yftsui··on Apple's naming conventions are a mess
So when you rant some random names on medium instead of reddit, you get to top of Hacker News?
yftsui··on China's Real Economic Crisis
Did you even read the article? Label every article like labeling a diode is not something worth published here as comments.
yftsui··on Reverse engineering and dismantling Kekz headphones
The beginning of the article says the device "work without any internet connection and all of the content already on the headphones itself", then the device needs a Windows application downloads content from the Internet.

I am a bit frustrated as isn't this just an MP3 player playing from SD card but put inside a headphone? Doesn't sound like an invention at all.

yftsui··on A quarter million Comcast subscribers had their data stolen from debt collector
I got those daily as well, very funny some of them use my old address with an even older google street view before the home was built, claiming they just "visited your house yesterday"
yftsui··on Air Con: $1697 for an on/off switch
slight off topic: I have quite a few low end Android phone bought between 2013-2017, only 1 of them is still bootable, all others cannot pass recovery like author’s tablet. Is it something related with older Android versions or just the cheap flash they used in if?
yftsui··on Local library has decades old server running, and they don't know what it's doing
VGA use a 15 pin DSUB connector though.
yftsui··on CrowdStrike's Falcon Sensor also linked to Linux kernel panics and crashes
Not surprising at all. My work issued MacBook top CPU time has been always `com.crowdstrike.falcon.Agent`, before Apple M1 released my Intel 2019 MacBook Pro can barely do any everyday task with that Agent running in the background. It crashed video calls, crashed the entire OS, I couldn't even smoothly type in an IDE back then.
yftsui··on Opinion: I'd rather have a headphone jack and a microSD slot than AI in my phone
Nope, I’d rather my phone has no connector ports at all, get rid of USB-C will be the dream.
yftsui··on The FCC wants to force carriers to unlock phones within 60 days
Not only its carrier-locked, it is sometimes model (variant model) specific so after unlock you are still stuck with that carrier because the other carrier will not take it.

For instance, after 1 year T-Mobile paid service it finally unlock your phone, thinking about moving to AT&T. AT&T and its MVNO Cricket Wireless actively disconnect your service when you put the SIM card to an "unsupported phone" just because it is not on their list.

yftsui··on iOS 18 could 'sherlock' $400M in app revenue
I am one of the persons bought AllTrails for a year just to see a single trail(i am not a hiking person),the prompt to subscribe is everywhere and so attempting thus I fell for it.

“Reviews, routes reports of trail conditions” is probably the biggest scam of AllTrails for me, there was literally nothing for the one I was looking at. Ironically, there are better information on Washington Trails Association website.

yftsui··on FCC rule would make carriers unlock all phones after 60 days
For premium devices, lock for 60 days reduce chances that the devices are stolen during shipment then appear in Shenzhen next day.

As someone received a perfectly packaged empty box this year, I think this is not ideal but reasonable.

yftsui··on FCC rule would make carriers unlock all phones after 60 days
I believe he meant financing will become more expensive, which may actually increase the consumer cost over a fixed period (if the carriers are not willing to decrease the plan prices which are jacked up to compensate the contracts).
yftsui··on Netflix's bet on advanced video encoding
What I observed is pirate groups either rip BD, or WEB-DL from Amazon Prime video, unless it is some Netflix / Hulu original content they don't pirate from Netflix due to poor quality.

Netflix is not focusing on quality but saving their delivery cost on bandwidth, which may hurt them later surprisingly.

yftsui··on StreetComplete OSM Contribution App Begins iOS Port
Agree, the linked page wrote an article as if it is the project owner's announcement but instead just a random content generator website.
yftsui··on Why a $100k income no longer buys the American Dream in most places
A simple Google search will give you an obvious result: “Spending to purchase and improve houses and other housing units is treated as investment and not consumption in the CPI.”

You are welcome.

yftsui··on The FCC needs to stop 5G fast lanes
Giving “free data pass” to limited set of apps is even more harmful IMO, the monopolies can afford pay the network infrastructure but small app developers will not be able to.
yftsui··on Motorola spoiled a good budget phone with bloatware
You probably bought a Motorola version instead of the ones from prepaid providers. I have Moto G Power 2020 and 2021 from Cricket, both are full of bloatware like the article.
yftsui··on Class action lawsuit over Apple's 5GB iCloud limit and iOS backup restrictions
Of course it does. With a given number of resources, more options needs to be supported means less resource spend on each one.
yftsui··on The New Work-Life Balance: Don't Have Kids
Daycare isn't much cheaper either, take Seattle as example it is about 4200 per month, for multiples the 2nd child get a 10-15% off. A nanny will be cheaper once you have more than 1 child.

