yeowMeng··on Pilots hide mental health problems so they don't lose their licenses
Not sure this will be helpful but here goes.

I wanted to be a pilot but am tall (> 6 feet) and poor eye sight (< -10).

I was told at a young age that it would be nearly impossible for me. I accepted my fate for better or worse. Yet you have a better chance than me. Hard to say if it’s worth pursuing.

Nevertheless, I sympathize with you because people can make big mistakes and learn from it but the categorization and stigma remains.

Best of luck to you.

yeowMeng··on An elegy for GNU and RMS
I may have seen RMS talk once. I arrived early. After witnessing an interaction with a younger woman, it was weird…

Solarwinds is closed source so the choice to build from source is not really an option.
yeowMeng··on Show HN: Science and math-flavored programming problems for beginners
I like the eclectic selection of problems. I wish I had seen something like this when I was growing up; a manageable set of problems with the hint of depth.

It’s easy to snipe a nerd, but nerd sniping a non-nerd.. That’s gold.

FWIW: - No margins on the side on iPhone in portrait. - Math formulas are clipped on the top in landscape.

yeowMeng··on How to do things safely in Bash (2018)
> The [python] scripts are much faster...

Pipelines are performant; many algorithms can be expressed as pipelines. Bash has many built-in string manipulation mechanisms which do not require a sub shell.

Why do people who subscribe to the “avoid shell scripts at all costs” ideology feel so passionately about prescribing to others?

I like python, but if I am in a rush it’s shell.

yeowMeng··on Cscope: A developer's tool for browsing source code
Cscope in vim to jump between caller and callee (examine relationship). See where symbols are used. Jump to global definition. Could not live without cscope!
yeowMeng··on A researcher on how to live a happy life
I listened to the record again; Popple, crackling, the sound of streams; The tape is transcribed; From the spinning disk to my mind; Let’s listen again but this time one rut deeper; The orbit quickens but the beat is steady; The needle stops vibrating for a moment in between tracks;
yeowMeng··on The Bash Hackers Wiki
Bash was the first scripting language I became “good” in too! The skill seems to be regularly devalued in this community, and there is no surprise why (what is collaboration and maintenance for $500).

However, it’s hard to ignore why bash masters are born in the first place if better tools exist - shouldn’t the best tool win in the long run?

My take is lone wolf hackers working in corporate /_/nix constrained environment who become proficient, prolific and efficient win the corporate version of “survival of the fittest”.

yeowMeng··on Costco Capitalism
On my second day at work they let go of the dozen people who had been our groups training “buddies” the night before. That sends a strong message. In the five subsequent years, I can’t recall anyone else getting let go. I later learned that my cohort was rare in that we were hired directly without doing seasonal employment. Every other group hired after me, they would select their top picks from the seasonal cohorts of 20-30 people. One year they hired no one, one year they hired more than 10.

There were some people I thought were lazy, but many people on my night shift were hard and proud worker.. not like that day shift though!

He is free to compute as he desires. He has worked a lifetime for that freedom. As for a luddite, he has enabled generations to forge new wild techno paths.. So literally the opposite of a luddite.
yeowMeng··on Code Shelter: A Maintainer Community for Abandoned FOSS Projects
Curious to know why the HN title is using `FOSS` but only mention of `FOSS` is on the site’s /faq page. For free software zealots, the sites tag line “... maintaining popular open source projects...” may not spur action as OSS is missing that required RMS approved F.
yeowMeng··on What Do Happy Teens Do?
uhmm.. Staring into a book while listening to silence.. staring into a wall listening to music.. These are introspective journeys. You can’t expect everyone to be social in person from day 13.. Some ppl need time before they bloom socially. Social blooming is different for everyone.

yeowMeng··on Cities with Uber Have Lower Rates of Ambulance Usage
Speculation to follow: Health care as an industry is significantly more profitable than the proactive/preventative healh programs. Eliminating insurance removes a volatility dimension. Preventing problems (if possible) saves infinite suffering but costs someone profit.
yeowMeng··on The Vanual – Guide to Living in a Van
Some tree planters live in the bush for months.

I knew a tree planter who lived in a tent within a tent and inside the outer tent was a dozen jugs piss. He never bothered to empty the jugs until the camp relocated.

