated. Growing up I listened to tapes of Abbott and Costello, The Shadow, and dozens of other shows. I just assumed there were recordings of everything. I found hundreds of KCMU and WFMU shows I recorded from live streams, when I wasn't living near enough to get the terrestrial signal. And the odd LPFM / pirate broadcasts. It might be time to build an archival WARK.fm
ynac··on Ask HN: What are you working on? (September 2026)
It's a few hours long on Sunday mornings, snacks and of course coffee. We start with hot coal and long pot (I decided against the hook and flat pan style mostly for safety as well as the challenge is just too high for a beginner). Then move on to a little science and indoor stove top roasting. We'll roast just a couple different beans so they can taste test and compare the variations of roastings. They go home with a kilo of beans and a life time skill.

The local app for tracking the ferry system and tickets started to fail on my ancient telephone, so after losing physical ticket with 10 passes on it, worth a couple hundred bucks, I spent a few weeks building a simple web app that scans and holds the ticket locally, and also gives a nice big simple bar code for the ferry workers to scan. Second test was a success.

Coffee roasting class for home roasters. Open fire traditional Ehtiopian styles then shifting to covered pots and some introduction to dedicated machines.

Repairing the ice maker in the frig. This will be my third time in. Of all the uses of Ai, diagnosing appliances is easily the most amazing to me. I like the work and thought involved in figuring things out, and I like saving time and money getting it done.

ynac··on "I discovered a new medium for storytelling"
I think this is a pretty important perspective to hear if you are a developer. It was mentioned somewhere else here today about the craftsman vs the producer. This is a example of goals and authorship in the face of shortcuts and extended resources.
ynac··on Who Dung It? (Turdle.fun)
Looked like a two to me.
ynac··on Movie Scene Map – 13,312 films, series, games, anime and manga
Nice work - the map UI is smooth and easy, sites are surprisingly accurate for single scenes. Can you partner with another database to really bulk this up? Possibly even grow it a little more with crowd-sourcing with verification. More notes about the scenes within the movie would be handy. Fan notes and threads could be a horrible idea I'd like to see. : ) I could see this being a good resource for scouts, fans, and others. I'd be down to help on this!

ynac··on No AI Fridays
That reminds me of "coding" in my Roaring Spring No.20165. Which is to say, my notebook. It was great for when I didn't have access to a computer. I remember the feeling of how cool it looked along side cartoons of monsters and cars crashing into the paper's edge.

ynac··on Creating the Aetheryte Radio
Years...until a period of extreme stress came along. Came and went for a couple of years (along with a host of other stress induced fun) and now it's gone again.
ynac··on Creating the Aetheryte Radio
The thrill of hunting sound is unlike anything else. Maybe 20 years ago I used a software synth to match the sound I had from tinitus. It magically erased my tinitus, making me feel like I was somehow a walking video game. Pew pew - alien in my head zapped!

Here are a couple of links to very good synths / sounds from Dr. Pigeon. I used the second tool for an improvised album. Really cool tool.

ynac··on CEO fired developers to make room for AI. Developers create open source AI CEO
Just like working with Ai on dev projects is like working along side a really smart but drunk buddy, an Ai CEO is like being guided by a coked up business coach. In the end, with Ai where it is, I think it could maintain a company already moving along with healthy systems and a known cycle. But same as where Ai fails on larger dev projects, the same happens with a business. The timing for stepping back and diving deep is critical to seeing opportunities for growth, avoiding pitfalls, and doing the daily maintenance required to keep any project alive in the long-term.
ynac··on Conway's Game of Life in real life
Anyone else expecting (fearing) some sort of Stephen King sci-fi game show? Whew - just light bulbs...
ynac··on Television to the Rescue Camille Acker on the Craft Potential of TV
I'm reading /Amusing Ourselves To Death/ by Neil Postman, trying to figure out how the lessons of TV might inform the lessons of social media and specifically extreme brevity of discourse is having on society. Acker's take here is great for an adjacent but perpendicular view. Especially for the craftwork around any medium.
ynac··on The Amazon tax
That's a totally legit answer! I've heard that from quite a few friends. My personality (or something) nags me too much to do so, but I get it.
ynac··on The Amazon tax
Frank and earnest question about using a company when you think they aren't a net benefit to society, especially when there are other options. I too have my reasons for thinking Goog, Amzn, and others are not good. I just don't use them. The other options seem great to me - I never long for what I'm missing. Momentum, habit, peer pressure, or something else going on?
ynac··on I turned my RSS feeds into an e-ink newspaper to stop reading on my phone
You got it - a very little joke. I was going to double down on a dirty chai joke, but I felt it would be inauthentic.
ynac··on I turned my RSS feeds into an e-ink newspaper to stop reading on my phone
What paper - if you don't mind sharing. That's pretty interesting!
