yenwodyah··on Cassie LaBelle: "eBay completely destroyed my life"
So this is basically a result of the DEA forcing eBay to enforce a ban on pill presses for them?

I hate how the government has basically been deputizing internet companies to enforce laws and regulations for them. If the DEA had done this themselves you could appeal it, ask your congressperson for help, or take them to court, but as long as their actions get laundered through a private company, the rights of the affected citizens disappear.

yenwodyah··on Judge rejects most ChatGPT copyright claims from book authors
Human brains are not large language models.
yenwodyah··on How iTunes Is Changing on PC
> If you don’t install Apple Music or Apple TV, you can continue to use iTunes for all your media. … so why would I install either of those? What’s actually changing if I only have iTunes installed?
yenwodyah··on The Philosophy of Humor: What Makes Something Funny? (2022)
The way I see it, the source of humor is basically the superiority theory but applied only to a knowledge gradient. Socrates saying that he’s handsome is funny because it implies that he doesn’t know how ugly he is, and the rest of us do. We all laugh to show that we possess the knowledge he lacks - we “get the joke”. The handsomest man in the world saying he’s handsome isn’t funny because it’s just a true statement, there’s no one being dumb to be made fun of.
yenwodyah··on The boiling frog of digital freedom
Well, it wouldn’t be the first time that a law with good intentions has prefaced a loss of freedom
yenwodyah··on ChatGPT turned generative AI into an “anything tool”
When you have a hammer…
yenwodyah··on The entrance fee to America’s museums keeps rising
They’re raising the entrance fee from $25 (which was apparently set in 2015) to $30

According to the BLS inflation calculator, $25 in 2015 had the same buying power as $32.64 now

Apparently museums are getting cheaper in real terms! What’s the issue?

yenwodyah··on Japan’s government will not enforce copyrights on data used in AI training
> Unless you're claiming that GPT-3.5 is deriving the Declaration of Independence (from information about the founding fathers?)

This would make a fun short story - “ChatGPT, author of the Quixote”

yenwodyah··on Microsoft looks to tame Bing chatbot
They should look to make it not tell lies first. If they were serious about trying to sell AI as a product, they’d make it functional instead of worrying about its tone.
yenwodyah··on AI Generated Seinfeld banned on Twitch for transphobic jokes
It’s not “about” anything, it’s just nonsense generated by a computer program. Any meaning you find in it is pareidolia.
yenwodyah··on Americans are choosing to be alone, but we should reverse that
As is the article, and almost everyone talking about the topic.
yenwodyah··on We've filed a lawsuit against GitHub Copilot
But Copilot has been shown to distribute (parts of) the copyrighted works used to create it. That’s the difference.
yenwodyah··on An unwilling illustrator found herself turned into an AI model
AI image generators also often churn out near-exact replicas of their inputs. For example:

yenwodyah··on Granting Pardon for the Offense of Simple Possession of Marijuana
He encouraged all state governors to do the same:

>Second, I am urging all Governors to do the same with regard to state offenses. Just as no one should be in a Federal prison solely due to the possession of marijuana, no one should be in a local jail or state prison for that reason, either.

yenwodyah··on Microsoft bakes a VPN into Edge and turns it on
I wouldn't care about this VPN if it weren't for the fact that I can't ignore it. There's an option to hide it from the toolbar, but every time I open an incognito window it pops back up again. It's incredibly annoying.
yenwodyah··on Apple Removes Flag Icons in Monterey 12.4
This is incorrect. Most flag emoji are based off of ISO 3166-1 alpha-2[0], which will continue to be updated. The Unicode Consortium’s decision to not accept new flags refers to flags outside that standard, like the pride flag or the flags of subnational regions.

yenwodyah··on Staggering stat: 87% of U.S. teenagers have iPhones
Only about $200 more than the national median household income https://www.census.gov/library/publications/2021/demo/p60-27...
yenwodyah··on What is the fuss over central-bank digital currencies?
One benefit I didn't see mentioned was that central banks, being an arm of the government, presumably won't cut off payment processing for completely-legal-but-socially-unacceptable sites like private payment services do. I know this happens to porn artists/websites all the time, and recently it's been happening to political extremist sites like Parler etc. too.
yenwodyah··on YouTube bans Steve Bannon's podcast channel
I'm surprised it wasn't banned already, tbh.
yenwodyah··on Flash Player is about to stop working on Windows 10
Along with Ruffle, there's also Flashpoint, a project to curate an archive of every flash game and animation on the internet. (https://bluemaxima.org/flashpoint/)
yenwodyah··on Amazon disallows pointing out paid reviews
I got the same kind of card ordering a laptop charger earlier this year. Tried to report it to Amazon. Got back a canned response telling me to report individual reviews. Amazon doesn't care.
yenwodyah··on YouTube to remove content that alleges widespread election fraud
It's heartening to see Google finally taking steps towards curbing the spread of disinformation on their platforms recently. Now if only Facebook would do the same.
yenwodyah··on Why a land-value tax is inevitable
Most societies already levy property taxes on real estate, including on unimproved land. I don't know how they assess the value of that land, but they must have a working method for it.
yenwodyah··on 1% of farms operate 70% of world's farmland
There's nothing wrong with that.
yenwodyah··on Using GANs to Create Fantastical Creatures
"Using GANs to create textures for already drawn fantastical creatures" would be a more accurate title. It's impressive, but not nearly as impressive as the title would suggest.
yenwodyah··on Amazon Review Scam
Hey, I got one of those too. Tried to report it, but Amazon won't even accept reports about sellers buying reviews. And then the product vanished from the store after a week or so.
yenwodyah··on A Spectre Is Haunting Unicode (2018)
There's a popular belief in Japan that a person's blood type influences their personality[0]. This probably made Japanese emoji designers add them to their pre-unicode emoji sets, which then got rolled into the first set of unicode emoji in 2010[1], along with a bunch of other Japanese symbols.

yenwodyah··on Suppression is a bigger scandal than the actual story
And at the same time, private companies cannot force you to use their services, or threaten you with violence or imprisonment if you refuse to follow their rules.
yenwodyah··on Facebook, Twitter block the NY Post from posting
So they used a misleading photo in the header of an article and, when called out for it, immediately replaced it and acknowledged their mistake? Come on now. I wish other news sources showed this level of journalistic integrity.
