yc-kraln··on Daylight Computer – New 60fps e-paper tablet
This would be killer for musicians!
yc-kraln··on Apple announces new accessibility features, including eye tracking
Toyota's hybrids are the worst. I never get motion sick except as a passenger in any Toyota hybrid
yc-kraln··on Tell HN: Ever think of applying to YC? Do it this weekend for S24
Note that I get 422 responses from the server when I attempt to submit the form.
yc-kraln··on A curious phenomenon called 'Etak'
Working on this. It is harder than it sounds, but not impossible.
yc-kraln··on BootLogo: Logo language in 508 bytes of x86 machine code
The other day when I was hacking together on some GCode for a small CNC table, it felt somehow very similar to me: I realized that, as a five or six year old, playing with Logo/Turtle graphics on Apple ][ machines--my first interactions with computers--was essentially the same conceptual loop.
yc-kraln··on New Ultra Fast Lossless Audio Codec (HALAC)
until you release the source, it will never be used by someone, so I guess you are stuck in a loop and it will enver be opened.
yc-kraln··on The Year of Ozempic
Rybelsus. It's a daily pill. It already exists and works fine
yc-kraln··on Firefox Keeps Getting Faster
The only thing that keeps getting faster is the abandonment of Firefox. It doesn't matter how fast Firefox is, or how private it is, or any of the other garbage the Mozilla foundation has been wasting their time on. If Firefox continues to slip in usage, and eventually into obscurity, it is all for nothing.

A technically superior, or safer, or more private, or whatever the current line of argumentation and marketing is, does not matter. Mozilla VPN does not matter.

yc-kraln··on Strong static typing, a hill I'm willing to die on
The example from the article without any explicit arguments reminds me very much of objective c's message passing concept, which I actually quite liked and used very much. So, I guess the answer is: there is no objectively correct way to do things, except if the thing you are trying to do is get "engagement" then take an extremely strong stance on something which has no objectively correct answer.
yc-kraln··on Ask HN: Why did Visual Basic die?
I was with you until "... so is writing a React frontend".

No. No it's not. Making a functional UI in visual basic is childs play compared to the absolute cesspit of NIH and feature treadmill that frontend web development has become.

You are gatekeeping with strawmen.

yc-kraln··on Chrome was delivered without any sprints at all (2021)
Hey, so, I have managed a ton of software projects. I strongly oppose Agile, "agile" and nearly every variation thereof (SAFe is the worst). Not every software project is a website contracted to an agency for the lowest possible cost, and any software of any consequence has a lifetime of decades, not minutes, so "working code over documentation" is a fundamentally flawed basis, before getting into any of the other bullshit cargo-culting nonsense that flows from the agile methodology.
yc-kraln··on Making AMD GPUs competitive for LLM inference
It wasn't clear to me from the blog post: If I have an AMD GPU and an AMD CPU and everything with unified memory, can I use system memory for inferencing? that's a difference of "just" 16gb, or a combined 72gb available for me, and would br a big deal.
yc-kraln··on Bram Moolenaar has died
oh what! oh no :(

he finally figured out how to quit

yc-kraln··on What character was removed from the alphabet? (2020)
The further down you got, the more like German it sounded as I was mentally pronouncing it--but it was somehow a smooth gradient. Weird!
yc-kraln··on Starlink v2 reached the brightness reduction target recommended by astronomers
This is called "moving the goalposts", not whataboutism.

Whataboutism would be "Yeah, well, who cares what Starlink does, NASA launches rockets all the time and no one complains about their emissions"

yc-kraln··on European Union votes to bring back replaceable phone batteries
The firmware source needs to be put into escrow for any device with more than N sales; where N is 10k or 50k or 100k.
yc-kraln··on Reddit subs with millions of followers plan to extend the blackout indefinitely
I get here by typing hc (I prefer the compact hckrnews layout)
yc-kraln··on VW to fire top executives at software unit Cariad, source says
This, but SAFe
yc-kraln··on CATL has announced a new “condensed” battery with 500 Wh/kg
500 Wh/kg means Sulphur cathode, which also explains the solid electrolyte. Roughly speaking, it'll be 3x as energy dense but only a 1/2 as volumetrically efficient (so, a given capacity battery will weigh 1/3 less but take up twice as much space).

