yeuxardents··on IRS collects milestone $1B in back taxes from high-wealth taxpayers
Didn't congress add 30bln to the IRS budget solely for this purpose, and the return is 1bln? I wonder if they even know what the outlays are for collection...will they ever collect more than the 30bln they allocated? How much does everyone need to be squeezed just to retrieve that 30bln allocation...All the smartest wealthiest people have the best accountants and moved/invested/capexd their money legally to begin with, within the letter of the law and rules anyway.

Solaris 10 with zones was amazing, I miss it.
yeuxardents··on Why did 250k Britons die sooner than expected?
How does something like that even happen...? All I can consider is the relatively small size of the UK, and how one can drive from one side of the other in the UK in just 15 or so hours...
yeuxardents··on U.S. military shoots down suspected Chinese surveillance balloon
Trying to remember what it was called but there was a 60/70s era program that was declassified that claimed to capture returning satellites from orbit using massive nets/parachutes carried behind large aircraft for example a c47 that would snap them right out of the air as they are falling.

yeuxardents··on Why did The Beatles get so many bad reviews?
I asked chatgpt to analyze the article, provide feedback, and analysis on why the premise of right or wrong might be incorrect.

I am now living in a simulation.

yeuxardents··on Ask HN: Are you a “lifer”? If so why?
Universities.

Politics, knowing where bodies are buried and entrenched bureaucracy can be just as much "tenure" but for staff.

It can be pretty bad, and often is.

yeuxardents··on UK Government scans all web servers hosted in the UK for vulnerabilities
Correct

"Who can receive services? Federal, state, local, tribal and territorial governments, as well as public and private sector critical infrastructure organizations."

However, methinks US definition of critical infrastructure organizations, both public and private, will be quite broad.

The US does do this, it is offered as part of security hygiene.

yeuxardents··on People pretending to be laid-off Twitter employees carrying boxes outside of HQ
Honestly it troubles me that anyone believes 'journalists' from any of the major corporations have _any_ credibility, even going back to the 1990s with censorship of stories have been rife within the corporate 'journalism' industry. There are very few journalists that deserve real credibility.
yeuxardents··on Why modern software is slow
The answer to this question is not politically correct, and therefore will not be answered. We will all end up with quantum computers and software that runs slower than any software from the late 90/2000s

yeuxardents··on Banned in the USA: The Growing Movement to Censor Books in Schools
There _already_ is and has ben censorship of books in schools for decades upon decades....adult sex novels are not included in the average school library and for good reason, and thats exactly what this is about as well, as you point out.
yeuxardents··on Ask HN: Why do I have to call for cancellation?
Likely because this is a Canadian company, though I have no experience with Canadian government services myself, but I would agree with you, being in the US. This statement, applied to the US is laughably hilarious in most of the country.
yeuxardents··on Uber investigating breach of its computer systems
This is one of my biggest fears about companies constantly outsourcing easily deployed internal apps as SaaS and just using mycompany.saasprovider.com

Normal users stand no chance, especially when there are URLs that are sketchy because oops, saasprovider already has a customer with your requested url, so you end up with

mycompany0.saasprovider.com or mycompany-1.saasprovider.com

Its terrible practice all around and lazy systems and services administration

Millenial Farmer on youtube illustrates this pretty great. I watched an entire year of videos from planting to harvest time and all that was involved tech-wise was pretty interesting...along with his frustrations with John Deere.

Good point about free college, most people don't realize that college is not the same in Europe as it is in America, there are reasons for it being able to be free.
yeuxardents··on Ancient healthcare fit for a king (2021)

Its possible that the VPN I am typically on changes my results from yours, as my VPN is quite specific to a research institution, and it is known how google curates results based on that information.
yeuxardents··on For some searches the whole screen on Google is now ads
I have found that for technical results, and niche programming, and anything really to do with IT, google gives top results. For just about everything else, use any other search engine.

yeuxardents··on Revisiting the “Tsar Bomba” nuclear test
I believe he lobbied JCOS to build a 'continent killer' capable of wiping Europe, for example, off the map. The ultimate deterrent...I believe the response was 'only if we had to use it would it work..so no, you crazy man' paraphrasing, read about it a few years ago

yeuxardents··on Ask HN: What are these low quality “code snippet” sites?
It reminds me of the scene from the original willy wonka from that era, where they are trying to use a computer to predict where the next winning ticket will be.