Also, there is a long waitlist, so it needs really good luck to get an "offer" from the day care when you need it.

yftsui··on [dead]
Well, it didn't even happen in a Los Altos Apartment, that is a different suicide case involving two other individuals.
yftsui··on [dead]
Put conspiracy theory that this is related with layoffs aside, the author of the article didn't do a simple fact check.

The mentioned case happened in Santa Clara, the 2 person involved in the Los Altos case are both 66 years old, they are not the 2 Google engineers the author put names in the title. https://www.mercurynews.com/2024/01/16/two-adults-found-dead...

One party in the title is not deceased, there is a felony case against him in Santa Clara Superior Court.

yftsui··on Why North America Can't Build Nice Apartments (Because of One Rule)
The video initially got me bought the idea that require 2 stairs is the problem, until the last 4 minutes using a Seattle apartment as an example, quoting Seattle doesn't require 2 stairs for apartments up to 3 stories as the reason that Seattle got better apartment units.

I looked up the building on Seattle.gov: https://www.seattle.gov/dpd/AppDocs/GroupMeetings/DRProposal....

The mentioned building is on 1720 12th Ave in Capital hill, it is a 4 story building in the first place, per page 30. It is also a ridiculous spacious apartment unit, Seattle has the smallest apartments in US, an usual 2 bedroom is about 1000 sqft. The 2 bedroom unit showed in the video has a square footage of roughly 1500 sqft based on the plan set page 20, it is definitely not the normal apartments you see here. It looks to me other than regulations, there are other reasons for those large block size apartments.

yftsui··on I built an offline smart home
Building an offline smart home using Home Assistant is signing yourself to an unpaid SRE and nobody at home appreciate your work, it maybe a fun activity but don't expect too much out of it.

I did about 20% of the article's setup which took about a weekend of time, then randomly after Home Assistant update certain things start not functioning, i.e. I bought some $2 Xiaomi BLE temperature sensors and the key I setup just somehow stopped working, then its another half day wasted on trouble shooting them.

I regret my time wasted on them, especially given Home Assistant's data retention is not as great as I was expecting, i.e. default storage is only 14 days for temperature sensor and that sqlite DB is huge with this limited data.

yftsui··on United finds loose bolts on plug doors during 737 Max 9 inspections
I heard a similar story regarding Boeing’s North Charleston factory due to that push, it leads to some Boeing customers request the last inspection done in the Everett factoryinstead before delivery. My bigger worry is 787 as apparently it is moving to SC.
yftsui··on Microsoft poised to overtake Apple as most valuable company
SE 3rd gen is a great small phone, not sure why you say its screen is dim. Glad Samsung worked out for you, that’s the benefit of competition. It’s good that Apple wasn’t able to grip all segments of the market.
yftsui··on America doesn't know tofu
He is not wrong, the picture in the article has 11 kinds of tofu, if I visit all 3 Chinese grocery stores in the Seattle area (Asian Food Center in Seattle, Ranch 99 in Shoreline, Jing Jing in Factoria), I could probably get 6 or 7 in total out of 11. T&T Supermarket in BC has a slightly better inventory, but I doubt they will have all 11 in stock. If you are not on the east/west coast, the selection will be even smaller and worse in quality.

The "20 kinds of tofu" you can get in any Chinese grocery stores are often slightly changed variants (i.e. silk, soft, firm, hard tofu are pretty similar), and usually poor in quality.

He did not exaggerate the vegetarianism aspect as well, if you visit Temples in China, affiliated / non-affiliated restaurants nearby boasts "vegetarian feast" aka "全素斋" , some even name it a culture as "素斋文化". They make Tofu taste like meat and looks like meat, it is definitely a big thing and you could search for photos on how close these food look like real meat/fish and the popularity.

yftsui··on Details on Xiaomi EV
It does looks like Taycan, guess that's the directive engineers were given by the CEO.

"We've engineered the SU7 to offer a level of driving performance that stands among the best in its class, including the Porsche Taycan Turbo."

yftsui··on U.S. Government Database of Dad Jokes
Isn't AWS Global Accelerator just the edge CDN (like Cloudflare) here? When the actual web server went down it will not able to cover it, looks like AWS Global Accelerator lacks the Cloudflare feature of showing you the last cached result.
yftsui··on The Invisible Screen – An E-Paper Smart Display
The largest company you mentioned outsourced the manufacture to factories like Foxconn. A common pattern of those "upstart" is they are just a different thin wrapper around some other factories, with a crappier spec but able to sell the BOM with higher prices.
yftsui··on US ban on some Apple Watch sales now in effect
They are made by Luxshare's China factory, its Vietnam factory probably are trying to ramp up to it. Given how short Luxshare as a company and its capabilities to take shares from Foxconn, ppl may have over estimated the difficulty there.
