ycombonator··on Apple is lobbying against a bill aimed at stopping forced labor in China
of course it is. how else are they going to increase their margins. Apple TV is a multi billion dollar dumpster fire that keeps losing money. as long as they find suckers to manipulate they will keep lobbying. https://www.apple.com/supplier-responsibility/

ycombonator··on The Vale Programming Language
Valid question. if you started programming dynamic languages like Python you don’t have to worry about memory control.

ycombonator··on Don't use third party auth to sign in
This applies to all “as a service” products. Unless you can’t provision a server and stand up open source services on your own there is no reason to use 3rd party services.
ycombonator··on DoorDash S-1
That probably means they are cooking the books for the pre IPO investors and don't want to go jail after public listing.

ycombonator··on Submarine Cable Map
It would nice if there was terrestrial fiber map which shows fiber lines in cities and towns. Also is there is a map available that shows where active fiber connections are available by address. FIOS doesn’t have a coverage map.

Amazing. My 5 year old was raising caterpillars that have woven cocoons. The fabric seems similar.

The same could be asked of the 72M Americans. Just because you say “what’s wrong with them” doesn’t make you right.

ycombonator··on US govt ups minimum H-1B tech salaries to $208,000 a year
Adding additional context from the article. It primarily impacts Indian outsourcing companies registered as US companies such as Infosys, Cognizant, TCS, HCL, Tech Mahindra, Wipro etc. These companies have been gaming the system and making billions by underpaying their imported staff.

> An analysis [PDF] of the new rules by non-partisan National Foundation for American Policy noted that the H-1B wage minimums will require foreigners to be paid much more than American citizens on market rates. That's not a problem for the likes of Facebook and Apple, though it will be disastrous for organizations like Infosys, that import immigrant workers, as well as small and medium-sized businesses.

ycombonator··on US govt ups minimum H-1B tech salaries to $208,000 a year
Basically the administration turned the tables on Big Tech. They primarily import H1Bs to dilute the employment pool to let the market take care of wage depression. There is plenty of tech talent pipeline inside the country. Just look at the eager undergrads looking for employment and other US citizens looking to step into tech field via boot camps. Increasing the threshold for the wages to paid for “specialty occupation for which several attempts have been made to hire US Citizens” aka H1B makes the test true to the spirit of the law.
ycombonator··on Microservices – architecture nihilism in minimalism's clothes
I couldn’t have put this a better way. I was on the receiving end of the microservices chaos.
ycombonator··on Google users locked out after 15 years' use
Move to paid accounts like iCloud email or fastmail, protonmail for critical use cases. iCloud email is free for all ios users and fastmail and protonmail cost pennies per day. Primary email has become something akin to having a phone number these days. Lots of consumer services use email for authorization.
ycombonator··on Toronto-area lawyer had to flee Canada after taking on the tow truck industry
I was going to say, it’s hard to sell wet concrete on a short window. Min back order window for concrete is 24 hours and the construction crew plans the pours ahead so they are not waiting around for black market concrete. It actually costs a lot more to idle the crew than the price difference of black market
ycombonator··on Toronto-area lawyer had to flee Canada after taking on the tow truck industry
Sounds like Boston. The roads are torn up on a perpetual basis and made worse. These are what I call “brother in law contracts”
ycombonator··on Ask HN: Google Photos users: What will you do if your Google account is banned?
Just my personal opinion. Don’t use Google Services for “critical” use cases like storing personal photos. If they have the ability to ban/ shutdown your Google Account without recourse, I wouldn’t be using their services for anything other than searches, junk mail account for newsletters. There are plenty of companies out there with very reliable products that serve customers with respect for a tiny fee.
ycombonator··on Silicon Valley is spending millions more for Joe Biden than it did for Clinton
Despair. They want cheap foreign labor to suppress the tech wages and DJT stands in the way.

ycombonator··on 'Who the hell elected you?' U.S. Senate tech hearing becomes political tussle
Well its simple. There is overwhelming evidence they didnt play fair. They are not supposed to editorialize tweets (violation of sec 230 protection). They were free to let Nytimes publish supposed hacked tax returns yet blocked/ censored Nypost and other twitter users from sharing URLs in the same context. They got caught. Now its up to the congress on how they want to proceed to strip them of sec 230 protection and let the trial lawyers sue them into oblivion.

ycombonator··on Show HN: Which DNS servers are you pointing to?
Thank you. What an awesome explanation. This has been incredibly helpful. Perhaps one of the web optimizations that site owners need to think about is use in-bailiwick delegations