There are other approaches to Li-S (and Al-S and Mn-S) which will be less expensive. Grats to CATL for bringing this to market, but the race for sure isn't over yet.

yc-kraln··on What are the most common tinnitus frequencies? (2015)
Really sorry to hear that.

When I worked for Daimler, I was surprised to learn that all of their cars ship with something called "PRE-SAFE Sound" which, when it detects that you might be in a crash (i.e. at the point when the seatbelts are pre-tensioned), it plays a loud-ish burst of white noise through all the speakers, triggering your ears' automatic response which disconnects your ear drums. This means that when the actual (very loud!) crash happens, your hearing is saved. They developed this in the 90s when, after the advent of airbags, they saw that most injuries from moderate car crashes were hearing related. (Here's a video with some cool detail: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vTmLYY-Z2rc)

I always thought it was a huge shame that 1) this technology isn't required/mandated for all cars and 2) Mercedes doesn't advertise this more

yc-kraln··on Testing GPT 4's code-writing capabilities with some real world problems
This is already how automotive companies work. They are huge organizations which do four things: marketing, financing, design, and requirements. The supplier management and project management all fall under requirements management and enforcement.
yc-kraln··on Something Pretty Right: The History and Legacy of Visual Basic
I started programming with VB4, and built a lot of cool stuff in VB6. Went on to learn C++, C, Python, and a bunch of other cool languages to build a bunch of cool things.

Nothing really quite feels as approachable for a beginner as VB did, those days.

yc-kraln··on Running LLaMA 7B on a 64GB M2 MacBook Pro with Llama.cpp
any chance to get this to run on Radeon hardware? starting to feel a bit miffed
yc-kraln··on I almost bought a scanner
So, it's probably not the phyiscal port, but the controller and/or the interfacing. If you read the article fully, it mentions that the only known way to really fix the issue is to completely replace the main board... which would tell me that the "firewire port breaks" is a red-herring and something deeper in the electronics fails over time.
yc-kraln··on Apple to allow outside app stores in overhaul spurred by EU laws
In related news, Kraln to consider buying an iPhone for the first time. Kudos where it's due.
yc-kraln··on My ADHD founder toolbox
I was diagnosed when I was six, and, like you, I dropped all meds at 17. Recently (as in, this year) through a combination of therapy and introspection, I realized that while indeed I was able to have a successful life, career, relationships without the medication, and that, yes, my coping mechanisms were satisfactory, I was

punching myself in the face for no reason

Last month I saw a psychiatrist and got a prescription for stimulant medication for the first time in 20 years. After a week I had to sit down and just cry: stuff which was difficult or stressful was just simple, and at the end of the day I have so much more energy to do things, to be present, to live my life. The medication is an aid, a crutch, sure, and I don't need it, but it makes my life better, easier, less stressful and less tiring.

Why are you punching yourself in the face for no reason?

yc-kraln··on Ask HN: Have you stopped reading most news?
I recently subscribed to the weekend edition of the SZ. Print news still seems to have some sort of quality filters applied to it, and the choice of what is covered (or not covered) leaves me informed without becoming enraged.
yc-kraln··on Intel Laptop Users Should Avoid Linux 5.19.12 to Avoid Damaging the Display
Surprised no one has mentioned the Therac-25 debacle: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Therac-25

This is a lesson we've learned many times over by now: Software limits alone are insufficient.

yc-kraln··on Co-Founding Considered Harmful
Indeed, and I am highlighting that the actionable take-away for someone considering founding a vc-backed startup solo is: don't. You're fighting uphill enough, no need to make it tougher.
yc-kraln··on Co-Founding Considered Harmful
100% agree. Looking at a bootstrapped business, or a kickstarter project, and extrapolating to the wider world of founding a company (in particular, VC-backed companies) is a recipe for unneccesary pain.