Also, it’s not impossible to defecate without a bathroom. Tree planters I knew would deficate in the bush a million miles away from a bathroom and they’d wipe their bums with sticks and leaves - they would do this regularly and brag about it. They enjoyed to defecate in front of people too and that’s how you knew they wern’t lying about the sticks and leaves.

If you were sick, you would lie in yr tent until you were not sick puking in garbage bags. If you got too sick someone could drive you into town.

Some people are just hard like that and guess what - those are the people that are going to want to live in a van and save $$$ on rent.

yeowMeng··on An Intro to Compilers
Totally!

Compiler development = Finite State Automaton + Push Down Automaton + Context Free Grammar + Intermediate representation + Static Analysis/Optimiation + Stack Machine + ...

Hardware Architecture = Stack Machine/Turing Machine + electricity + creativity

Stack Machine == Turing Machine

Compiler development starts and ends with Turing Machines.

Hardware architecture ends with Turing Machines operating at the speed of electricity through metal.

Yield is a function of energy to the foilage that feeds the flowering buds. The largest bud is usually at the top of the plant since light tends to be placed above a plant. During flowering, if you can distribute energy more evenly among the foiliage, you can increase yield by ~ 1/3 or more. Outdoor growers are reported to attach a string to the top of a plant when flowering begins, and bend the plant in an upside down `U` in order increase light distribution.

yeowMeng··on Google Trusted Contacts
Honest question: when you didn't want your parents knowing where you were - did you make good choices?

The truth for me; If I had listened to my parents, I would not be as cool. But If I had listened, I would be healthier and getting older - I realize health is happiness.

yeowMeng··on Google Trusted Contacts
I used to be a son out skateboarding with a parent subsidized cellphone that was, on many occations, not answered. I can now understand the worry I cause my parents 'you were gone for 12 hours skateboarding and didn't think to check yr phone once! You have a phone for one reason and that's so we can reach you.'

Parents will worry when they don't know where their kids are - and it's normal to worry. Despite (inspite?) of our paranoid tendencies, IMO parents have a right to know where their kids are.

yeowMeng··on Tips for Success in Undergraduate Math Courses (2002)
(Other useful strategies not mentioned)

* Watch video's on Khan Academy/youtube * Use Wolfram Alpha to confirm/deny yr solutions * Get a tutor who can explictly show you how they approach solving any arbitrary problem you bring them * Accumulate a list of math tricks that you can use and how to use them (example: how to long divide polynomials) * Print out old exams and pretend to take them ~3 days before final * Rewrite your lecture with each example problem on it's own page(s) * Create an index on your lecture notes so that you can quickly identify what type of problems and topics were covered in each lecture. * Identify yr strenghts - we can't all be good at everything - knowing yr strenghts will give you a foundation of confidence to build upon * Queue cards for memorizing all those trig identities * Expect to spend a lot of time - this is not always possible

yeowMeng··on Reasons not to use Uber
I dont think it's fair to characterize Stallman as an "Armchair Economist". FSF/GNU are active efforts in response to the Stallman world view. It's the opposite of armchair IMO.

There is a distinction between frameworks, theories and models.

Stallman is probably not offering models that contain the real predictive juice you're after because he has seen the same story unfold over and over. I give Stallman credit for referencing events that support his general theories/framework.

yeowMeng··on “Curl Bash piping” wall of shame
it could be base3, base64, base84.. that does not matter.

The part that I find interesting is how many people who read the script are going to decode the blob and verify that the blob is non-malicious.

yeowMeng··on “Curl Bash piping” wall of shame
I try to read scripts before I download and execute. The only time I thought WTF was this:

https://bootstrap.pypa.io/get-pip.py

Even though the author made it clear something funny was about to happen - I just could not execute.

When I showed it to the guy next to me (at work) - he said he already installed it on another box and didn't even look.

yeowMeng··on Emacs 25.1 released
Shells and /_/nix philosophy are a 4th generation query and data munging language with seamless extensibility.

Emacs is an perhaps the most ambitious implementation of a layer above shells and /_/nix philosophy.

The problem I have with Emacs is the surface area feels infinitly large and some features can be buggy.

I choose to use both.
