yftsui··on US jury says Apple owes record $5.7B in haptic technology patent case
Hmm these patents are filed in 2019, but Apple Taptic Engine launched in 2015.
yftsui··on iCloud backup – 5GB available, but I can't use it
If you really hate Apple, you should just buy a different brand, there is nobody forcing you guying Apple devices.
yftsui··on How do payments work in the US, China, and Brazil?
This article is written almost entirely from the seller's point of view, of course seller does not want to pay any fees. Some of the claims that buyer get same level of protection without chargeback is hilarious, it might be true that the author get special treatment as a foreigner in China from the government (the 12315 statement), but that's far from a typical customer experience.

"Chinese consumer law also gives buyers stronger remedies when a merchant knowingly commits fraud, including damages above the purchase price."

There is no small claim court or equivalent in China, 12315 is likely the closest but they can only provide recommendations, they cannot freeze assets or issue demands like a court. In absence of chargeback, the buyer owns the burden of gather evidence and proof, which usually includes paid test reports from trusted government agencies that the item is defect. In practice, a seller ships junk or nothing often get to keep the money and close the shop before you can get the money back.

yftsui··on Loupe – A iOS app that raises awareness about what native apps can see
iPhones sold in China have that in settings, you can block both WLAN(Wi-Fi) and Cellular data per app. Why that turned out to be a nightmare is a different story
yftsui··on Raspberry Pi 5 – 16GB RAM
Assume the numbers are correct, Pi spent $100 for a PCB with some components; Neo's hardware includes keyboard, 13 inch display, aluminum chassis, battery, charger. You remove the costs of the above from that $500.
yftsui··on ICAO issued new power bank restriction on flight
> “China banned non-CCC certified, … which seems to be targeting the quality control side of the problem”

that’s not fully true though, ROMOSS is the brand that sold power banks caught fire, however all of those were CCC certified.

yftsui··on Big data on the cheapest MacBook
I lost trust of DuckDB's test after https://duckdb.org/2024/12/06/duckdb-tpch-sf100-on-mobile#a-..., they were comparing apples with bananas, well actually Swift app on iPhone vs CLI app in a terminal.
yftsui··on Apple Needs to Copy Samsung's New Security Smartphone Screen ASAP
When your display fails in viewing angles, we call it privacy screen
yftsui··on Your pet's microchip may now be useless after chip company goes out of business
The chip will still be working after 24PetWatch is gone, you can enroll the same serial to more providers i.e. AKC Reunite.
yftsui··on Your pet's microchip may now be useless after chip company goes out of business
The microchip stores nothing but a serial number. I don’t quite understand the design that you would need a vendor to maintain a database between the serial and owner information, why not just store owner phone number like a traditional dog tag?
yftsui··on The biggest CRT ever made: Sony's PVM-4300
Sony didn’t give it to the restaurant; instead the restaurant purchased it during Japan’s economic boom.

How Lina Khan Killed iRobot

yftsui··on How Lina Khan Killed iRobot
Kind of wild and a little emotional to think that two robot companies off Route 128 ended up with such different fates — Kiva Systems became Amazon Robotics, while iRobot’s Amazon deal was blocked by Lina Khan and now it’s being sold off to a foreign company.
yftsui··on Wall Street ruined the Roomba and then blamed Lina Khan
You know Lina Khan lead FTC blocked the deal, but if you check the thread, huge amount of folks aren’t aware of this fact. As an owner of 2 iRobot Roomba I feel so “protected” now, they may become a brick or spy of a foreign company.
yftsui··on Wall Street ruined the Roomba and then blamed Lina Khan
Because Lina Khan will block it as long as iRobot still has value? Her entire vision is just destroy corporate values.
yftsui··on Eliminating Second Seattle Rail Tunnel Could Save $4.5B, but with Major Impacts
Did the website intentionally rotate the map by 90 degrees to make it harder for readers to realize how much downtown impact this tunnel would have?
yftsui··on With AI Boom, Dell's Datacenter Biz Is Finally Bigger Than Its PC Biz
Infrastructure Solutions Group - is that Dell or the acquired EMC?
yftsui··on Microsoft Office is using an artificially complex XML schema as a lock-in tool
Exactly, there is no data provided on why the author believes it is “too complex”, just one random person ranting.
yftsui··on I convinced HP's board to buy Palm and watched them kill it
My experience with Windows phone around 2010 was exact opposite, very slow and clumsy. I recall I tried a HTC phone on WM 6.5, far behind iPhone 3GS
yftsui··on India's Tata Consultancy Was Gaming the US Visa System
The article talked about L1-A, not L1-B.
yftsui··on Apple iPhone sales dip despite AI rollout
I used almost all the recent iPhones except 14. 11 is heavy and no MagSafe thus its a hard pass, the camera is also super old; 12 is lighter but poor battery life, camera improved a lot; 13 has better battery life but weird camera optimizations despite they tried to improve the low light performance; 15 Pro is good except the low light spatial video capture is noisy; happy with 16 Pro now.
yftsui··on Every System is a Log: Avoiding coordination in distributed applications
The diagrams are remarkably neat, has a feeling of both excalidraw and draw.io, anyone know what tool was used create those?
yftsui··on The Dumbest Bike Lane Law Just Passed in Canada [video]
I love the fact that bike lane supporters are always winning in these arguments: if bike lane works we should get more; if bike lane doesn't work it means it is not enough thus we should get even more.
yftsui··on The Dumbest Bike Lane Law Just Passed in Canada [video]
Does more bike lanes result in more bikes? The bike lane city added near my home is barely used, while local businesses are suffering as the bike lane took away street parking, ppl need to drive more to find parking then walk back or just skip those merchants
yftsui··on The withering dream of a cheap American electric car
Develop film takes time, same as why somebody wait for hours and hours just to get an EV charged? The “last generation” can “recharge” to 450miles in 3 minutes at a gas station then move on.
yftsui··on Show HN: RF Hunter – Find hidden cameras and other devices
The most effective way would be use a Thermal Camera, because a normal "hidden camera" you get from eBay will consume around 5 Watts - a significant heat dissipation.

For others, probably just get an off the shelf TinySA?

yftsui··on Amazon reveals first color Kindle, new Kindle Scribe, and more
It's definitely not "a decade". I have the 2013 Kindle Paper white and it doesn't have that feature without JB, the oldest device supported is Kindle Paperwhite 7th Gen which is released in 2019.

It's likely you are just lucky to buy a KPW with that feature just rolled out.

yftsui··on Raspberry Pi SD Cards and the Raspberry Pi Bumper
Some performance numbers would be better to understand what the real improvement is, SD / MicroSD card speeds vary a huge amount, even they are marked as the same class.

For example I was picking up an SD card for my camera, according to this test https://www.memorycard-lab.com/-Cameras/Panasonic-Lumix-S5-I...

There is a particular V60 card performs better than a lot of V90 cards.

yftsui··on Apple's naming conventions are a mess
Exactly. Regardless how much Apple pushed on branding the watch as "Apple Watch", a few of my coworkers on the Android side always say I have an "iWatch Ultra", given these are folks have an above average attention to the tech sector, I won't believe "Apple Phone" is a better name.
