ydnaclementine··on Tell HN: I just made a first ever dollar on my SaaS
Living the dream, congrats
ydnaclementine··on I so hate the phrase "vibe coding"
I like it because it makes people seethe
ydnaclementine··on Education Secretary Wants 'A1' in Classrooms
Al Pacino coming to a classroom near you
ydnaclementine··on PEP 750 – Template Strings
can't wait to have my linter tell me I should be using t-strings instead of f-strings. apologies for not being patient enough to read through this to find it, but I hope they can remove f-strings:

> There should be one-- and preferably only one --obvious way to do it.

ydnaclementine··on Reintroducing Capsul
every hackerspace should have a shared server like this. my college had an opensource club, and they had something like this for members to use/toy with. one of my biggest regrets is not going to those meetings more
ydnaclementine··on Anime fans stumbled upon a mathematical proof
you mean unbelievably based
ydnaclementine··on Tailscale is pretty useful
> it’s no longer possible thanks to a cursed thing called CGNAT

as someone who does publicly expose services that have auth, why does CGNAT make exposing ports publicly bad?

ydnaclementine··on AWS S3 SDK breaks its compatible services
I guess you could say the s3 compatible services are no longer s3 compatible. But don't update your client and give them a sec to update
ydnaclementine··on Physical attractiveness outweighs intelligence in partner selection
we could make it a show called Love is Blind, possibly hosted by Nick Lachey
ydnaclementine··on Learning fast and accurate absolute pitch judgment in adulthood
Is this type of training more beneficial to do first rather than recognizing intervals?
ydnaclementine··on Musk-led group makes $97B bid for control of OpenAI
good thing even parts of this would never really happen haha
ydnaclementine··on Deploying Rails on Docker: Kamal Alternative
Exactly. But I'd love to hear what the next step after dokku is. But maybe it's just moving the db to another, separate vps, and spinning up more instances of the service all pointing at that db instance, with all of that using dokku.
ydnaclementine··on Stay Gold, America
"Don't replace the culture war with the class war"
ydnaclementine··on I am rich and have no idea what to do
she's not wrong though. it's exactly like one the comments says: "It's the intellectual equivalent of the wannabe tough guy staple: "I almost joined the military.""
ydnaclementine··on Why making friends as an adult is harder
Just suggesting because I don't see it here: foreign language group classes. I would say groups are pretty good for beginner level. But you are trading a bit of learning efficiency for the social aspect, arguably
ydnaclementine··on The Smallest Thing in Go
Not sure where I read it, but I think it's useful to have your 0th iota value be a not valid value, or as your empty/zero value for the enum. Maybe in the planet example you have "Space" or "Nothingness" as your 0 value
ydnaclementine··on China's Salt Typhoon recorded top American officials' calls, says White House
When does known espionage and hacking of nation's telecoms become an act of war?
ydnaclementine··on Ask HN: What's the one feature you'd want in a GitHub productivity tool?
I wish the Notifications page had better design and functionality. Let me filter stuff for a specific org (ex: work related only), don't shorten the list
ydnaclementine··on Ding Liren Beats Gukesh Dommaraju in World Chess Championship 2024 Game 1
Everyone has their own favorite chess youtuber that will review these games. I prefer GM Ben Finegold's analysis (and humor): https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dLJqm2XAB0s
ydnaclementine··on Ask HN: Life-changing purchases since 2020? (Under $100 and under $1000)
I've started recently, for an adult absolute beginner I would recommend: Alfred's Basic Adult All-In-One Piano Course (covers all types of music). A popular alternative is the Faber Adult Piano Adventures (more classical). Both books will go over how to position your wrists and fingers, music theory, as well as pieces.

I'm sure Alfred and Faber have books for kids. Check reddit and amazon. But you won't go wrong with books from either probably.

To accompany the books, there are videos where people go over the pieces from the books as a piano teacher. I recommend this guy: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=e4gizue_ULg&list=PL8hZtgRyL9..., but just search the book name + piece name

Lastly since you're both learning, look into duet books and utilize the split mode on your piano

ydnaclementine··on Wasp Flamethrower Drone Attachment
guys will see this and just think "hell yeah"
ydnaclementine··on Future Music magazine is closing after 32 years
Any magazines worth subscribing to still, tech focused or not? I literally only get spam and christmas card from mom in my mailbox.
ydnaclementine··on TwoSet Violin 'ends chapter' after eleven years
In the Mozart biography that I'm reading, it talks about how the opera during his time was much more social: people openly chatted, played cards, and were busy catching eyes during the show. It was a seen or be seen type of social affair, or something to do to pass the time. It was the job of the composer to draw attention from that other stuff to the show and singers.

All this puffed up pomposity around opera or classical we currently deal with is much different than in the "hey-days".

ydnaclementine··on John Carmack on inlined code (2014)
> do always, then inhibit or ignore strategy

can anyone expound on this? I'm not sure what he's exactly referring to here

ydnaclementine··on $61 kit turns any Hot Wheels into a remote-controlled drift car
RC stuff is so cool. If I was still a kid in the burbs I'd be flying drones in circles outside my house.
ydnaclementine··on As Florida Storms Worsen, Some in Tampa Bay Wonder: Is Living There Worth It?
Is rebuilding houses every 30-50 years eco friendly?
ydnaclementine··on Disabling Scheduled Dependency Updates
This guy calls it out here, but I will say that the notifications page on github could do with a redesign. If you're in a busy org for your job, it's not easy to see everything in the org (they limit showing number of notifications per repo), and the volume of notifications from your job org will cover up anything in your personal/following repos.

Sure you could unfollow work repos you aren't interested in, but you're automatically following any new ones.

ydnaclementine··on A Brief History of QuickTime
I don't use it anymore, but I'm glad VLC got popular and supported everything out of the box. I remember needing to download quicktime and realplayer just to play specific codecs
ydnaclementine··on Craig Wright said he invented Bitcoin – lawyers proved him wrong
Would be trivial to prove but he can't. Like saying you own a particular house but you don't have the key to the front door.
